The Frontier Forums Sub Sim Thread

Anyone else a massive submarine simulator nerd?

Absolutely. I played a ton of Silent Hunter serie games with SH3 being my all time favorite.
Also I still have my original disk with Sub Command and 688 Hunter Killer.
Currently playing Cold Waters and CMANO that also has decent sub warfare simulated.

BTW, does anybody has some tips how to run Steam SH3 version properly on Wind 10? Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm fairly sure it is, I remember seeing an email doing the rounds about a year ago regarding it.

We should try to get some MP Sub or skimmer co-op gaming up and running here, even if it is an offline flotilla thing :D

It is indeed...most of the subsim.com modding gurus are involved too. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

The widescreen mod is a must, but pop into subsim.com and look under the SH3 mod section...it's all in there including hints and tips on how to get it up and running.

So far two good patrols in my WW2 play through with Sh3 and GWX/SH Commander.

After a near miss near Heligoland (forgot about the allied minelaying endeavour) I transferred from my Type II to a VIIB patrol in another flotilla.

Since then in two trips I've sunk an illustrious class CV and a Nelson class BB.

Not bad work and it's still only mid 1940.

I've tried out Wolfpack now. Got around with some diveplane action and general controls in solo lobby and dropped into a MP lobby tonight. Game glitched out once with the crew falling outa sub into sky. Must have been the battery acid we figured. Twas colourful tho. We did another run without any glitches, made contact and lost the boat vs armed merchant while deck gunning.

So far only command section, conning tower and bridge is modelled. So no torpedo reloading action. What you get right now is a more or less sound groundwork for Multicrew U-Boat. Procedures require some degree of teamwork, a somewhat savy navigator is recommended and get your terminology right. With 5 peeps per boat I think is OK enough to do for everyone and overall is not too complicated except for getting the whole ralistic torpedo shooting right.

A lobby can hold 3 (or 4?) boats, but when the host leaves the other boats are screwed by disconnect. That need to be changed.

I'm ready to play when I get back. Brushing up on my TMA, as it's been years since I did it properly.

Wonder if subsim.com will be running an E-flotilla again like in the glory days of silent Hunter 3.

Well my form has returned with regards to TMA for Sh3. Im now back to a point where I'm comfortably hitting 5-8knt merchant shops with every eel.

Looking forward to getting home and giving Wolfpack a try.

I have to say, I do like proper multicrew mechanic games.

So I finally got round to Wolfpack

The good:
U-boat Interior is beautifully modelled.
All the positions are easy to use and mechanics understandable at a basic level.
Generally 'gets' the feel.

The Bad:
At the moment, convoy and escort AI feels a little simplistic. In a late war scenario, our 2 boat Wolfpack tore apart the enemy convoy with no concerns beyond running out of ammo. Speaking of which....
Unlimited deck gun ammo. This really isn't right to me.

The Ugly
NPC models could do with a touch up.
Intermittent environment graphic glitches.

OMG. Not your conventional sub sim (like, at all) but... I didn't know it but I totally want this:

Offical game page: https://barotraumagame.com/

And a RPS preview: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/20...otrauma-plunges-into-early-access-next-month/

Basically a sci-fi sub game (exploring the depths of Europa) played as a single character moving through and outside of the sub and interacting with what looks like sh*tloads of systems, with up to 16 players "co-op" for maximum hilarity. Apparently, empty player slots are filled by a helpful AI so there's that for people who prefer to feel in control. Also, absolutely complete mod support to the point that they publish the game's source code on GitHub.

Fair enough, you win that one! I programmed a torpedo shooting game on a graphical TI-81, but not only was that much later (secondary school, like...), it was also just about visually estimating the angle, in degrees, between your sub and the randomly located ship. No DLC either, but in my defense I had included a cheat code: if you entered pi/7 as the angle, the game would automatically calculate the perfect angle for launch instead.
You fancy kids with your programming.

In my days we had to IMAGINE the submarines and used STICKS and PINECONES for our submarine simulators, if we were lucky we had a PUDDLE we could use.

Anyone play SH4 here?

Asking because it's one I have but not installed

Oddly its the only one I didn't play or own.

The Pacific Theatre is kind of boring IMO, particularly as the 'difficulty' you face rapidly decreases compared with being a German in the Atlantic.

It's the Pacific thing, right? I gave up on that with very mechanistic appearing air patrols. They ALWAYS spawned from the very same direction. I just couldn't take that anymore.

Regress on damage model and torpedo shooting, too.

I have horrid gaming flashbacks to '44 Sh3 games and being Sunderland'd to death in the Bay of Biscuits.

shudder

So bloody hard.

Ouch, Barotrauma released in EA but at a €25 price point. Those servers aren't going to fill themselves quick and it's going to be hard work to get friends to buy into it...
