The End?

See you in 2020.
He'll be back. You'll see. So will many others, me included.
I'll definitely be back in 2020, if not before. I was bored last Fall as well, but then 3.3 dropped and I found great enjoyment in the new exploration tools. I did a LOT of exploring using these tools in the months that followed. But like all repetitive activities, this too became boring after awhile.

Yesterday when I fired up the game, I couldn't even be bothered to fly my ship in SC for long, so I flipped on the SCA and did some dishes while my ship flew itself to my destination. In other words, even flying my ship feels 'meh' right now.

But in 2020, space legs and base-building (and hopefully spaceship interior customization) would add an entirely different dimension to the game for me. So would atmospheric planets and maybe even water worlds! Sure would be nice to have a proper NPC crew as well. Oh, and I'll get a graphics buff from switching to a PS5. Point being, I'm bored with today's game, not next year's game (hypothetically speaking). It's just that late 2020 feels so far away!

Been trying REALLY hard to keep interested, but not succeeding. If the upcoming features interested me, I might find it easier, but legs leaves me totally cold, it's not the direction I wanted the game to go at all. I fear if I walk away, I won't be back, and then I will just be a furious ripped off late lepper.

Wasn't playing a game before ed, and have no interest in other games.

While I'm personally very excited about legs (assuming they are done right), a lot of people feel they will be optional. I'm not quite sure how Frontier will work this out. Perhaps, for example, you can sit in your chair all day like we currently do as long as you pack an AMFU and repair limpets (I'm thinking exploration), but people like me would have the option to leave these home and fix my ship manually. I'm not looking for Star Citizen legs, but rather Subnautica legs, though even Subnautica legs are 'mandatory'. Like I say, I really don't know how Frontier will implement this as optional content will also making it good content and not some gimmick, but that's a topic for a different thread.

And FWIW, Braben let people know early on that space legs were always part of the plan. 🤷‍♂️

It's pretty normal. I took multiple time-outs too. Until they brought in the chunky AI. I just can't see myself peashooting through those to piece the ginormous grind together that would allow me to cruise the game like I used to. But that's surprise development for you.

Frank will help with some perspective.
This song always makes me thing of the good times.
Maybe once ARX arrive and you earn them in time spans measured in half-lifes, you will play again.

I don't know why you want me to give Old Duck some perspective, or what that has do with his quitting but here goes...

We are insignificant particles in a vast empty void of nothingness. Anything we do in our meagre lifetimes will amount to nothing of importance in a universe which doesn't know we exist let alone care. Eventually the stars and galaxies will dissipate into a homogeneous heat slightly above absolute zero.

Godspeed Old Duck. May the wind be at your back, and can I haz yer stuff?

Yup, FDEV has recently (in the last 2 years) only added optional contents to the game (except the FSS for exploration and the deep core mining).
Mission system require a complete overhaul, not because it's bad but because it should be the most dynamic part of the game and it's always the same. I would expect few new mission types at each new content release.
Then too much time waiting for new contents: legs, atmospheric worlds, real Thargoid meneace, gameplay on planet surface
So it's normal that the experienced players don't feel involved or attracted by the game anymore.
FDEV defined a 10 years development but the content released in the first 5 years (half of development) have been absolutely insufficient.
The only high quality part of the game is the one that was released in the first year. It's very said that FDEV couldn't keep a good quality level of DLC's throughout the following years.

The thing that amazes me is the number of commanders with thousands of hours in this game. I started playing two and a half years ago and feel I’ve only barely scratched the surface of things to do and see. Aside from flight simulators, I don’t know of any games that keep players engaged for so long.

It's easy to get bored playing this game for a long time. I've been playing since the first alpha, have five accounts on PC and one on PS4, and I still leave thinking "I'm done" fairly regularly. Not rage quitting, just "Yup, done that now.".

Recently fired the game up for the first time this year, on both PS4 and PC, and I'm re-learning all the controls and the peculiarities of each system.

The bottom line is, with all its obvious faults and problems, there is still no other game quite like Elite. There never was, and there never will be.

So when I leave, I just wait for that itch to start again at the back of my mind. It grows over time, and eventually it has to be scratched. Even if that means buying another account or resetting your save to start again - there is still no other game quite like Elite. There never was, and there never will be. 🤷‍♀️

Is it migration time again duck? I mind you doing something similar about a year ago? Anyways, take care... o/
A year ago was more of a rage quit, or at least a "I'm leaving until you fix these horrible bugs!" quit. Until very recently I've been of the mind that, "Fix these bugs and I'll enjoy the game again." Research my posts and you'll see this to be true. But now, now I'm not so sure that even bug fixes would make me enjoy the core gameplay.

That's why OP isn't a "Frontier sucks" post, as I'm not really blaming Frontier for me growing bored. I loved the game as it was in the early days (and this was before improvements to engineering, planet coloring, exploration, etc). In this case, it's not the game - it's me.

for me, seeing that the future of this game is likely legs and bases, I just have no desire to play anymore knowing the game is headed in a direction I don't like. I'm a VR player and I just don't see walking around and building bases while seated with a HOTAS as very good. I bought Elite to fly space ships in VR. if I wanted an alien FPS Id buy Halo.

Since 2.0 I don't think FDev has added many features I liked. Engineers, planetar landings, and the Cyclops goids were good and pretty well balanced. the 3.x update was ok too. but everything else, the "signature" features....passengers multicrew squadrons and now fleet carriers...just not for me.

Its a game thats thin on content and creating gameplay I'm not interested in. I'm still hopeful and kind-of paying attention in case they do end up doing something for those of us who just want to fly space ships in VR but I think I'm being too optimistic.

To be honest I don't feel bored with this game, yet. But I try to do different things in turn and sometimes I search the forums for inspiration. That's how I found out about Operation Montgomery Scott, an effort to increase the levels of Colonia Engineers. I've been in Colonia since. Lately, and in order to scratch the recurring exploration inch, I'm out in The Conduit trying to find Crystalline Shards to top up G4 raw materials. I managed to find 2 planets additional to the one mentioned in the Codex. It's a slow process but I hope to find more.
Maybe you'll get back your inspiration soon.

Fly safe, CMDR.

problem is Elite is trying to create "community gameplay" where masses of players work on something bigger than themselves. Their individual gameplay is completely meaningless and the final result can always be godhanded (and sometimes is) by FDev. I'm looking for more individualist gameplay. I don't go in for that commie socialist stuff. Not going to grind for the greater good. I don't necessarily need to have a visible impact on the game, I just want to have gameplay that doesn't require dozens of lemmings doing the same thing for a reward.

who knows....maybe FDev will implement carriers in a way that enables new individual gameplay without weighing it down with grind. I'm not holding my breath.

Elephant Leather ARX. Think about it! New options, new choices.

This said, I finally DELETED WoT this week from ALL my computers (again), this time for REAL and EVER after 7 years. Until next time ;)

O7,
🙃

Sad to hear Old Duck. I hope you still stay around on the forum since I really enjoy your posts.

That said, I completely understand. I was on a hiatus myself here, and back to play a little bit, but it doesn't have the same pull for me either. I'm not at the point of completely dropping, but I can totally see that it might happen to me too one day.

And no, you can't haz my stuff. If space legs and base building truly are coming to the game someday, I'll be back!
Can I haz your Arx then? No, wait, we don't have it yet. But when we do, can I haz it?

None of my kids are playing Elite either right now, but they might be coming back for either carriers, legs, or base building.

Btw, you can always quit Elite, but you can never leave the forum... mkay. Hotel California style.
