Hello all!
I think we could have just gained a little insight in to how spacelegs will come about in future with the release of personal fleet carriers...
It's always been speculated that we would receive a Star Citizen type space legs (walk anywhere, board any ship, steal other ships etc) but I think with the connectivity issues at hand, and the dogged questions like "What happens if I am on my friends ship and he logs off / disconnects?", "If he or she dies where do I spawn?", "If they travel to Colonia how do I get back??"
Well....
In a genius move by FDev it looks like we are getting personal fleet carriers. This is not only a win for the solo players, but a big win for the kind of space legs we may get in future.
Imagine if each fleet carrier had a "common room / interior" when spacelegs arrives. Imagine it as your own base or home. You can grant another player(s) permission to dock on your carrier and then both players can get out of their own personal ships and meet in the "common room". In this space players can meet / socialise / rp / do any other added gameplay. Then when the time comes to do missions each player boards his or her individual ship and goes out into the black and continues the game pretty much as it is now.
Extend this concept further by allowing each station or dock to have a "public common room / interior". Here you can meet new players in public spaces and get that sense of scale and environment everybody wants. Extend this further by allowing players to leave their own ships on planet surfaces and walk around etc. There we effectively have a spacelegs that keeps us connected to our ship to solve all the problems above.
If fleet carriers are persistent that removes the problem of what happens if friends logs off / disconnects. And if the second player leaves their ship on the fleet carrier and ends up 500LY away the next time they log in - it's no biggy because they can board their own ship and make their own way back.
This probably removes the ability to freewalk into everybody's ship and play passenger - but at least I can see now how some spacelegs aspect may be viably implemented.
I guess the multicrew feature will be staying too if you really wanted to sit right next to your friend. Or you could maybe multicrew in after you have both been in the "common room".
Thoughts?
