[Video] Open letter from community to Elite Dangerous

I’d last about 3 minutes as a community manager on here.

Since the September update we all know things got borked, not least of all, the mission boards. I’m out in the black at the moment and have no idea of when I get back if I’ll be able to access mission boards without constant problems.

This has happened across all platforms and has made the game just about unplayable for many, not least the new player. Mission boards give me at least 50% of my gameplay when I’m in a populated system which is about 40% of the time. For many those figures will be far higher.

What did we see on here? A campaign to get the colour of a button changed. I mean, come on. If you’re going to throw your weight around, throw it at something that is game breaking, not just a bit of a distraction.

As a community manager I would have had a few choice words for it, lots of in your face laughing and ended it all by posting my P45.

Ah, i miss Mike Evans posting. He was never afraid of telling people what they could do with their opinions.

But I am the community and I was not asked about it??

you need to set up a channel. or a funny avatar. walk your talk. you don't have to, but others will. so what's your act? just pointing at those who have one makes you look silly.

4) Don't try to blackmail us by community people shutting down their channels (or whatever), community run stuff can be shut down if they want (remember this was tried before about a year ago, FD were not amused).

Except we weren't blackmailing FDEV. We were protesting, and for good reason. Remember there was a threadnaught about it at the time. Don't reopen old wounds please. We (EDCD) are not involved in this latest drama.*

EDIT: *There may be one or two individuals from certain groups in EDCD who have signed that petition, but they're not doing it as part of EDCD.

Pretty sure that's the last posting from Zac we'll see on this thread, then. What were we asking for? Oh, yeah, better communications from FDev.

Not hard to see why the situation is like it is.

People bleat they don't communicate, they immediately communicate and direct people to other communications.

You immediately bleat they don't communicate in direct response to them communicating.

It all seems a wee bit silly to me.

Ummm, i didn't say anyithing about EDCD (who are EDCD?). I'm talking about Zacs comment that some community people have said they will go dark if FD don't give an answer they like, to which Zac effectively said, do as you please, we won't be blackmailed.

I'm a big fan of traditions and I was already worried this year's end of summer/early fall "the community is on fire" Important Community Update might be running late (name not final).

Jokes aside though, seeing how regularly this happens, I don't think it can all be blamed on the community being toxic. I absolutely agree with Zac that the CM team (and all the others) are indeed working very hard, even in their own free time. But it's not always just about how hard you work and I think some processes could definitely be improved.

I don't quite agree with Zac on the communication part, because from a player's perspective it feels like every bit of news we get is a bit too vague.

I don't know...

Having been around for 5+ years it's hard to not feel like ED has been handed off to a "maintenance mode B team" while FD focuses on other things.

Their well established history of just ignoring some things that have been around forever and the slow pace of development combined with the erratic quality make it evident that not unlike many companies - (Microsoft for one) WE are the QA team and any release or patch is for us to test and sort out for them so they can decide what rises to the top for remediation.

This mentality seems to be everywhere these days and only getting more pervasive.

So it goes...
I hold out some small hope that the "A" team is working on expansions... :cautious:

He did mention that mixing giving specifics in advance with change can be very problematic for some people.

The one other observation I would make is that it's pretty obvious the ED is a compilation of spaghetti code that is becoming increasingly incomprehensible to the current development team. This is likely the biggest cause of the recurring borks in updates and patches. Poor design structure and enforced code guidelines and reviews leads to this sort of thing where subsequent teams have no idea of how new code will adversely impact the current code. This was clearly evident in the last update, but it's been an ongoing issue.

In my consulting work, I see teams of highly skilled coders that roll out new product, upgrades, and patches without killing existing product. Obviously - not in the gaming industry. Achieving this level of quality is not only possible, but is demanded in some environments. It can be done if the will, structure, and discipline are a requirement.

This seems to not be required at FD.

Unfortunately - they are not alone

I'm not signing this. The game needs a balance pass but not because of this. You can't fix stupid players.

true but the whole thing is too opinionated anyway. to rally people you need a simple, well shared message.

"why all these bugs?"
"what are you going to do to fix this?"

e.g. asking for a pts is just infantile, i wouldn't sign that either. you ask for quality, not specific tools. so frontier can set up the damn pts and continue not giving an arx about fixing bugs and you gained what, exactly? talking about tools is completely beside the point, which is just about frontier taking responsibility for their crap, simple enough.

That was a reference to the protest where sites went offline yes. Was that organized by EDCD? Who are EDCD? I presume you are a member?

Not sure why i need to apologize for referencing it. If people are now saying they will go dark, then its a similar situation, and referencing FD's reaction to that is pertinent i think.

Regardless (as i've just been informed what EDCD means), i don't know. I don't know who was saying they will go dark this time. Zac referred to "community ran channels". Whether this means EDCD people, or people with youtube channels, i don't know.

Elite is a badass game. I will concede that the last update was horribly mangled and should not have been released like that.

However, I do not like all this chest puffing from the "creators" or "influencers." Admittedly, I do watch their videos and find them enjoyable, but that does not give them power over Fdev. I do not think that anyone is in the position to make demands of Fdev.

Obviously Fdev could do better, but there is no indication that they are not striving to improve. Obviously it would be awesome to know what they are working on for 2020, but knowing will not make it come any faster. I think for the most part, the "community" needs to chill TF out.

No no... we asked for better communication on things like roadmaps and were exactly told that they would be communicating LESS about roadmaps so that they wouldn't have to deal with our disappointment when they miss the deliverable AND so they get more punch out of their marketing of what they plan on delivering.

If you don't have a problem with that then you're really not helping anyone.

StuartGT has kindly told you who we are. I'm surprised you didn't know after all that drama!
