Well mine arrived today.
Overall I must say that it is an improvement over my V-Pro with GearVR lens swap.
First impressions:
- A small FOV increase over Vive/V-Pro/Oculus (more noticable in vertical FOV). Not as large of an increase as I'd have liked.
- Black levels & colours are not as good as a V-Pro. I've not used a Rift-S but I'm guessing they're going to be similar on this front.
- Sounds is great.
- Index Controllers are awesome!
- The HMD is very comfortable to wear and leaves no lasting marks on face, even when tightly fitted.
- 120Hz mode does feel more fluid than 90Hz - of the games I've tested I've had no real issues running at 120Hz.
- No god rays to speak of and image clarity is great.
- SDE greatly reduced compared to CV1 / Vive - maybe a tad better than the V-Pro
- The pass through camera is great and a big improvement over the V-Pro's
- Large 'sweet spot'
- Pretty much edge to edge clarity, the outer edge of the image does blur slightly but you can look around with your eyes more than before.
Elite Impressions with Index HMD (based on a quick flight)
- No improvements to precieved jaggies
- Black "bars" on the sides on your vision are more noticable in Elite due to them being actually black and the screen not showing true black.
- Image quality is very clear and text is very easy to read
- I adjusted to the lighter blacks quite quickly but I could tell they were lighter.
- Performance in 120Hz mode was better than expected, but I did notice some quite large lag spikes on station approach and while landing.
- 80Hz mode in Elite plays very well and the dip in refresh rate isn't really noticable. Lowering the target frame rate to 80FPS gives a lot of head room for GFX settings to be raised. I'll like lt use this mode for Elite.
Overall - a great 'side grade' from a V-Pro. The only let down is the blacks but they're not that bad. It's the first HMD since my DK2 I've actually put on and been pleased with the results.
