Is ED played by mostly "Old Ducks" like me?

That's a very good question! I thought myself as old (40s) due to the majority of players I interact with on my platform, but then I came to this forum and slowly realized that I'm probably "young" by comparison.

Well, I felt old when I got 30. Then, 40. Then, 50 recently. Forgive me, but all I can see here is a Young Duckling. With a Butt problem maybe, but wouldn't that even be more indicative of teen age?

Todays, I enjoy the privilege of sharing war stories with other vets from Cold War times. Beat the ZX 81. Elite I was some years later.

Inigo Montoya forever.

Someone posted the following in another thread of mine (abbreviated):

This, along with various other threads and photos from the meet-ups make me wonder if we are all "Old Ducks" playing this game. Ironically I'm actually relatively young compared to many in this forum. My "Old Duck" PSN name was in relation to the average demographic on the Playstation - so when I'm playing Overwatch or Fortnite, the "Old Duck" is very fitting (and earns me some good laughs), whereas I'm beginning to think that I'm a "Young Rooster" when it comes to Elite Dangerous.

I do find the "ED on PS4 is better than Elite on Commodore 64, so what's all the fuss about bugs and graphics?" mentality to be a bit frustrating. If ED is played mostly by a bunch of old guys happy it's better than the C64, then it probably will never rise to the expectations of this "Young Rooster". After all, the original Elite had flickering graphics, so why complain about the terrible flickering shadows on PS4?

And if you are young, young enough not to have played the original Elite games, I'm curious - what draws you to Elite Dangerous? This is a sincere question, as I think many of us older folk (I am old enough to have played Elite on C64 as a kid) play at least partially out of nostalgia.
My pull was the frustration I felt playing the original when I was young and a sense of nostalgia. I'm 44 and when I was in school with the BBC micro and later the archimedes I loved the game but found it very difficult and complicated but I don't think I was ever in the right mind back then for elite. Fast forward a couple of decades and I'm getting bored of doom and far cry on pc so I look to see what's available from my childhood. Pyramid warp on the msx emulator yay I still can't complete it. Turrican 2 on the amiga emulator. Still can't complete it. Mmmm j remember a space game what was it called... Elite: mm I do wonder if they have made anything. 2018 I discovered Elite Dangerous. Omg I couldn't Believe my very eyes. It was everything I dreamed of as a child. I don't care if I can't play it or I'm not going to become elite. It didn't matter all that mattered is I'm now running my own spaceship in glorious 60fps. I love visiting stations. Filling my cargo hold with gold and running and avoiding interdictions and making a profit. Recently I've joined this forum and discovered so much to the game and thoroughly enjoy every minute.

I’m in the 50’s range, bought Elite (tape version) for my BBC back in ‘84, and scraped together enough free cash to get an Amiga to play Frontier on when it arrived. I adored them both for different reasons, and am pleased I was able to get the opportunity to play them as they emerged.

But do I think that because block colour or wire-frame graphics and gameplay are not as visually exciting as what we have with ED so there is nothing to aspire to or perhaps gripe about? No, absolutely not - the previous games pushed the hardware to the limits, and stretched what was even thought possible with graphics at the time; and this is the heritage that I believe ED should aspire to :)

You and I think alike! There are plenty of games that push the PS4 with amazing graphics and technical gameplay. Unfortunately ED isn't one of them. Don't get me wrong, ED does some amazing things that are cutting-edge IMO (mostly involving the Stellar Forge), but it falls far short (visually) of many of the other games I play on PS4.

I thought myself as old (40s) due to the majority of players I interact with on my platform, but then I came to this forum and slowly realized that I'm probably "young" by comparison. If I were a PC gamer still, I probably never would have used "Old Duck" as a name, since I kinda expect PC gamers to be old (sorry), whereas console gamers are often the younger millennials and Gen-Z, at least that's been my experience.

So I guess from my frame-of-reference, "old" is 50+ and young is 30s and below... Anyone in their 40s is "just right", unless they use C64 to say that EBL is acceptable :p

Just right is if you played the original when it came out and you were in your late 20s so mid 60s now, old is mid 70s and up young is 50s below that is all "kids today" territory.

Well worrying about skin troubles is often a teenage thing.

I am 'young' (31) so I never played the original games. What draws me to Elite Dangerous? Mostly that almost all other modern games suck, just like modern movies. They all try to do the same thing, while Elite often tries things differently (not always better, sometimes worse, but still more interesting).

Some of my most favourite games:
Jagged Alliance 2
Gothic 1+2
Medieval 2
Mount & Blade
The Witcher 1
Deus Ex 1
Max Payne 1
Need For Speed Porsche
TES Morrowind
Mass Effect 1
Star Wars Kotor 1+2
Neverwinter Nights 1

Some of these games have a sequel that I didn't mention, that's because they suck. Technically The Witcher 3 or Skyrim are better than their predecessors, but they aren't as revolutionary. It's just the same game with better graphics, sometimes it's even the same story just with changed names...

Just like the games in the list above, FDEV has a vision and ambition for Elite. I don't know if they will ever get there. But I prefer an unfulfilled vision over no vision or ambition at all (CoD, BF, AC, etc.).
