Rebel Galaxy Outlaw

anyone know to shut up the "press x to fast travel, y to supercruise" reminders that keeps blipping on your screen when you decide to just fly somewhere without that? I turned off Hints, but it keeps persisting.

I chose veteran for the start, which gives all the assists but limits your starting equipment.

I like the auto-pursue thing quite a bit, actually.

Obviously I have no idea how that plays or feels like but in theory it sounds like you have to play "less"? Like the game is playing for you? Or do I have the wrong impression?

That really depends on what your definition of 'play' is. Auto-pursuit just keeps down the amount of circling and jousting that you have to do manually, and the aim assist helps land more shots which is helpful when you're flying with a gamepad. I'm still quite enjoying myself and don't feel that I'm missing out on anything. Oh, I can certainly play 'hardcore' with HOTASes and whatnot - I've been playing space sims since the early 90s - but it's nice to just let the game take over some of the busywork.

I chose SIM.
The controls are a bit weird and needs a fair bit of tweaking and tuning, but it's really in the spirit of good old Privateer.

I'm enjoying it, but think I'll restart in 'Normal' mode. Took me a while to realise the reason I was having issues fighting stuff was the lack of colour coding in the radar, because of course in Veteran mode the first radar you get is only basic - no FoF. Then I found myself grinding for the $$$ to get a better radar, at the same time learning the controls, so (for me) switching to Normal for a first run through makes sense. Plus it means I can get back to the main plotline before I forget it :)

Still not worked out how to get away from overpowered enemies (except through the rebuy screen :) ) - talking on the radio hasn't convinced anybody and I need to work out how to flee - apparently they all have afterburners too :)

But it's a fun little game, these teething troubles are all operator error - but excuse me, I need to go clear some mine fields (which got a lot easier once I worked out autofollow :D )

Edit: Just had to exit via a task-kill - up until now I've been dying a lot so could always get to the splash-screen - but I have no idea how to exit otherwise :)
Edit2: Aha - Exit To title - at the top of the Settings menu ... of course 😝

I've had a lot of success using comms to get attackers to stop. Maybe 50% or even a little higher. If you have cargo you'll have an option to drop it and that will increase your success rate.

You'll definitely hit some pockets of enemies that will shred you even so, but it's been rare. I've got a decent ship now (a Sonora) with three weapons, rear turret, ECM, dumbfire launcher, upgraded armor and IFF scanner. Been fun shredding those lower level pirates in Jackrabbits. :)

Poke around the bars and try your hand at pool or dice poker, too. Sometimes you'll get an NPC putting up ship equipment for a wager.

Watched a few gameplay vids here and there, nothing major on the storyline, but it does seem like the space game that needed to make a comeback. Cool soundtrack, and that really nifty Privateer Righteous Fire vibe :D And I love how even the images of the radars just take you straight back to WCP. Sofar still holding back and waiting for a possible Steam/GOG release, since my backlog would last me through retirement (if I ever reach that age), but kudos to Double Damage for resurrecting the arcade-y space sim genre for a new generation. The more I see the more I feel that Disney made a big boo-boo not getting this for a new X-Wing game.

Good tips on there - helped a lot :)

Would never have guessed that you could see your cargo in the area where the settings are, and I'd completely missed that you could get the area overview during combat (y)

Now on my second ship, and despite what OA said - the grind is real :) (Though also fun)

In some ways I'd like the 'let's remove SC times from ED' crew to see how it work in RGO - it makes for faster gameplay but I find it more tiring and sessions tend to be much shorter. Which is either good or bad ;)

Now, I need to do another session, see if I can get used to the different HUD layout on the new ship, I keep looking the wrong way :)

Out of interest have you played Rebel Galaxy (the former game)? That one has a very real grind as well but I actually welcomed it in that case as it gave me a sense of progression and achievement and wasnt really all that bad. So if you have played both how "bad" is Outlaws grind in comparison to the former Rebel Galaxy?

I haven't played the original so can't comment on that. I don't think the grind is bad, just funny how OA can pretend it's not there 🤷‍♀️

My issue at the moment is with the mission ratings - they don't seem to relate to the missions very much - take one 'Mild' mission and you get there to find the cops have actually completed the mission for you - take another and you're alone surrounded by 10 tough NPCs. I know I need to git gud at the game, but being nearly one-shotted every so often is a bit tiring. Then again - it is supposed to be old-school, so I guess that's fine :)

Well, to be fair, OA did a lot of shilling for Frontier as well, when ED needed it.
And it's not like he's a professional news outlet. He's allowed to have biased opinions.

For what it is worth
Although I am still not very far in the game its grind doesnt seem as bad as the original but that could be due to the inability to move up and down in the original <g>
While the grind is probably real in both games it seems to me as less than the first but then again I didnt mind it in that one either.
Take care

There is an obvious money grind, but I really don't seem to mind it. I can ferry cargo, mine, do missions and fight in between. But it really doesn't feel like a grind, more like "let's find the next opportunity to make some more cash".

Ok, I've put a few hours in and I think this is decidedly average.

Flying to different destinations is point your ship at a waypoint and hold A.

Combat is point your ship at a target then press Left Trigger to auto aim and hold Right Trigger till target is dead, periodicly pressing X to launch a missile.

This is what I've spent the majority of the game doing.

8 ball is fun, dice is for suckers.

Music and art style is well done.

I doubt it's going to hold my interest long enough to complete the story.
