Create Useless Fiction email subscription list

We've just started receiving GalNet emails via the Elite Dangerous Newsletter subscription. Can we create a GalNet Bulletins subscription list so I can remove myself from it and thus still get the actual Newletters which tell us about the game's construction?

I'm on the Newletter subscription to get reality on progress, not some random fiction which is just pfaffing about. If I want made-up rubbish I'll go watch some politicians on TV.

Thanks.

Yeah I don't want galnet stuff either. If its in the game I hope there is a way to turn it off.

Whilst some people like Galnet that's fine - but don't bash those that don't. I too do not want made up stuff to read It adds nothing to the game for me personally. But as I said an option to turn it off (in game aswell) would be good. The game is big enough to have or not to have Galnet.

As far as I'm aware the fiction stuff has been text only. Separating the types of newsletter would be more benefit to the people who are only interested in the fiction, but I think that would be a very small minority.

I have to ask you how far do you strip away the artifice? When you're playing the game do you accept the conceit that you're in a spaceship shooting at other ships? Or do you just see yourself as sitting in a chair using a joystick to get the pixels on your monitor to blink the correct way?

Simple solution. Set up a spam filter.

If we remove all the made up elements of Elite, back to ye olde desktop adventures we go! *rolls a diplomacy failure*

Yeah, to be fair, not everyone wants all the fictional guff - they just want a game. They don't want to become that embroiled in the whole story and fictional side of things. So each to their own, I say.

Except that news like these can be used to signal events initiated by the background simulation. And the background simulation is one of the major backbones to the game. Without events, the universe will be as static as an Earth globe, showing Africa with all those incorrect names from the past!

I really can't believe what I'm reading here.

People are upset about this? You don't want 'fictional content' from a fictional game you're playing?

Good grief. Don't read it.

Even the most generic shooter has some kind of storyline and setting, some fiction that provides a context for the gameplay. Are people now saying that said context is worthless? They should go and play checkers! Now there's a game without context or story. Or how about Tetris?

That's not fair! Its not effecting your gameplay if people wish not to know about elite lore so why are you knocking such people!

Live and let live! People play the way they want - if it is a truly living open universe some people will choose to ignore the stuff on galnet as there are those in real life who don't watch the news/ keep up with current events.

Context isn't worthless - just has no meaning and doesn't add to the game for some people - which is fine cos it aint hurting anyone else!

Fair enough, some people don't read the news. However, calling such stuff meaningless or useless is essentially dismissive of those who prefer role-playing to rule-playing.

On some level, having people online that does not know about major events, could affect the balance of what the total population is engaging in. And as such, it is not without consequences to be blind to what is going on. One less shipment of weapons to the rebels, could be their ultimate doom. Remember, we are not passive viewers in this one. We are the movers and shakers of the universe. ;)

Email rules: divert to named folder

The tone of the OP is definitely off, but I do get the idea. I'd also prefer to read these sorts of in-game news actually within the game and not have the game break its own boundaries and invade my "civilian life". ;)

There's a way of diverting your incoming emails into folders. Depending on your service provider. Heres typical links for email rules.

That way they wont invade your civilian life. Just open them when your on the forum etc.

Personnally I like the idea of news updates. Its early days but I'd like to see the option when docked to get the galaxy newsfeeds, lastest prices, audio/radio feeds whats happening in the ED universe etc.

Welcome to the forums!

You might want to talk a little more respectfull about it. It is definatly not rubbish and is part of the Elite galaxy. If you dont enjoy it then i wonder if the game is for you.

Stop bullying him - what exactly does concern over email spam have to do with liking Elite?... are you an idiot?

First time I've read this thread since the original post, nine months ago.

A lot of people missed the point... I didn't want that stuff in my mbox... slather it around the game all you like but don't send it to my account all the time without providing a filter mechanism such as unsubscribing to a list. At the time it was either no newsletters or suffer through galnet waffle.
