Black box mission - Was given target name, but can't find it anywhere in the system

Hello and greetings fellow commanders o7,
I was just about to drop this mission, when I decided to quickly drop a Q in the forum and see what you guys (and gals) think. I've always been able to get my questions answered by doing simple Google searches - up until now, that is! This one has me stumped. (I actually like the fact that a lot of the game is left for us to figure out. It's more like life.) Anyway, I digress:

I am stuck on a black box mission. Here's what I've done so far:
  • went to the proper system (IL Aquarii)
  • scanned the Nav beacon at the main star
  • Honked my discovery scanner

The original mission has been updated to read: TARGET: SEBI (1/4). I've tried looking for something called SEBI in the system, but to no avail. The mission states that I must search signal sources in the system; perhaps I should be searching using a method other than the Nav beacon and the Discovery Scanner?

Thank you, in advance, for any help you can provide.

Well, the update you describe sounds much more like an incoming enemy alert (although they are not that common with black box recovery missions - those usually simply have you ambushed while you are trying to scoop your black boxes). SEBI 1/4 usually indicates the name of an NPC pirate who is going to interdict you, and the 1/4 indicates that they will be the first of four...

So. Do you have any other missions in Il Aquarii, such as a delivery one?

But anyway, the way to find black box locations is as described above. Enter the system and scan the nav beacon. That should update your mission with a specific body in the system, fly to that body and your ship will 'discover' the appropriate mission USS, and when you drop into it you will fnd the black boxes floating around and can scoop them up.

Hello All,
Nope, Sebi's not got me yet. (But he probably will shortly. Either him, or one of his other 3 buddies. Boy, you sure don't make any friends working for Gaia!
OK, I've tried doing it the easy way. Usually the game gives me a planetary body to search. Heck, it actually may have, as I think I was killed the first time I attempted this mission. Anyway, I guess I'll have to find and track down all Unknown Signal Sources in the system. Unfortunately, I think there are 3 stars in that system. This could be a daunting task. I'll spend a few minutes checking signal sources again. If I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere, I can always drop the mission.

As a side note: I hear a lot of people complaining on the Interwebs about all manner of minor issues with ED. But in the end, FDev put together one of the coolest games I've ever played. This game is AMAZING!

I'll post again to let you know how things turned out. Although I'm pretty sure Sebi's going to kill me (again). Thanks for everyone's input.

Check your message inbox, there might be an older one (before the sebi 1/4) telling you the scan result.

If that fails try the FSS, as suggested above. Mission targets give orange arrows instead of white ones, so they stand out.

Don't know if I remember wrong but I believe scanning the nav beacon doesn't always work when you are in a system with multiple stars and the mission doesn't spawn at the main star but close to one of the others.

Use the FSS to find the target... resolve all the Unknown signal sources (at least the lowest ones, though you may need to resolve other planetary signals to find more of the USS signals).

The mission target will come up as an orange signal when your FSS reticle is near it. That'll resolve to the mission target.

If you exhaust all the USS signals and can't find it, it's a bug. This can occasionally happen.

In default HUD colours mission target use will be a very obvious blue in the nav panel. You can find them via the fss, but scanning the nav beacon is faster...

Reiterating the above.

When I take these on I just scan the Nav beacon and jump back into SC. Once supercruising open your Nav panel and scroll down to find your mission target highlighted (in blue if you have the original HUD colours,) depending on the system it may be a long way down the list. Initially it may be a planetary body until you get close enough (1000ls?) for the USS to resolve.

I haven’t personally encountered any bugs with these missions for a while now so hopefully it’s all working as intended.
