I beg your pardon? If I upgrade my Windows 10 OS, I no longer have access to the old version. That version has been replaced by the new upgraded version. So, sorry, but upgrade does[/] equal replacement.Upgrade =! replacement.
The detail scanner does not replace the general scanner. As with the old method, it adds functionality to the FSS. You are comparing apples and oranges. I was speaking about there being 2 scanners of the same type. You want the FSS and the ADS? They both do the same thing. The FSS is a mandatory upgrade to the ADS. Try running 2 versions of an OS side by side without a boot loader. You won't like the results. Basically to make it realistic, you'd have to choose which scanner to use for your session: the standard ADS or the FSS. You want to change, you'd have to logout and then log back in to the system using the other configuration if you wanted to change. That's why I say over engineering isn't good. And doing this, making a boot loader for each session login, strikes me as over engineering. The detailed surface scanner is optional ...

This has been explained multiple times already... what is being talked about is not strictly speaking the ADS as-was but an optional spiritual replacement for it in the form of an upgrade that merely populates the topological map for the player so they can use the near body scanning/discovery method if they so choose (just because the map is populated by the honk does not mean discovery rights are granted to the player - a near body or FSS scan would be required for that). The detail scanner does not replace the general scanner. Oh, for pity's sake, FDev; just give them their damn honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump exploration back.
Maybe we can have ship spinning, too.

Yeah, then maybe Traveller Explorers can actually get somewhere to explore... againOh, for pity's sake, FDev; just give them their damn honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump exploration back.

They still can.***

They already did. Since the introduction of the FSS and the removal of the ADS that's the exploration that is left to me. The FSS discourages me from investigating systems. Because I sure as heck aren't going to play the FSS minigame every system.Oh, for pity's sake, FDev; just give them their damn honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump-honk-jump exploration back.
Yes, they can max, it just takes a lot longer than it did because of the sheer boredom of constantly coming to a stop to honk is a silly mini game, reselecting 'Combat mode' so I can steer my ship and pressing accelerate again, so much so that I for one have to keep taking a brake from the monotony. They still can.
This is what really frustrates me, I don't see the difference between what the op is describing and using this instead;-

I can bore you for hours with holiday pictures though. If the game allowed interplayer trades I'd ask if I can have your stuff.
Many, many, holiday pictures. But on the other hand I also know how long you've been around here, Ziggy.
Specifically, without panning around, you can't tell whether the body is orbiting the main star or another body, and what order the bodies are in the orbital plane.
You can get it easy enough when you start doing the stupid panning game, but that completely defeats the purpose of the spectrum as a decision making utility...
Unless all you care about is the credit rewards and are cherry picking.
Happy to be wrong and eagerly hoping for instruction on how get that information from the specrtrum.
