The Star Citizen Thread V10

I'm gonna touch on some of the current 'hypocrisy' drama and say that some of the superlative 'CIG is the evilest of evil' stuff is definitely excessive.

But a lot of the other parallels that have been drawn have been weak sauce to date. IE CIG definitely are baaaad on a lot of this stuff. Distinctly worse than average. On the monetised-non-delivery front. Be it add-ons for canned launch content being sold, or the canned pre-sold content itself. They are distinctly not good.

That's without even mentioning the larger miasma of 'seems like a helluva a lot of over-promise' for the launch product etc, that hangs over the project generally.

I really don't think any of that's particularly controversial.

The fact remains that CIG has potentially wasted so much money and time and did so by shady business strategies that releasing an "okay" game now will not provide compensations in the eyes of most people who are in financially. CIG sold stuff on promises in the past and them changing these promises gradually over time until none remain or are so altered that they dont resemble anything of the past sales they were made on makes the company criminal or scammy in my book.
The final straw for me to pull my money out of this disaster when I still had a chance was learning about all the shell companies CR and his family and friends have created in relation to this project. They exist only to drain money from a project, an accounting practice Hollywood uses to claim that movies don’t make a profit, so they don’t have to pay the people who made them extra should a movie prove to be successful.

I think his point is,if evil FD can sell limited time skins for £5. CIG can sell limited timed things(that may or may not exist)for hundreds of £’s.
Ignoring the fact that there isn’t actually a game quite yet.

No. Here is what happened. Agony points out that CIG mentions in an ad "don't miss out!", and claims this shows how they 'prey' on people. I point out how he doesn't care about such generic marketing phrases at all when it is, for example, FD doing that. "Don't miss out!" is such a generic, common thing to say when selling stuff it is absurd to attack CIG for it. He only makes a deal out of it because it is CIG, and CIG is evil, so everything CIG does must be terrible.

But as usual if you don't applaud every single attack on CIG, no matter how inane, you are immediately called an over-invested SC white knight or whatever. Pathetic.

That's the thing. One would think there are enough valid and legit criticisms to not have to stoop to the level some here do on a very regular basis. If anything it just weakens whatever point they have; it makes one look terrible biased and bitter, and that rarely is convincing.

The difference being FD sells stuff that exists whereas CIG sells stuff that doesn't exist and possibly may never exist, or by the time it exists it may be quite different from what was sold.

…and you can prove this, of course?

Surely it has to be taken in context though. Everyone in this thread is aware of broader practices by CIG beyond saying 'quick buy now' etc, which suggest they are more dubious than average. IE artificial scarcity combined with 'macro' purchase pricing etc. And again that's before getting to the odds of whether the content will even be delivered. (Which given the sheer range of functionality that's been pre-sold, and delivery to date, is pretty fair to question).

I think you're leaping on that post in isolation with a bit too much force :/

This....omg so much this +1

"This seriel killer has murdered dozens of people factually and we dont know how many more corpses are out there on his behalf. His trial is an ongoing affair for 7 years now and pretty much all the facts that are available have been made public."

"you know the constant bashing and calling out for justice really becomes boring, what is it with the persistent lawmen doing their job? Why cant they move on and drop this already? Its old news...nobody cares and whats done is done right?"

Can you see the parallel to SC and CIG here? If you are going to post something like "so SC is a murder case now?" then just lol at you ^^

Star Citizen is pretty much old news by now. Whoever cares about it has made up his/her mind. Theres hardly anything new to discuss...nothing that would change SCs course anyway. Its mostly fluff and the only news about game critical mechanics and features are the delay announcements or people figuering out CIG once again dropped them silently because roadmaps which anybody can access and which are written so confusingly that it takes 10 minutes off your hands to go through them because once again....mostly fluff.

If you personally are "okay" with whats happening or your money probably being lost thats great for you. That doesnt mean that anybody else should feel the same. Also if you personally are tired of all the bashing or "hyporcrisy" you can always walk away and turn your attention to something more worthwhile.

I am riding this train to its end to see CIG getting their just reward. They have been the epitome of incompetence and criminal marketing tactics for me, putting recent scandals and outcries to shame and the only reason we dont have a verified crapstorm on our hands directed at CIG is because the game and its development are so niche that hardly anyone in the greater game community knows about it or cares enough to participate.

I dont care about any of the game developments because they wont change a thing in the end. So I dont have all the details down....dont have to. Still can post here as long as I m on-topic. Tired of my or any of the other bashing/sarcasm/joking? Feel free to walk away or ignore.

There is a miracle chance that Star Citizen will turn out a great game and a better chance it ll be "just" a game. I m prepared to admit my folly in one of those cases. The other doesnt warrent any apology from me. Releasing something so little, so broken and hardly resembling what was promised is not an achievement. Nothing I can see makes me believe the "great game" will ever happen so I remain skeptical and keep pointing fingers at the responsible factor.....CIG.

I agree that CIG has made this nest they are sitting in at the moment, crapped full and stinking. They deserve all the criticism and bashing for shoddy craftsmenship and lack of reliability. The SC community at large has been patient and very forgiving with the majoritiy keeping up with CIGs constant failures and breaking of promises. And as more and more people keep waking up the "same old stuff" is popping up and you know what?

Most of it is as relevant and appropriate as it was 2 years ago. The meager changes and improvements dont justify the involved timeframe and money spent.

If this thread has proven one thing beyond doubt is that theres hardly anything to discuss about Star Citizen. But when it comes to its community or the responsible company things suddenly get interesting and they also keep this thread alive. Just throw in another "haters gonna hate" comment or put in a completely irrelevant "but ED did it too" post and see the thread explode. Try to discuss relevant SC mechanics and news and everybody falls asleep.

For me...its either pure trolling or a desperate attempt of blind defense on behalf of a project that cannot defend itself or has anything that could counter any of the "hate" directed at it. I might post less but I wont stop watching this as it unfolds. I ll keep checking DS twitter feed and YT videos. After all this time I dont feel bad for wanting to know how this crapstorm of a journey ends. CIG collapsing and being called out as the scam it probably was for years by now is the least form of justice I expect. If you are only after Star Citizen relevant news and tired of all the back-and-forth you might increase your browsing experience by utilizing the ignore comment or simply filtering the stuff you find interesting (even tho that probably reduces the feed to 1 or 2 relevant posts in 5 pages or so.....)

Sometimes a wagon pulls into town and a guy selling vials of proto-yagermiester tells you its whatever you want it to be.

Roberts doesn't have a wagon though he has a computer, you don't even catch a good buzz from his elixir because its a jpeg.... Dooh!

In my opinion the difference between limited items is that one company sells an unlimited amount over a time period while the other sells a limited number over a limited time period.

CIG will do things like 100x $1000 ships which are only available on Friday at 7PM EST. If you don't add one to your cart and hit the Pay Now! button fast enough you lose out. It's nothing more than complete psychological manipulation and it is quite sad to see people drawn in by it.
The secondary effect being that scalpers then inflate the prices on the grey market to try and cash in on those who missed out...

Idk if anyone remembers the late night QVC commercials here in the states selling questionable junk, especially the jewelry. They would super impose these horrible countdowns on the ugliest pieces of ratfink jewelry I've ever seen (this was as a 10 year old kid), literally say like Only 100 Left Order Now, and they would show occasional pop ups of the number going down and the sales people getting more excited and building to a cheesy fake crescendo and then start the next one. Even as a kid I knew this was fake.

I think the ridicule is Chris Roberts is a con man charlatan dream weaver who when using "Don't miss out" its a parody and a joke because it doesn't exist and probably won't ever, and the best thing that you could actually do is in fact to miss out. Where frontier has a actual game they are actually selling you something for. Two different leagues.

This all seems a tad familiar Sleuty. I think it's nearly at the point where we both shake our heads, leave the thread and come back when some actual news occurs, before the cycle repeats.

Using what's called a "fear of missing out" (official psychological condition) as marketing IS a predatory tactic and the argument "Everybody is doing it so it's okay" doesn't really mean anything.

It's not even about CIG. This is generally the case with game releases, for example. It's acceptable to have a standard edition and then the collector's edition for people who want more stuff and/or want to support the devs a bit more.
But the moment you introduce more game editions than that, every one of them with different bonuses and goodies, you're exploiting the FOMO in players, who are now unable to "have everything". EA's great at this.

I was amused by the recent post detailing the unfulfilled KS goals. It crosses my mind that the backers are playing a single system pre release. Transportation is available. Command and control is exercised but mostly by forum postings and meanwhile we meow like cats at each other as if we were pets.

Since SQ42 is the current focus, it's no surprise that SC is almost silent. The question though is when SQ42 is going to become visible. We are six months into the year now. Six months till 2020. Surely something should rumble out of the station soon. It's been well over six months since the focus moved to SQ42. When will the hyping engage properly for SQ42. Autumn, Winter or Spring 2020 or should we prepare for a later delay?

What this thread needs is a proper starry-eyed SC advocate.

It's been 6 months since Mr.Nowak's predictions for the year. A fitting time to check back in on them (my bold):

Great news. 3.4 is now LIVE!

2018 was a great year for me and for many people who backed this project. Most podcast and community orgs iterated the fact that compared to all years this has been the best due to new tech and content deliveries. As usual instead of being more closed CIG decided to be even more transparent and revealed the last two things that were not public. The Squadron 42 production roadmap and their financials. At this point CIG is the most open AAA studio in the game development industry. This week CIG also became the highest valued space video game company (496mil) blowing past Frontier at 360 and CCP at 425 million dollars.

My expectations for 2019 is the full delivery of Arccorp and MicroTech and all of its cities, outposts and moons. The repair, salvage and refuel mechanics. The addition of the second solar system. Possibly Nyx. Let's see how next year goes but if this year is any indicator SC will become even bigger and will reach a wider audience. I'll go grind that prospector now and see how long it takes me to get it.

I will come back and keep this community updated when 3.5 enters further game development and gets more exposure in late January until then happy holidays!

PS. Thanks for all the positive rep you dozens of lurkers!

Well a big tick for Arccorp. The race for the rest is on! :)

It's no 3.0 [2016], but you can't let those starry eyes burn too bright now dammit.

PS The new rep system suggests no rep was given to that post. Somebody please like it for purposes of fairness and balance.

No point in hyping prior to the beta. Only then can you playtest your reactions to the narrative campaign.

The epic hypocrisy is CRoberts saying (paraphrasing) that CIG's business and game dev model is so much better than those evil AAA production companies. Never mind that those AAA companies take on all the risk up front and must release a game to recoup those costs, whereas CRoberts incurs no risk, has no financial imperative to release a game, and lines his own pockets from donations in the meantime.
what CRobber has done is far worse than those "traitorous" KS game projects that sold out to Epic Store for timed exclusivity, at least those projects gets done and are not sucking 300 million dollars -and very possibly still more- from their fans, and we all know that CIG "sins" are far more numerous than that. Crobber and CIG are at this point in history, the de facto worst game developer ever and by significant margin. A combined entity from EA + Ubisoft + Activision + Bethesda + Microsoft + Paradox would still look like a saint compared to CIG.
