The Star Citizen Thread V10

Back long ago, I flipped a coin deciding to back SC or ED Kickstarter - ED won and I then had to use up every favour, foot rub, shopping run and general grovelling to justify spending 200 quid. I just managed to swing it.
Man, imagine if you'd gone with CIG instead. Are there enough footrubs in the universe?

My gut feeling s42 won't launch in 2020 BUT I reckon come the end of 2020 we will see a big worldwide marketing push with proper trailers for the game ready for release sometime in 2021 .

Despite all the money whales have put into the game afaik star citizen has not been advertised much in normal channels yet so there could still be ab untapped market there.

I may be talking out of my exhaust however ;)

Worldwide marketing push is incredibly expensive if we can take any of the other international well-selling games for examples. I doubt CIG will have any financial muscle left to start such an offensive. And I dont even think this is one of their corners. Their main concern will be to fullfill enough promises regardless how shoddy or rudimentary in order to NOT get sued into oblivion. As was mentioned before I m pretty sure with the marketing coverage SC received in the first few years and after the years its already running everybody who is interested is already involved or has made up his mind. I dont believe CIG can tap into "new blood" on a scale that would make SC a hit on the market.

Add the fact that regardless where you go you can immediately tap into a crowd of opposing opinions so extreme that most "sane" people will probably stay away. I mean sure, if the gaming sites give SQ42 great reviews then it ll probably sell well but I dont really see that happening without SC pulling a 180 and surprising everybody with quality and content.

But a 2020 no-show seems to be generally accepted already with next to no backlash for CIG so for Chris Roberts and his cronies this means another year in a snuggly cushion of money. I m sure 2020 will be "the" year where everything finally comes together. I m torn between my sense of justice which wants to see Chris Roberts get what he deserves and my sense of entertainment which is ecstatic at the preview of another full year of lulz and hilarity.

Strangely...the RSI website is down and the game launcher won't fire up...anyone else that plays have this issue?

I can't log in to either the website or launcher...very sinister ;)

Mole buddy, you KNOW we have older folks in here. Cant drop such a bombshell without ample warning and heart medication nearby ^^

I see a problem if they go for mass marketing appeal with a big push. The hoi poloi will come in and start demanding completely unreasonable things like faster travel times, instant respawn, quicker credits, etc.

If CIG don't capitultate, then they will get review bombed. If they do, they will allow the whales.

They might be best sticking to their core fans and milking them for all they are worth.

If that really is the only option then I just hope those whales are happy to keep getting milked!

That said by having S42 and SC separate maybe the short term fun players can get their kicks with S42 and SC will remain the long burner.
Hey I can but hope ;)

(Whether I bother with it at all without VR however I am not confident

I wouldn't mind playing SQ42 on VR . . . but only then, and only if it's worth it (decent story, not too many glaring bugs, enough missions...)

BTW, your son is growing like a weed. I remember your avatar when he was tiny. :)

I'm still meeting a regular slew of new bloods every night...all light on their wallets after joining the funny farm... so it's still appealing to newer backers for some reason.

I'd guess either because they know what they are getting into and are fine with that or they got sucked in by the marketing.

Its the latter people who will be the problem, as they are ripe to become skeptics, who will generate more criticism.

CIG are in a tricky place. If they don't hype the game, they won't get the money, but the more they hype, the more they mismanage expectations.

Its a good thing that CIG managed to somewhat stabilize server performance so that people can at least give it a shot if they so chose. Depending on who you listen to bugs and crashes are still very much a thing or non-existent (one of these is bound to be wrong so the answer is probably somewhere in the middle) but hey its alpha...still the biggest excuse coming up front and when I read player reports it tells a story about hardened people who expect things to go wrong and dont consider a couple crashes per evening any kind of problem. So yeah....I dont think anybody who gets into the game at this time does NOT know its an alpha which helps with acceptance. Jittery movement, glitches, all kinds of bugs....all expected and again accepted due to the state of the game.

This also matches various comments I read in other places only that most of those have one thing in common. People report that there is very little to do and I guess thats also a fact we dont need to argue. So even tho new people come in whats more important would be how many of them stick and remain in the pool providing more money. Not everybody has the patience of our Mole, laid back and relaxed. If anything the "old" backers have had enough time by now to get used to the progress rate, the state of the game and the questionable decisions CIG makes. New people coming in will only re-ignote the drama wheels of old...you know...when some entitled and impatient people dared to speak up and ask about release and "why" some things still are not in the game. I am not sure the old trench wars will errupt again because the same people reporting that "there is nothing there" to do also gave up on it already. And whoever starts to ask questions today will meet experienced defenders who know how to handle all kinds of criticism.

So Mole....while you keep meeting new people...do you have the impression that servers are filling up? Is there even data to determine if the actual active playerbase increases? (like number of servers or something?) Are the newcomers sticking around or is it mostly drive-bys from curious people trying to figure out what this has to offer? Because please forgive me but from what you share I rather have the impression that Star Citizen is a "routine" for you, allowing you to enjoy yourself for a couple hours but not really in a way that other games would (speaking of engaging gameplay or challenges).

I think the per-server limit is still quite low anyway (was it 50 ?) so it's kinda difficult to determine from our end..

Yap knew that, I m just not sure how server selection happens. Do you get auto-assigned to a server when you log in? Do you chose one from a list of servers with a per-server-load value? How do you trigger a "fresh" server?

I noticed the trade routes are empty, so I monopolize on that and I’ve only been trading thus far. It’s nice to be one day 2 of the series and already have 250K in the Bank. I might do another session of trading tonight, but, I noticed traders getting on to the servers. The signs are: higher prices to buy, lower price to sell. And inventory is low.

In the 600i, I’m making 23,500 - 24,000 per trade run with Laranite (spelling). While she is not the best trader, by far, she does provide enough credits to run her and outfit her the way I want.

But tonight’s session, I might get into above ground mining, I heard people talking about it and some people are pulling 20 - 40K per trip out. It costs about 6K to get into the mining game, so one good run will pay for itself.

Things I’m trying to avoid for now, Bounty Hunting, FPS, and PVP. As I want to experience other things in the game for now. But, with mission sharing now a thing, I’m not sure how long I will be able to stay away from that!

You can decide between best, America, and Europe I believe. I usually just do best. Unless my friends from Europe are on and I want to join them.

I'd honestly say that the majority of the newer backers I meet are the casual, gone tomorrow types...with a few exceptions. They come in asking all sorts of basic questions "What key do I press to take off?"..."Where do I find a mining tool?". All the questions easily answered by a quick peek at the patch notes conveniently right in front of them in the launcher. They're not in this for the long haul.

They're also not boosting the server numbers in the long term since a lot of regular, long term or dare I say...permanent backers only appear for a few days/weeks when there's a new ship/new patch then go back off to type stuff on reddit. I see quite a few regular names I recognise on the EU servers on a nightly basis, a lot of French guys, Spanish, Italians, more than a few Germans, a lot fewer from the UK...folks like me who are chilled about playing SC, are aware of it's many shortcomings and controversies but enjoy the experience all the same. The regular Spanish and German guys know I have a little of both languages so they always pass the time of day and normally ask me to join in their activities.

3.7 has been a busy patch with the new interdiction mechanic exciting the trolls...the spelunkers with the caving and the alien sympathisers with the Banu defender...not to mention the buggy ship rentals...but, we're back to persistent server drop outs and regular as clockwork game crashes as Ci¬G's creaky servers struggle to deal with the number of connections. It'll tail off back to normal levels in a week or so, maybe faster if they don't get a grip on the persistent and irritating 30K server disconnection errors.

Yep, it has bugs aplenty...some old, revamped and returning for this patch after being fixed in the PTU...some new. Same old problems...same old Star Citizen.

As for me, I don't just log in as a matter of routine...I actually enjoy doing what I can do minus the bugs. It's not that difficult...since beneath all the glaring issues that SC has, there's actually some good stuff in there.

I'll add that the server selection done from the main menu offers EU/US/AUS and BEST...I don't have any lag issues jumping onto the AUS/Asian server where all the southern hempishere guys hang out...which is strange. No particular latency issues any more than on EU or Best to be honest plus the EU servers tend to fill up with the overflow from the US servers as the time zones light up even though they suggest they've selected the US option...so I suspect that you just get dumped on a random server with spaces in it (barring joining friends etc) and the 'choice' isn't quite as it seems....It's Ci¬G after all ;)

Possible reasons why new players (who may not have yet played ED) are now on-boarding with SC:

Casual players like CobraTV (a former NMS fan boy) who initially backed SC in 2015 with the minimum $45 buy in. But then decided to take a back seat and watch the game development. Recently returned to SC and currently happy with the increased stability of the 3.7 update despite the bugs and unreliable server performance.

Other reasons:

1. PYRO confirmed for CitizenCon via leak

2. Similar to CobraTV, there are new and returning players having positive n00b experiences at the min $45 buy in. Cobra went from cautiously optimistic on Sept 21 with his starter ship:

to dedicated SC fan boy backer by Sept 24 with a 300i:

to over zealous disciple backer by Oct 8:

Guy has several videos on his channel which pose a very rationale argument encouraging new players to try the game. Like this one:

So it's not hard to see why new players would be seduced into the $45 buy in. Especially since it seems the latest patch significantly stabilized the game play. He also didn't appear to experience any lag or server disconnects while playing (unless he heavily edited the video). Or have any issues while QT to moons, while landing etc. Also seems he was lucky enough not to be attacked by other players while streaming that recent video. But even if this had happened, he seemed the type of player who wouldn't be affected by it. Interesting to see how players like him are affected by potential PvP interdiction with the Mantis. Especially since that ship is on the significantly affordable end.

Especially since that ship is on the significantly affordable end.

Standard reminder that $135 is a very strange definition of 'affordable' for an in-game vehicle.

That Cobra guy has clearly hitched his wagon to SC and decided to hard sell in the process, sure. And maybe some of his 40k followers have dipped in as a result, sure again. May the capricious gods of gaming have pity on his soul ;)

I doubt the Pyro stuff has had a particular effect on noob arrivals. Nobody outside of SC circles would even know about it.
