Elite on an Ultra wide monitor

I play 80/20 split between VR and across three screens @ 5760x1080. At that width, there is some stretching on the sides, but I don't really look directly at the sides of the display that much, mostly the outer parts of the display are just my peripheral vision, and the slight distortion doesn't really have a negative affect when viewed like that

so I'm confused there used to be specific pc hardware subforum here, where is it now? anyway to answer the OP : people got it wrong.

there are stretching on both the right and left side of the screen starting past approximately 18:9 image aspect ratio (out of 21:9) and it's clearly noticeable, image is distorted wide, planets would look oval and text would look bigger on the side.

this is an issue that few games that supports ultrawide aspect ratio can have, but funnily ED is the only one that I play that suffers from this. And this thing several years ago made it into Nvidia marketing point where we have Nvidia CEO himself advertised the solution, but nothing is newsworthy since then lol, because just so few games suffer this issue anymore, damn it I can't remember the name nor the demonstration video anymore :(

One issue that’s come up frequently on widescreens is that in the system maps, the verbiage and pointer line do not line up with the planet/station you’re trying to point at. Gets very frustrating at times. Regards
I would suggest you to try to switch OPTIONS/GRAPHICS/MOUSE CURSOR to RENDER WINDOWS BASED CURSOR
that helps at least in the galaxy maps, systems maps has still some problems but its better then the OS CURSOR

I also have a 2560x1080 and I could not go back to 1920x1080

For those of you using triple screen setups...
consider using portrait mode. 3240x1920
It may not be quite as wide, but does give you much better vertical viewing angle.

You may have to debezel the monitors though (remove the casing), as most monitors have a much wider bottom bezel

5760 x 1080 is great for FPS games, being able to have a wider horizontal field of view,
but personally, I find that portrait mode is much more useful in Space or flight sims.

I am just waiting for a true zero bezel, or edge to edge monitor to come out, so I can by 3 of them. :geek:

Mine works fine, the only bug I have is in the system map. Sometimes the pointer doesn't point to the correct planet, but it's easy to adjust to.

This happens because layer with floating menu assumes that screen always 16:9.
At the same time layer with planets respects display dimenstions.
This is either not tested or accepted as low priority issue.

Wide format monitors are pretty common these days. You'd think they'd fix it. It doesn't really look like it would take a lot of work to do.

as a follow up...

monitor is working. I like the panoramic views. I see what people mean about the map, though. Hope they fix that some day.

I play in 21:9 or ultra wide if you will.

Its flooking beautiful.the screen is..l it's like your Cmdr is sat further back in his/chair chair. It feel more natural to be honest. I can keep track of targets a lot better with my 21:9. It uses more of my GPU to run but this isn't a problem. I use 21:9 with trackIR (or my own DIY track IR hat)

As well as the map fix, is there ever going to be a fix for the horizontal stretch at the edges of the screen? The oval planets are really distracting.
Some of the comments on a reddit thread claim that it's because of rectilinear projection, however it's far worse in Elite than in other games (for comparison, Quake 3 looks just fine - a 20 year old game engine!). Some comments elsewhere claimed that it's because elite renders internally at 16:9 and then does a non-linear stretch, similar to how old TVs would stretch 4:3 content to fit 16:9.

Is there any chance of maybe not doing that?

I recently upgraded to a 49" 32:9 super ultrawide monitor. 3840x1080 is almost as immersive as using my Rift S and it doesn't get your face all sweaty after playing more than an hour.

The map bug is even more annoying though.

After so many years with the 21:9 issues (and based on the assumption that most players still use 16:9) , I did give up the hope that we will see a solution in the current ED version. Right now I guess that many problems and issues will be addressed in the major update (NEW ERA) end 2020. That update should contain changes in the codebase of ED as it seems. Therefore I asume FD will not use manpower to resolve them twice, in the current ED version and the NEW ERA version. Of cause this is just a guess. Now that new features (FC) are delayed I woud like to see this corrected in a closer update. But as we dont have any info what issues FD is working on... I dont think much about it.
What I can say 100% is that if we still have this issues in the new ERA... I will be very very disapointed.

UPDATE:

I have been testing this Acer X34

Nearly ZERO issues in Elite Dangerous. Stretching is not even noticeable, I've had many people and gamers check it out and ask them. They always reply it is not noticeable.

DON'T SHOOT THE MESSENGER.
