Ah, so now it becomes clear...

Well, looks like something interesting if I need a break from ED. A change of pace and a break from galaxy wide murder. Just need to dust off the PC.

I want velociraptor canons.

I mean ok, they wouldn’t be very effective, but you have to admit they’d be a talking point.
Found some!

Probably, but marketing can only cope with one at a time it seems.

That would depend on if there’s anything about the “New Era” that is marketable at this time. In most games, the game play and mechanics are developed first, and once those are firmly in place, then the graphics artists, sound designers, and UI designers get to work on all the bells and whistles.

If space legs is truly the “next era”, which do you think will generate the most hype?

Thisor this?

(Both videos are awesome, BTW. One’s just a lot prettier. ;)

It has been observed in the past that the frequency of updates for ED has declined whilst the new game releases have increased. I personally think the OP is correct, despite FDevs constant denials and reassurances in this area, the facts speak for themselves.

Only so much money to go around, though. Best give it to the new kid.
Are you saying they won't be paying the ED devs and only paying Planet Zoo Devs, even though we know they are reruiting for ED?

Maybe its voluntary work and they are not going to be paid. Maybe the FDve devs don't need homes and don't have bills to pay and happy working for nothing.

It's 100 unpaid interns fumbling with the code base, of course.

EDIT: I went off on one...

TLDR: ED is likely still the favourite child. And cash seems to be flowing its way ;)

Historically it would appear that ED still has the largest dedicated staffing, even compared to the production run for high profile titles like Jurrassic World:

  • JWE was scheduled to draw down from 75-100 staffing after launch. [June 2017]
  • ED staffing seems to be running at 'over a hundred' [May 2017]
  • Staffing at the time was 330 approx [June 2017]. Now 370 approx [July 2018]. (And Braben claims ED specifically is receiving an increase in dev resources due to improved earnings).

More recent info on current dedicated staffing looks like this:

100+ dev team with the majority focusing on the new era. (More sourcing on the dedicated staffing over recent years here: [1],[2],[3],[4]).

(Their broader staffing scenario is approx 440 staff, with a 4th franchise likely in full production (expected 2019) and a 5th & 6th seemingly in some form of production.)

It seems likely that ED gets the biggest resourcing slice out of all of their franchises.

Worth noting that ED's revenues are currently naturally dwindling, given the years of free updates and end of the console launch peaks etc:
If we use '120k pa per dev' cost calculations (which seems to be an industry benchmark of sorts), napkin maths suggests 12m+ costs, and that the other franchise profits may be required see ED to the late 2020 launch. So it seems the old kid on the block could be getting some money flow ;)

Assuming you are right that ED is currently not proffitable, and is being subsidised by its sibling games, I think at this point in time Elite still has a huge value for FDev, in that simply put, it shows the scale of their engines capabilities to potential clients... Yes they might be pumping more money into it just now than they are getting back from it, but it is by far and away their most comprehensive game with the biggest scope, and remains a showpiece, even yet.

However, in a few years time when Elite is a complete galaxy simulation with ecosystems, cities, surface conflicts, economies, interactive NPC's etc, there will reach a point where Elite will encompass every type of game play. At that point future clients, such as movie studios, etc, will be able to come to FDev and ask for a new game to tie in with their IP, knowing that FDev can do anything, not just theme parks and spaceships. And for that alone, it is worth it for FDev to reinvest profits from other, currently more lucrative titles in their portfolio into Elite. And if that happens to mean our game gets a few extra bells and whistles added onto it that its own revenue doesn't justify, who are we to complain about it?
