[Video] Open letter from community to Elite Dangerous

Alright for the people defending FDev in this thread- Is the current state of affairs acceptable? Updates break things and patches break even more things.

Yep its absolutely fine, there are always a few minor bugs after a patch. They are also banging out fixes like they are possessed proving FDEV listen and care about the game.

Are the requests of the content creators to have a better, more transparent testing system that unreasonable after all this?

More pointless than unreasonable, past beta's in ED were always just something of a drama magnet between the haves and the have nots and a bit of a gimmick really. People just checked out ships to see if it was worth getting them main game and spent a lot of time complaining progress didn't carry over. Then afterwards have a meltdown because FDEV didn't listen.

I'm sure if FDEV had valued our contribution to them they'd have kept it going.

But... the community who are being vocal in attempting to represent 'the comunity' are still deliberately misrepresenting themselves as the greater community and express their wishes as if vocalised by that greater community - which is a deliberate falsification, surely?

Did you not defeat your own argument in the use of this phrase?
It would only defeat my argument if it was the argument I was making. I've never once claimed to represent or know what the majority think. Now, you can either continue to play strawman with me, or we can have a serious discussion. If the former, I'm quite done.

So, what you're saying is that a company breaking a product after selling it to you is a crime, and ergo Frontier has committed a crime by breaking their product with this patch (and every update before it). Why Stigbob, I never thought you'd cross over to the dark side. Calling Frontier a criminal organization? Wow! Somebody has hacked the Russian Bot!

Thankfully the Duck is unhackable, or I might lecture you about how software is not a product but a service we license instead of own. Wait, what just happened?

See people, THIS is why we need VPNs!!!
It's official, Stuart's account has been hacked, otherwise he would not have liked this post. Unless he is still grateful for the meme you posted, we all know he is obsessed with memes.

Still love you Old Duck! ;)

Nope.

They're making no claim to speak on behalf of everyone. They only claim to speak for the people who agree with them. That is their community.
So by default, as a minority community, representing only their own views, they expect special treatment by Frontier, in preference to the majority who also play the game and would normally be associated as "the community"?

I love the "strawman" deflection.

You had already nullified the discussion yourself, all I am discussing is that a minority is deliberately attempting to manipulate a situation that will affect the majority - there is no 'strawman' there, surely?

No, you still don't seem to understand this...

This is the last attempt I'm going to make to explain it. Whether or not this group represents a minority or majority is irrelevant; we don't know what the silent majority think. They could disagree, but they could also agree (there's no universal law that says a minority of voices can't represent a majority of opinion). So neither you nor myself get to claim to be right by virtue of being in one group or the other. What we can do is consider that the community of people behind the petition is large enough to warrant attention by FDev and it's up to FDev--not you--to decide how they choose to respond/react to the criticism.

Honestly, save your breath. These people are just trolling anyone who isn't happy with the state of the game and voices it. They're not worth the effort to engage and are better off being added to your ignore list. They're happy with the game as is, and good for them, but nothing you can say will change their opinion.

You're playing word games. Hedging context into the nebulous "their community" which can be whatever convenient definition you want.

I started playing this game back in February 2017. I have to say that this is the worst I've felt about the state of the game since I started playing and this is the worst I've seen many in the player base feel. No "influencer" is making me think this way, that's totally how I feel. I am rooting for Frontier and I do not harbour ill-will towards them in any way. But I am not happy with where Elite Dangerous is in October 2019 and it is obvious that many in the player base feel similarly.

Here is hoping 2020 is a better year Frontier. 2019 will be Elite's annus horribilis for me.
That's the 5th worst year in a row! :D

(there's no universal law that says a minority of voices can't represent a majority of opinion)

That's what those words mean. If it's the minority, it is not the majority.

The idea that minority is secretly the majority is the some reality-defying nonsense. One step away from a conspiracy theory.

I'm not trying to change their opinion. That should never be the aim of a discussion. What I'm trying to do is make the conversation more constructive by highlighting the absurdity of ad hominem and the snarky back-biting which is all too common on these boards. The forum warriors, as I call them, are only interested in picking at the people who voice criticism (as you say), but that's not helpful for anyone--including them.

If we could make the discussion constructive, that is, about the issues being discussed instead of fetishizing particular wordage or who belongs to red team or blue team, we'd have both a healthier community and a better game.

I'm not making either of those claims.

I'm reminding you (and Ratkacher) that because the majority of a given population are silent, their opinions are unknown. This means that the minority of voices can (and often do) rerpesent the opinions of those who are not expressing them. This is literally how representative government works.

Alright. That's a perfectly reasonable response. I'd argue that they really should be doing better, but that's getting away from the point, and I really just wanted to see why people were defending FDev in this thread.
