Mining can ...

Oh, very much so. :)

Thought I’d try the new mining stuff today ... would like to unlock Selene Jean (not for anything she does but for the next engineers in the chain ...) and figured some void opals might be nice.

Well, you might want to do the good old laser mining in a double painite hotspot. It will take some good hours to mine 500t if you never mined anything before, but the paycheck will be consistent. Otherwise, you only need 10t of painite to unlock miss Selene Jean.

Firstly, it appears you can’t actually drop out of supercruise cleanly at the hotspots so you have to just “smash” into the rings and then fly the 50-100km you now are away from anything useful.

Not really, you can be anywhere in the hotspot - you dont need to hit bulls-eye

Once you’re there? Mechanics are screwed. Wave scanner highlighted a load of yellow/orange asteroids but NOT ONE actually had a core of anything, never mind the void opals this was apparently a “hotspot” for. Spent 3 hours searching and mining materials from anything with a medium or higher content rating.

THere is only one shade of yellow and one shape of asteroid that yields valuable deep-core materials.
Not hard to watch some YT how-to movies and find out the colour and the shape

Come on, everyone is doing it, you can do it too.

That was essentially my thinking ... sure, I’ve calmed down a bit now but still genuinely surprised but the total lack of anything turning up - just look at the number of people replying to this thread with “I make 100M an hour” or “I’ve made 4 billion doing this” ... how?! Better luck? Insane levels of patience?

Once you learn to spot the right asteroids, the rate it's roughly one core every 10-15 minutes

I am mining somewhere not too far from Sol so I expected the hotspot to be depleted - obviously not. I estimate that one in every 30ish small bright yellow asteroids has a core. Look at the ones that have really dazzling colours even when close up.

Mind if I ask where? :)
Go leesti.. then find the crucis star just near it. Go to the ring planet that ends 6-6
. You need to discover scan it to reveal the hotspots.. there is an alexandrite and void opal. Keep hitting that pulse wave scanner..

anywhere. doesn't matter. I usually start by finding a station paying high prices and then look for planets with ice rings nearby. usually find several so close I can leave my fuel scoop at the station and take a cargo rack. Once you find a station with good VO prices and find a hotspot you can leave your fuel scoop and DSS at the station and just cram your ship full of cargo racks. remember you can use your refinery to "store" about 8 more tons depending on what size refinery you have....just don't forget to sell them or you'll have an exciting trip back out to the hotspot.

240 tons of cargo and 8 more in the refinery.

In a cutter you could do over a billion in 1 run and manuvering a cutter around all those rocks....meh....but it would be a VERY long run....probably 8-10 hours.

At the risk of sounding flippant, practise what exactly? I can understand needing to practise the whole seismic charge placement, manoeuvring into the right positions to use the abrasion blasters, etc but I didn’t even get the RNG to be “allowed” to start practising that stuff.

Am I missing something? All I did was:

1. Probe rings
2. Fly to hot spot
3. Use pulse scanner
4. Fire prospector limpet at yellow/orange rocks
5. Discover no core, no fissures
6. Repeat steps 3 - 5

Am I missing something? Is the RNG really that harsh? Even pirate spawn rates on the old 100+ massacre missions were never this bad!!
VO is not Yellow/Orange they are bright Canary Yellow and shaped like popcorn.
When coming into a ring outside of the hotspot(no pirates) slow as much as possible the moment you see rock exit hyper and no smash ;)
Rinse and repeat.

Can you show me the build. I've only got 128t and I go through limpets like crazy. I have 2 64t cargo and everything else is for mining. Can you please describe your build and the order of your optional

To be fair, I've had a couple of sessions where I've come up almost empty.
I guess it's just bad luck that I picked an area that didn't have any DC 'roids in front of me or I picked somewhere that somebody else had already cleaned-out.
Fortunately, I'd had good results beforehand, so I knew what is possible and it didn't put me off.

Like I just said in another thread, the 'roids are around so it's not worth going to a lot of effort to look for them.
Just start off 1000km or so from the hotspot marker and fly in a vaguely straight line toward it, checking out any bright yellow 'roids as you go.

On that note, another top-tip is, if you're mining in an inhabited system always go to a starport/platform and check the traffic reports.
If it shows a heap of ships visiting that system in the last 24h it probably means a lot of people have already been mining in the same place you're planning on mining.
Try to find a system where there's very little traffic and you'll know the hotspot probably hasn't been picked clean already.

When you only want to unlock Selene then you can mine everything, no matter what it is. Mine 500 tons of scrap and throw it after the job away. Selene want only 10 tons of painite.
