Valve Index VR headset

Well, Sweviver was swearing by wireless VR before he got pimax, and then the FOV trumped wireless... Although now that he is openly working for Pimax I kinda take his opinions with a (bigger) grain of salt ;-)

Meh, Sweviver. I have never been keen on his videos to be honest, he always seemed like a fanboy even before the Pimax! I guess he really should change his name now. PiSwe?

For me, youtuber can show enthusiasm when they like a headset. I think he has done the most detailed and technically sound headset tests so far. If you show enthusiasm for a pimax, you're fanboy, if you show enthusiasm for an index, you know how to appreciate it. :p

Index Shipped HYPEeeee

Mine also! I have a tracking number but nothing has changed since yesterday, it's just sat on "The parcel data was entered into the GLS IT system; the parcel was not yet handed over to GLS." since 2.00pm yesterday. Grrrrrrr! Hopefully its just an admin thing and it'll update shortly to show it in the UK and ready for delivery on the 27th or 28th.... Hopefully...

Of course they can, and they can also work for a particular company (such as is the case with SweViver) which places you in a postion where you are no longer able to have unbiased opinions you may have once had.

Seems like I got lucky. Mine was entered just after 1pm yesterday and was picked by GLS about 12hrs after... My friends who ordered not long after me also have their shipments not sent yet, like you. What's more strange, our tracking labels were created at the same time. Despite being in transit there's little chance I will get mine before weekend, and no Saturday deliveries. Bummer. If they used DHL it would've been fine...

Well mine arrived today.

Overall I must say that it is an improvement over my V-Pro with GearVR lens swap.

First impressions:

  • A small FOV increase over Vive/V-Pro/Oculus (more noticable in vertical FOV). Not as large of an increase as I'd have liked.
  • Black levels & colours are not as good as a V-Pro. I've not used a Rift-S but I'm guessing they're going to be similar on this front.
  • Sounds is great.
  • Index Controllers are awesome!
  • The HMD is very comfortable to wear and leaves no lasting marks on face, even when tightly fitted.
  • 120Hz mode does feel more fluid than 90Hz - of the games I've tested I've had no real issues running at 120Hz.
  • No god rays to speak of and image clarity is great.
  • SDE greatly reduced compared to CV1 / Vive - maybe a tad better than the V-Pro
  • The pass through camera is great and a big improvement over the V-Pro's
  • Large 'sweet spot'
  • Pretty much edge to edge clarity, the outer edge of the image does blur slightly but you can look around with your eyes more than before.
Elite Impressions with Index HMD (based on a quick flight)

  • No improvements to precieved jaggies
  • Black "bars" on the sides on your vision are more noticable in Elite due to them being actually black and the screen not showing true black.
  • Image quality is very clear and text is very easy to read
  • I adjusted to the lighter blacks quite quickly but I could tell they were lighter.
  • Performance in 120Hz mode was better than expected, but I did notice some quite large lag spikes on station approach and while landing.
  • 80Hz mode in Elite plays very well and the dip in refresh rate isn't really noticable. Lowering the target frame rate to 80FPS gives a lot of head room for GFX settings to be raised. I'll like lt use this mode for Elite.
Overall - a great 'side grade' from a V-Pro. The only let down is the blacks but they're not that bad. It's the first HMD since my DK2 I've actually put on and been pleased with the results.

Would you say it's worth upgrading from V-Pro if you only play ED (90 % of the time) and flight/racing sims in VR? I have Samsung Odyssey+ (with VR cover & head strap so comfort is not an issue anymore) and am having hard time to justify €1059 price tag.

Likely not if that is your use case. I've not used an O+ so I cannot compare and I have no idea how the lenses are on that device in terms of glare, sweet spot and god rays. Personally I'd say its only worth it if you have the Lighthouses already.

The Index is miles ahead of the stock V-Pro, but only marginally better than a V-Pro + GearVR lens swap.

Thanks for that. What GPu are you running?

Dr Kaii has tweeted some first impressions too.

People’s experiences do seem to be a bit all over the place, especially re god rays. For example MRTV was reporting a lot of glare in high contrast scenes. I’m wondering if the headset is particularly sensitive to being dialled in correctly.

Could be but you would think someone like MRTV who isn't a VR novice knows how to dial in the HMD properly for his IPD.

According to this reddit post, running a Steam integrity check re-downloaded a missing file and fixed an issue with washed-out colours.

I did that this morning, I've not tested Elite since though, its too warm to be indoors! It'll be interesting to see if it fixes the washed out colours.

I've not noticed any, Elite seemed pretty on par with my V-Pro + GearVR lens swap, so no glare or god rays to speak of. Do MRTV and SweViver review anything that isn't Pimax without bias?

SweViver is I believe now employed by Pimax, but the MRTV first impressions review linked above seemed free of bias to me. At about 1h20m he comes down broadly in favour of the Index over the Reverb and Pimax5K+.
