Though, something is wrong here, because I don't love Dell, Oculus and Thrustmaster more, but spent more with them to play Elite than with Frontier Developments, ironically
Yes it is an added value.

What a bunch of old grumps ! For the price of one persons meal at a mediocre restaurant you got Hours of flying fun in a huge universe, the chance to zap aliens or players as you please, and the opportunity to share your thoughts with all the wonderful old grumps contributors on this very forum
Compared with, say a few DVD's or a couple of months Spotify, I'd say ED has been pretty good value for me. Could it have been better value if FDEV had done a few things differently - probably, but that's always true, isn't it.
I agree about the skins - either they are too muted or just in bad taste. They don't light my fire. I wonder if they are trying too hard to avoid giving players an advantage by using them.
In general I'd like to say thanks to the team at FDEV for the fruits of their labour, and to encourage then to improve by pointing out what they do well, and not expect what is a relatively small company to achieve the impossible with limited resources..

With 4 accounts now I really have no idea how much I have spent and just glad it was not all paid out at once! Apart from £200 in the Kickstarter for my main account plus the cost of the game plus Horizons for the other four (usually when it was on offer), it has mostly been the odd few pounds here and there for various paint jobs - some multiple times for the different accounts. I already had a HOTAS/rudder pedals for other flight sims, mostly Aces High, and the Oculus gets used for other games too. I do have accounts on XBox and PS4 too but buying anything from the store for those seems to be a complicated procedure.... at least on XBox, not really played enough on PS4 to know for sure. I love playing Elite and if buying paint jobs here and there helps towards developing the game, I'm all for it.

Erm dare not check the books! 4 Accounts 1xLEP pass, Paint jobs, bobbleheads, detailing ..... Oh not to mention two gaming rigs, two HOTAS rigs and a VR headset ! and the ONLY game we play (Me n the wife) is Elite!
I encouraged them, or thought I did, in August 2015 by buying an LEP instead of just Horizons. That extra money has yet to provide me with any entertainment at all (probably lots for others though), it has created significant frustration for me.
I'd like it back.
Round about 60. I think. Most of it for Horizon and base game.

The ship skins done by that famous commander Qohen Leth purely as a fan project absolutely knock FDev's bland, uniform, unimaginative, generic, drab, repetitive, etc, etc ship skin offerings into the proverbial cocked hat... I've bought a couple at the beginning but not recently............. purely down to their absolute lack of artistic merit!
P.S. I've got the base EDH game with x2 commander accounts, (LEP), Boxed Edition game, couple of paint jobs and bobbleheads, Holo-Me bits, all the ED books both printed and 'E' Book, .... and £5000+ ED focused top gaming/monitors setup... haven't got a clue how much that little lot works out at...and I don't want to know (nor would the wife!)

I guess this depends on which country you live in (and how much you eat).
I'd have to really want to waste a lot of money to spend more on a single meal than what I have for my one account in the game so far. It'd be more than enough to feed anyone with high quality food for more than a week anywhere in the world, except for maybe Antarctica or something silly like that.
I know how to cook and grill though, so maybe that's somewhat of an exception.
