Steam Numbers Now

Only marketing I see for GTA5 these days on PS4 is insane sales. I was tempted by it because it was so cheap awhile back, but I just don't like the GTA ethos.

I was thinking of GTA5 as an "old" game, probably because it is on my platform compared to ED, but I see it's close to the same age as ED. I would suspect, like ED, many players eventually get bored and move on to something else after they've "done it all". That's why the high numbers surprise me. In some ways ED feels like it offers more for long-term players, thanks to the BGS and a galaxy that will never be fully explored in our lifetime.

I'm still waiting for Rockstar to make a Firefly game, as a console exclusive of course 🤠
GTA 5 started with a peak of 360.000 players and 'dropped' to 55.000 average players today. If you apply the same rules of 'Elite is dying' threads to GTA 5 the game is pretty much dead... :D

A Firefly Rockstar game would be nice, but I'd already be happy with RDR2 on the PC master race platform ;)

PS
I just realised how funny it is: In terms of player retention, Elite performs better than GTA 5. One of the most successful games in the history of video games.

And the little game I wrote myself in Python has 100% retention, so I'm better than the lot of them!

I dont think there is anything wrong with giving credit where credit is due, even if you are personally unhappy with something. ED outperforms X4, X:R, Rebel Galaxy, NMS (and according to the limited available metrics) SC both in absolute player numbers and player retention. For what it is worth, the only VR competitor, X:R VR edition, has five concurrent players. At times I have more ED VR players in my own friend list.

Your implicit notion that player retention is pointless as a metric when it is a tiny/minor/insignificant product seems... flawed.

Personally, I spend maybe 10 minutes per day browsing this forum while I have breakfast. Haven't played in over 5 months. I do not "whinge", I state my opinion about the game because it is such a massive failed opportunity. Then I go on living my life and playing other games. But I still think someone needs to occasionally give a reality check to the "Elite is the best videogame ever!!1!!" people.

It's not. And if you're right that "people play this game for years and end up hating it more and more as time goes on"... well there's something wrong there isn't it? Most great games I play for a long time I eventually get bored of (it's normal) and leave them aside with great memories of them.
So why the resentment towards this game? I have been playing it for a while now and it seems to be like all the great games I have played: I'm addicted and will remain so for a while (tends to be a few months, maybe a year if the game's really good). Then I will get bored and move on. What is it about this game that people just can't move on? It sorta seems like a failed relationship where 1 partner can't move on, they become bitter and obsessive, (and of course some exes turn into stalkers!). Like I said before it's just not emotionally healthy. When you get bored with the game you really need to move on. There's more to life than this bloody game! 😉

Speaking of obsessive, you seem kinda obsessed by other people's criticisms of the game. It almost feels like you're using a sneaky ad hominem to validate your opinion of the game over those who have a different opinion. This is a forum, not a fan site, where multiple views and opinions can be expressed. I've not seen any posts in this thread that qualify as being "emotionally unhealthy", so there's no need for anyone to play Dr. Phil here.

Tho I have been playing it way too much! Have not been to the gym for 3 weeks and it's all ED's fault!

I happen to like Dr Phil!

I bought many games that I gave up on for one reason or another and just walked away from, never looking back.
Heck, there's a box in my attic where those games now call home.
But this game, I can't seem to let go. Can't stop hoping it gets better than it is.
Maybe that's a good thing and a credit to FD.

You gotta admit that people who don't like the game anymore and thus don't play it anymore then log on to the forum to complain about the game they don't like and don't play is a bit strange.... 🤔

ED is an abusive ex-girlfriend that we just can't get over. We keep hoping she'll change and we can get back together with her, but all she does is chase after hot young guys, leaving us bitter and angry.

Not strange at all.

There are a small group of people who seem to post very intentionally to troll those who love the game. I've not seen them in this thread (though perhaps I've missed some posts). There are others who love the premise of the game but want it to be something more or something different. And then there are those of us who actually love the game itself, but the game we love has become bogged down with bugs and poorly-implemented updates.

For me personally, if the bugs are fixed and some of the new features are polished (FSS, HUD modes, etc), I would happily start playing the game again. That's why I frequent the forums and why I still keep my copy of ED installed on an external drive. That said, I've resigned myself to the likelihood that I'll have to wait until New Era and / or ED for PS5 before it's once again fully enjoyable to me. In the meantime I'll continue follow the "story" and ethos of the game through the posts and videos of other players. But that doesn't mean I won't complain about complainable things. Even some of the game's biggest fans have serious and vocal complaints.

I've saved, and straightened out at least two women who dumped me for hotter/richer guys. Actually saved one's life. Several others had their children's first bank accounts started by me, plus other assistance.

I can't say Elite is much better. "The Beautiful Lady With No Mercy" is all too true for this game.

In this story, she isn't abusive the abusive one. She just stopped liking you and moved on to something better. Sounds healthy and normal. The abusive part is hanging around and obsessively craptalking the ex-girlfriend. :p

I think it will run very well on the PS5. The base game runs as smooth as a seal on the 1X and the PS5 should be a step up from the 1X. I do have a slight worry that when I buy Horizons that my game's gonna get all buggy too. Wondering if the reason I am having zero problems is because I don't have Horizons? I will find out soon enough because I think I'm nearly ready to do some engineering. Be interesting to see what happens.

Horizons is pretty much essential, especially since the game throws money at you now which destroys the pleasant sense of progression you used to get from one ship to the next.
