Cobra Mk 4: open it up for everyone to buy this Xmas during Special Effect Livestream

I know about the CM4 and the early backers, the LEP etc. I am also an early backer, a LEP owner and I have 4 or 5 CM4's for module storage.
You're suggesting that Rubbernuke is using a cynical mechanism to achieve some other goal. I'm just trying to understand what you believe that goal to be, and why he might be trying to achieve that goal.

Can't you see I'm evil in wanting to give access to an exclusive ship I own (for a limited time) that makes other people happy that missed the chance to own one and raises awareness and funds for the FD charity livestream (that might happen again this year)?

I honestly believe I'm possesed by Satan for suggesting such a horrific thing.

It’s a contentious issue that can’t be solved by tagging on charity.

I suspect you are just now realising that you have no central thesis other than that you dislike the idea of the cynical use of sick children.
Would that be a reasonable analysis of your argument?

If that's the case then let's close this particular thread hijack and move back to the original (and I'd suggest altruistic) proposition that the CM4 might be made available for a limited period to any players who feel that they'd happily support FDev's chosen "good cause" in return for the right to be able to buy the CM4 in-game.

i can help out with this one, i think:

i just suppressed the irrelevant bits that you added of your own :)

rubbernuke just had an idea. he thought it was great, but it's actually lousy level bad. as a result, he just bumped the cobra4 fishbowl and now it's all excitement and indignation in here. a venerable tradition! nothing more, nobody should be accusing him of having an agenda (other than entertaining us) and afaik nobody has. (i might have skipped something, though. just drink!)

How is it bad? As far as I can tell its a few grumpy LEP owners feeling hard done by that have an axe to grind with FD about LEP value.

if drewcarnegie hasn't managed to get sense into your stubborn head by now i might as well not even bother. 😂
but i'll try:

1. "problem of exclusivity" doesn't exist. "exclusivity" exists. it isn't in itself a problem and doesn't need to be solved. it just is.
2. vouching for charities is nice. a company earning millions using them for self-promotion isn't.
3. besides, 1. and 2. have nothing to do with each other, so why the arxe would you want to put them together to solve a non-existing problem? on such a delicate subject no less?
4. that you don't care about the cobra4 is irrelevant for it being exclusive or not. understand the situation already: it is "exclusive forever".
5. your proposal that only those able to shell out 5 pounds for your good cause should be blessed is simply naive and disgusting. (if you don't get this, forget about it.)

A more accurate equivalent would be that tier 2 would give you the right to be able to purchase a Ferrari. Actually, if you send me £10 in the post I'll grant you that right myself.

That makes sense, but isn't what I want. Hence it violates both core principles of a Cobra Mk. IV thread.

Please, I enjoy a good laugh.

1. "problem of exclusivity" doesn't exist. "exclusivity" exists. it isn't in itself a problem and doesn't need to be solved. it just is.

But its a nice tool to use to get maximum funds for said charity, while giving people a chance to own the ship in a way thats supposedly acceptable to some LEP hardliners who view FD as money grabbing if they go back on the Sacred Vow™.

2. vouching for charities is nice. a company earning millions using them for self-promotion isn't.

But FD would not be earning anything from it. In essence 'gifting' the CM4 would be a nice adult gesture from LEP people. You could apply this point to any of the previous livestreams which to you is shameless self promotion.

3. besides, 1. and 2. have nothing to do with each other, so why the arxe would you want to put them together to solve a non-existing problem? on such a delicate subject no less?

Because its a nice thing to do. There is a demand, a need and a cause. And 'delicate subject?' You do realise this is a game right, and that you are fighting over a ship thats mediocre at best? In the end you are arguing about the principle and not the real world benefits doing this might bring to a lot of people.

4. that you don't care about the cobra4 is irrelevant for it being exclusive or not. understand the situation already: it is "exclusive forever".

But like all things on this forum, its my opinion and I think its fine for people to have a CM4 in a way that benefits charity.

5. your proposal that only those able to shell out 5 pounds for your good cause should be blessed is simply naive and disgusting. (if you don't get this, forget about it.)

Er, what? Being Satan obviously makes it hard for me to understand this point. By all means donate freely- but you will get a lot more cash raised (which is the intention of a livestream) if you offer something that people want in return. There is no blessing involved at all, just putting the two together in a well used fund raising tactic.

I was completely apathetic to owning this ship when I first heard about it...now after the plethora of threads on the subject, I dream of owning one to see just how bad it really is!

But alas, a dream itself is but a shadow....

...and this makes me, if not actually disgruntled, far from being gruntled!

Seriously, Frontier's lack of forethought is astonishing in its ineptitude - hmmm, in my short time involved in Elite, I'm beginning to notice a pattern here! Everyone knows that the gamer demographic has a good proportion of the most petty, avaricious, covetous & childish individuals - many bordering on ASD - that one could wish to meet, hence this issue was a wholly predictable ticking dork time-bomb from the moment they announced it.

Its exclusive now. The livestream would allow you to get it. After the livestream its less exclusive than it was. Its not that hard to understand? How much 'worth' is in a ship anyway?

No, that makes it no longer exclusve, not less exclusive. Its exclusivity lies in its original exclusive contract, if you break the contract to provide more then it's no longer exclusive. I really don't think you understand the meaning of the word exclusive. I'll post the relevant meaning here;

2. restricted to the person, group, or area concerned.

The "group" concerned are the ones who obtained it for early purchase of the game, if you then supply it to another group, even if it's just a limited number, it thus becomes no longer exclusive, just "hard to get." In other words exclusive is a binary property of an object or thing. It's either exclusive or it's not, something can't be "a little bit exclusive."

But not everyone will have it even after that event, so its still exclusive to some, just like the paints that pop up from time to time.

1. (exclusivity) and 2. (charity) are still unrelated. you're mixing up things here. if c4 would be a good tool, so would be any other goodie. i'm not even sure about the whole charities thing in this social media context but fair enough. even so, why on earth would you want to use precisely what shouldn't be used, because it is ... you guessed it, "exclusive"? you still don't get that that just doesn't make any sense?

But like all things on this forum, its my opinion and I think its fine for people to have a CM4 in a way that benefits charity.

your opinion is just fine. you should realize that your opinion can't go over facts (exclusivity) and decisions that are way out of your control. that's for frontier to say. see:

i am totally with you in that i don't give a damn about the cm4, and i gladly would give it to anybody if i could (i would miss the threads, though 😢).
i could agree that "exclusivity" might be a bad choice. not really, i think people could just grow up and accept it, sheesh, but whatever. it's controversial to say the least.

but the thing is that frontier backed themselves into this corner and are stuck in it. there is no good way out. neither your opinion, nor mine, nor any good intentions matter in the slightest. if they decide out of the blue to unleash the damn ship then so be it, i'm fine. but they will have broken a contract, that's a fact. i don't think they would do so except in very special circumstances, and with very strong reason. i honestly don't think your idea could qualify. but frontier have baffled me more than once with beyond silly moves. imo, their best move is not to move at all, that is something they do very well and i expect them to keep doing exactly that.

Er, what? Being Satan obviously makes it hard for me to understand this point.

from satan to satan, i'd paint you more as an idealist. i really didn't expect to convince you. :D i feel you're just taking in account your own good intentions while disregarding some hard facts and considerations and circling in your main argument: it would be sooo nice.

no, it actually wouldn't! 🤪
but let's not despair, that's for frontier to decide and they are always listening! i could use the comedy!

It is, what you do and seem to enjoy doing.

Quite often, I find it amusing, but then you sometimes, let your venom; take things too far.

Er, OK. I never realised I was some monstrous forum beast devouring the innocent. I thought in my naivety I was, you know, arguing my point.

Of course you are; being as naive, as you are.

Note to self: I must re-evaluate, how I approach and perceive, your posts. I must take into consideration, your tender years, apparent innocents and take, everything you have to say; with a pinch of salt. No problem.
