Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I've been putting it off (again) so I bit the bullet (again) and took the 'Conda to an HRES. Those smaller ships really are copping a shellacking when I open fire. The shields melt under the huge beam and those MC's feels like I have a ton of Spitfires deployed from each hard point. Consequently, I have renamed her "Noisy Cricket".

In some ways, when viewed from above and slowly panning back, I'm put in mind of the opening scene of SWIV as that star destroyer just keeps coming and coming.

Anyway, here's a gratuitous shot that in no way looks like a star destroyer at all.

This might come a bit too late, but I had my Keelback mining build saved from my Alt account, and Simon was asking about mining on a new account.

So here's the build, in case it helps at all. I found the Keely worked well as a miner, and it was cheap. I don't care for how it flies, but it got the job done :)

PS I didn't wind up using the mining lasers at all. Coulda done without 'em but I wanted to check so there they are.

Currently wandering the showrooms at jaques with a clipboard.
Colonia seems to have become more 'civilized ' since i was here last. New ships, more advanced engineering, more modules.
The Mamba is definitely drool-worthy.
So many people say that about the Mamba. It's one of the few ships I bought and immediately sold. When you're in the thing, your view is restricted to less than half of the top of your screen, because the rest is cockpit. Yeah, no thanks. I like to see outside, where stuff is happening.

:D I thought being explorer ranger and having seen NGC 7822 et al, that I had at least some exploring experience, but this trip has clearly shown me that I have not. For example I hadn't thought about the FSS being part of the scanner pack that came with the ship. I've never used it! Only the DSS. It was one of those I meant. Stopped at 14.000 ly from the Bubble. Need some rest. Tomorrow I'll try figuring out that FSS. Doh!
The dss can slow your journey time considerably,it is quite seductive.
Even the Fss will slow you, if you want the credits, though it's still faster than the old ADS.

That's useful to know.It sure looks like it's begging for some canyons to race though.<drool>

I've finally decided to try my hand at mining, this after cargo-delivering myself to ELITE status and almost $2B in credits- talk about late to the party! In the entirty of my ED time I've never tried mining with the exception of the practice simulation. I'm especially interested in deep core mining and have an Engineered Krait just waiting to be mine-outfitted.
There are some terific mining guides out there most of which I've read/ seen at YT. I think I undrstand the fundementals ( although the limpet thing still confuses me- how/ when do you deploy them exactly ?) Also, is it a given that you'll be NPC'd during the mining process ( I would try mining in Solo mode) ? Does this necesarily require weapons ? Also, can surface/ laser mining be lucrative, or not so much ?
I guess I'm still a little overwhelmed by how to begin mining.

I would say mining for credits, you have two options:
Core mining for Void Opals.
Surface mining in a double Painite Hotspot.

I do both, just to mix things up a bit.

NPCs can be a nuisance, but only when you first enter a ring (when your empty anyway) or if you relog (Runaway! Runaway!).
Also, once you set off to sell your goodies, you're probably gonna attract NPC attention in supercruise.

Personally I don't bother with weapons while mining, I just run all the time.

I opted for mining again today, but I decided to change it up a bit and go for something other than Void Opals. I wanted a change of scenery.

So I went looking for Benitoite instead. It sells for a little less, but still for a lot, and it's in Rocky rings instead of Icy ones, so everything looks different.

I found it quite a bit easier to spot the Core asteroids in the Rocky ring. The asteroids were smaller and blocked each other less, I suppose.

I filled up my hold in no time and sold it all for umpteen credits (that's a word that means "about 66 million"). It was a worthwhile trip, and not a single pirate attacked me. Maybe they only go after Void Opals. :p

Being lazy I have collector limpets doubled up on some of my mining tool triggers, the limpets will stop launching once you have deployed all your controller(s) can handle so they get deployed as soon as I am producing fragments for them to collect.

You are pretty much guaranteed a visit by some sort of NPC when you arrive at or log into a ring, as long as your cargo hold is full of nothing but limpets they won’t bother you if you have anything else in there run away and sell it. Weapons are therefore not compulsory.

Surface laser mining will earn more money than you are paying for fuel and limpets and the money from the 3 Ps is quite respectable but not up to the extremes of core mining.

Wow.Thats a lot of questions. And you'll get lot more detailed answers from the practiced miners,i'm sure, but one i can answer. Its not always the case that you will be attacked, but it happens more often than not .
However, generally, if they appear and scan you, providing your hold has nothing but limpets they will look for more profitable prey elsewhere and you can mine unmolested.
Beware, though,if you log off partway through mining, when you next log in they will re-appear if you do so within the rings, you will need to fight to retain your cargo.

I'm using the Krait MKII as my mining ship, too. I'll try to answer your questions.

1) Limpets are little drones that go and pick up the mining fragments and bring them back to your ship. You can launch them whenever you like, they'll hang around for a while, then die (how long depends on which controller you have). Of course it's best to launch them when they have something to collect. I launch them right after cracking open the asteroid. Make sure you have nothing targeted when you launch them, so that they will automatically pick up anything in the vicinity. Also remember to BRING SOME LIMPETS. You don't want to get out there and not have any. Not that I'd know about that. I take 50 limpets for a 64 ton cargo hold, and I usually have to dump some to make room before I'm done.

2) NPCs usually spawn when you enter the ring, or anytime you log off and on inside the ring. They will sometimes be pirates, sometimes police. If they are pirates, they will usually fly over and scan you for cargo. If you're only carrying limpets, they go away. If you have a bunch of expensive cargo you just mined, however, they will ask for some of it. You can give them what they want, and they'll (usually) leave you alone then. It's sometimes bugged. Or you can run away. I turn and blow them up, but I'm geared for it.

Best way to control the situation if you DO have to log off is to leave the ring. Get into Supercruise. Log off there. Then when you log back in, you can decide to re-enter the ring (and expect pirates), or just fly to a station and sell your stuff first.

When you are on your way to sell, and you have a cargo hold full of stuff, you will often be interdicted. Not every time, but lots. I just fight the interdiction myself, because I'd rather not get into combat at that point. I'm on my way home, go away pirate. If I actually lose the interdiction (almost never) then I'll fight. If I was in a ship that could not fight, I would high-wake out (that means jump to another system...not just into supercruise in the same system). That's the best way to escape and not get caught by mass-lock effects.

Surface mining can be lucrative, but it's a whole other skill set and ship setup. Learn it later. Focus on core mining for now.

Have fun and feel free to ask more questions. :)

Thanks so much for the detailed reply! What do you think of this Krait mining build, what have I missed ? What don't I need ?

Yeh, I could work with that. (y)
Stick a heat sink launcher in your spare slot. If you start getting scanned by pirates, drop a heatsink, boast and bye bye.
(What I do in my T-9)

That's a very decent miner, and the MK II is a very good mining ship. Easy to handle with proper space and good visibility.

For a pure core mining version, I've changed your config slightly. This is lighter, faster, and more maneuverable. Also, I have removed mining lasers, FSD booster and fuel scoop. You will always be able to find a hotspot nearby. Just evade interdictions of the pirates and you'll be fine. The ship still has plenty of fuel and a decent jump range. Instead i've added more collector limpets and cargo. That combined will increase your profit.

I also enhanced the shield. You don't need that, but it's a nice safety. One engineered shield booster often is better than two unengineered ones.

Personally I'm still on my way to Sag A*. I've found some very low entropy parts of the galaxy :)

It's a loooooong trip to Sag A* in a Mamba. Had to do RL stuff as well, so I'm still 7000 ly from the target, but further away from home then I've ever been, and still with 100% hull and no use for the AMU's.

You got everything. Probably don't need the mining lasers but you can bring 'em if you want. WeComeInPeace made some good suggestions, too.

I personally don't care about maximizing my profit, so I do things a bit differently. I take along a fighter bay because I might fight a pirate or two, and because I just like having the fighter flying along beside me as I mine. I only need 64T of cargo space for my needs. It takes me an hour or two to fill that up, and by then I'm ready to do something else for a while anyway. I always carry a fuel scoop. I have a big shield, prismatic. I have multicannons and a burst laser.

To make a mining build all I do is swap out a couple weapons, add a refinery and prospector limpet controller, and call it good. It's really my combat Krait build-in-progress, with minimal changes.

So as you can see, there's many ways to go about it. Your build has all the essentials and will do the job. Tweak it as needed as you gain experience.

And most of all, have fun!

Just got chain interdicted twice by the same gang, flying a T9. Escaped both times. In a T9!
It took ages! But now i know i can outfly the python and his chums,i feel a bit more comfortable. :)

Weird, isn't it? The T9 is so sluggish, it makes you wonder how on earth it's possible; but I've done it too.

I'm thinking that there must be some routine in the interdiction algorithm that checks against ship type. Probably wrong though!

ETA

I was wondering, are MCs the best weapon to use on ships when their shields are down?

That's really very kind, thank you so much. When I get back to my home base I'll fit out my Keelback, Eurydice, exactly like that and give it a whirl. Thank you, Commander!

(And not late at all - have just got back from Maia in my T6, was after the meta alloys for Felicity, once I drop those off with her mining was next up, might even be this evening, after I have dropped most of my brood at Beavers/Cubs/Scouts. So perfect timing, actually!)
