ANNOUNCEMENT Gamescom Reveals - Fleet Carrier Details

Unless those jumps are really slow and expensive (think FE2 week-long transits for maximum range and possibly having to scrounge for fuel), 500LY range sounds a bit much; why not just unlimited?

Greetings Commanders,

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread, it is really exciting for us to see the hype around Fleet Carriers.
I know there are a lot of burning questions, and I want to let you know that we are going through these and putting together a response. This might take a bit of time, but we hope to get you some answers by next week.

If you can, take a look at the main discussion forum for other questions as well. Its been a busy day there.....

I think also besides credits required, you should be at least an Vice Admiral to purchase one, like a Federal Corvette.

You can compare NMS space stations with ED space stations, it's not just the color.
Or planets from orbit...
NMS is fun though.

I concur - NMS is a whole lot of fun, different fun. It’s a bit more survival-ly, and I do love a good survival game. Elite is not at all Survival-ly. We’re immortals with bottomless bladders - or we eat, drink, and do our business while logged off, regardless, it’s not part of game-play.

I don’t see survival aspects fitting into Elite either, and that’s ok too. Both games are fun to play, and when they’re not I have 20 other options for my digital entertainment needs.

I fly in a Squadron, we decide to use a carrier. Happy days. What's the problem?

Maybe not problems, but a lot of questions right now… ;)

  • Whose FC the squadron will use?
  • Can squadron use more than 1 FC?
  • Can Squadron members pool CRs for buying the FC?
  • Who can manage the FC?
  • Can the management permissions be tied with the ones set for Squadron, or will need to be painstakingly duplicated?
  • Is anything stopping owner from removing the FC from Squadron use, if members added their CR/time/resources to it?
  • What's the incentive for the squadron members to care about not their own FC at all?

Basically, it's hard to feel about the FC as a common good for a Squadron now, with all these unknowns. It's not about limiting one group or the other – but frankly, as a group, you can't have the same emotions as a solo player about the fleet carrier. You don't feel you earned it, you don't feel it's yours, so of course, from the mechanics standpoint you can utilize similar set of functions, but there are different emotions (or lack of them) as you play. And I assume we all play to feel something. Happy days? I'm not so sure…

I'm looking forward for more details of the implementation, keeping my fingers crossed. :)

Its amazing that the reveal has answered so many questions/prayers. But now EVEN MORE QUESTIONS! I'm too excited to wait for more info but not much I can do about that. Better start saving!

cool... exciting.
I wonder if the carrier will be tagged with your squadron name or tag. you are a member of the a squadron, will your carrier also have great big gorgeous squadron tags on

hehe I hope so

Well I’m not FDev, but I do have some extra common sense, so I’ll try to field some answers here:

1. Whoever’s Carrier they want. See #2
2. If your squadron is larger than 16 members, I’d have to say yes here, if you want more than 16 people to go to the same place at the same time.
3. Going to say “Not directly.”, however it is quite in the realm of possible for squadron members to “donate” funds via cargo “transfers”, buying up large quantities of a commodity, ejecting it for another member, having them sell said commodity to boost that individual’s bank roll. Time consuming for sure, but the closest way we have to “give someone money.” in game.
4. The carrier owner.
5. No
6. Their own integrity.
7. Squadron cohesion.

These like a lot of fun and a great addition. Two questions:

1. How will we interact with the support vessels?
2. Will we have any control over where the fleet carrier exits into a system? For example, will we be able jump to a distant outpost or to a specific body within the target system?

I'll be interested to see how these actually work once we get them. Too many unknowns right now to get overly excited, but at least it's SOMETHING new(ish).

Looks like it's time to focus on making some money again. I feel poor with my 2.5 Bn, somehow don't think that's going to be enough.
I reserve my opinion until such time they are in the game, however the footage doesn't show them during mining or in combat, so I guess they are sort of like your own, personal space station you can move around. Wondering about the gameplay options linked to the carriers now. Which is still neat, though the "custom" option might be reduced to aesthetics. Would be great to see them modular, so you can customise their parameters (say, jump range, fuel consumption, armor, shields) and looks (say, cockpit from the mining one, mid-hull from the mercenary, engines from the exploration one etc.). But again, I'd wait to see how they pan out. Not being able to access the bridge is a bit of a downside and of course would be great to get space legs to just walk around, though they do seem to be a great addition to the game overall. Definitely has a lot of potential as a foundation to build upon.

One worrying thing though is the "special" fuel. Because gathering materials for several hours to do just one jump doesn't sound like much fun to me.

Would be nice if King/Admiral Rank now has a use.
They're only buyable in the Permit Locked Col Sector near Witch Head (which you will need to unlock a permit for).
And IF the new resource you need is on Ice Planets and FDev sneak Ice Planet Landings in (or on Ice Rings for non-Horizon players), that would be a proper bonus and worth waiting so long for.
As for usefulness, who knows?
