Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

A minor update on the "astrophotography". It seems that the game renders the nebulae once you jump into the system, meaning that you get "the same" image every time you make a screenshot. Maybe logging out to the main menu and back will re-render it. Haven't tried that yet. Still, you can have some pretty awesome views using the camera outside the ship, just hanging there in outer space gazing at whatever nebula you stumble upon.

Speakin of the devil. Does anyone know which of the gazillion quality settings that cranks up nebula detail?

EDIT: It seems that the game actually does re-render nebulosity after a relog. I'll try that once I get to the Crab.

How often is the crazy FSS thing happening for you?
I have it happen but it's rare.
I am hunting High Grade Emissions so use the FSS several times on the same system in a session occasionally some of the target circles seem to move vertically when I try to line up and zoom in which was slightly annoying at first but is just a question of pulling the trigger to zoom in as the target swings across the sight.

It only seems to affect some of the scans and only a couple of targets in the affected scans, is this the bug?

I was doing this for a while, and found it to be really what the FSS was designed to do. It’s actually fun to use for signal hunting, especially with the audio that you get for the different USS types or even when zoomed in on static structures like stations. (For exploration, not so much fun, in my opinion, but that is covered ad nauseum elsewhere 🙃 )

However, once I found that scanning the nav beacon delivered all the signal sources, identified and listed newtly in the nav panel, I gave up with it. It’s quicker to drop out to the beacon, scan, and be on your way again, especially when it identifies HGE drops with a limited life span :)

I think so, target swings off quickly to one side when zoomed in.
Maybe to do with target being obscured or too close to another body. Not sure.
Not a big deal, just irritating.

I made it out to the Crab Pulsar. That's one aggressive looking star. Just jumping towards it gives a feeling of something special coming up:

The nebula is also pretty neat, kinda resembling the real deal:

Inside the nebula you find the pulsar:

The Crab Nebula, also called Messier 1, is a supernova remnant. The supernova itself was observed from Earth in year 1054. Because the remnant is still so "young" it's still rather compact, and if you observe it over a couple of years, you'll see that it is still expanding very quickly.

Notice the strange bubbly phenomena at the center of the nebula. That is the gas inside being pushed away by the "solar" winds from the neutron star:

One crazy star! And you can take your spaceship and go see it in ED. How cool is that? :)

Interesting...
When it happens to me, I have to close it and reposition the ship.
Zooming out/in doesn't stop it.
I'll have a play about with it later.
My theory is that it happens when you try to move too far from your initial zoom location while zoomed in. For me you need to zoom back out as far as you can to stop it. I believe zooming into another multi stage zoom also stops it. I thought this was a feature where you start to "drift" if you move to far from the FSS original zoom an to use ship thrusters rather than FSS motors to turn something...

I just wanted to say I love reading your updates about astronomy and exploring and awe for the views. How do you get a good view of a nebula? Do you want to be in a system close but some distance away?

For your multiple picture, how does it work if you jump to an adjecent system, is that too far for corrections?

Thanks :)

It seems that to do multiple "exposures" you have to exit to main menu and jump back into the game. That causes the software to re-render the nebula. If you just take high res screenshots they will all have the same "noise" in them. That makes the proces of taking 50-100 frames time consuming.

You need to be roughly at the same position in a nearby system to capture the full nebula. Or you can image details from inside the nebula. It seems that the amount of detail is limited when the nebula is distant.

To get a good image, go away from the main star of the system you're in. That makes everything darker and the nebulae will become more distinct. Then use the camera suite (the drone) to go outside the ship, and frame the picture. I'm on a PC and there you press ALT+F10, to capture a high res screenshot. After taking the screenshot you can use an image editing software like Photoshop or Gimp to change the brightness of the nebula. The function you want is called "gamma". A gamma correction "only" change the midtones of the image, and keeps black and white where they were.

Now just wait a xxx minute...

Thinking over that image for a while - what again is the scale of that? Are those waves superluminal, or is this an artefact of the imaging (subsampling)?

The images were taken at X-ray wavelengths using the Chandra telescope. The inner ring around the star is roughly 1 ly in diameter.

I went mining in the Cutter for a bit. No pirates ever appeared. They usually do spawn in right after I enter a ring. But not today. Until I left to sell.

First jump, some Elite Mamba interdicts me right at the star, while my FSD is charging. My Cutter is loaded down, and it soon became clear that I was not going to win the interdiction.

So I submitted and deployed my weapons, turning to face him. Well. I tried to turn to face him. He was much faster than I, of course, and getting him in front of me proved to be quite a problem. My turrets tickled him a bit while I attempted to skew the nose of my plump Cutter toward him. He was shooting something at me, but my shields were holding. I was like, "Hold still, dammit!"

Then the police arrived. With that for a distraction, the Mamba finally allowed me to get him into my sights. And I got a bit of extra pocket change from his untimely death. Hey, he shoulda let me go by.

I went on with my journey to sell my load of Painite and I was interdicted again at the next system! This time my FSD was not charging and I was able to evade the interdiction. Hmpf. Amateurs everywhere.

I arrived safely at my destination in the end. But I did not get any screenshots of mining, or combat, or anything.

So, here's a picture of my Mamba. Just cuz it's so cool looking and everything. :p

Well, I have a confession to make...I cheated this weekend.

NOTE: Some info is grayed out just in case you haven't played D2 and are super-excited to get it and don't want to know anything about it...you have been warned.

Okay, in my defense, the Destiny 2 download from Steam was Free...And I have played the original, and while I didn't finish the original game, going into it and heading to the Cosmodrome or Mars to start thumping bad guys is a relaxing way to de-stress. So I figured, "what the heck, the game is free, give it a try."

After just over an hour of download time, I log into the game...to find that I have to relive the "awakening" mission that goes on in Destiny. Hmmm...figured that they would have created a new starting mission, but I guess if you already have one, you use it and save time/development/coding/money...So I get to the ship, and the Ghost takes me to the new tower.

I get there and wonder, "Why does everything look so complicated now?" In the original, things were fairly straight-forward. In one area you had your armorer/weapons people, in another area, you had your character type people who you could get specific upgrades for your character type (Hunter, Titan, Warlock). So far in Destiny 2, I have found the Titan and Warlock people, but have yet to find the Hunter one (unless he is the dude that is in the Earth Dead Zone). If it is that guy, it makes no sense that you would have to go find him Off-Site so to speak.

Secondly, Why the heck did they change up the maps and such? They made sense before, now there is so much additional junk on the screen that it kind of makes it a pain to try to go to a mission area.

So anyway, I start playing and about 15 minutes into the game (at the EDZ patrol areas) the Server drops...Or at least the connection to the server. Anyway, the game does the run around like a chicken with it's head cut off and then dumps me back into orbit. Now when it was trying to "find the server" the game of course stops. But when it dropped me into orbit, the server was back again. Just odd...So I go back into the game, wait through the 45 second to 1 minute load screens of the ship in sub-orbital flight, and then back to the tower.

Head back out to the wilds...shoot stuff for a while...server drops. Repeat again. The third time I was able to play for over an hour before the "Connection to the server has failed, please check your internet connection"...Which is Destiny speak for "Oh Snap, the server went down again, but we are going to make it seem like you are the problem."

I tried it again, but after the server dropped again, I finally gave up...I might try to play it again...But I know that I won't put nearly the hours into it as I did the original...It is a decent distraction, but it will never replace ED.

Anyway, that was what I was doing over the weekend...

Somewhat disappointed to discover that scanning one of the un-credited planets in the Colonia system did not put my name on it :( I mean it did seem unlikely, but I'm pretty sure I did find a planet at th edge of the bubble and get my name on it earlier this year x)

Was it a glitch that some of them were scanned and tagged?

There is a bug at the moment which doesn't display first mapped / scanned tags, even though they do actually exist. So maybe next week after they've rolled out the third bug patch, you might be rewarded properly :) I hope so - I understand the thrill of getting a tag on a "known" system!

Happened to me too. Post #4551 on the previous page.

I've just finished a Maia massacre mission for 6M in My Cobra, Got another M to cash in combat bounds. Next up I will outfit my cobra for deep core mining (my first try at mining). My intention is for the proceeds to go to a Vulture for combat purposes, and keep the cobra either for mining or discovery and start the engineering of the Vulture.
