For a low end miner, the Keelback works pretty well, and it's cheap. Here's a possible build:I'm away from the game for a few days, but thinking about ships and mining. I know I want my next combat ship to be a Vulture (from Cobra) but not sure yet about non combat ship. Assuming I can manage to get to grips with core mining I intend to do some more and get a better ship for it. I've been having my eyes on both kraits and also.. The chieftain... Now hear me out, I know I can only get 64 slots in a mining setup, but there are several appealing things about it: Good and many hardpoint placements, seems quite tanky, heard it's agile, and it looks cool. I usually don't get much more than 2 hours for a session, so I'm not sure that the cargo size is actually a problem. How does the kraits compare with agility, ability to fight of pirates, cargo, and view from cockpit? I think especially the phantom look great visually of the two.
Thanks. I think Fdev has either modified the exclusion zones, or maybe it's a bug, but you can get really close to some objects now. There is so much gravitational lensing, that I'm totally surrounded by it. The Asp handles like a charm, with heat steady @ 51%.
Edit: The lensing makes all sorts of psychedelic effects. It's freakin' beautiful, just hanging outside the ship turning my head and seeing all this. I love ED!

Edit 2nd: Here's one final one, showing at least the whole Milky Way, but since the distortion seems to be 360 deg, it's also a picture of the whole Observable Universe seen through a black hole. That's kind of crazy(High res image. Click to zoom)

So good, with all this astronomy perhaps you should add a monocle to your avatar.
The Chieftain is great fun to fly and would probably work as a low capacity miner, it is one of my combat ships none of which is a Vulture I just never got on with that ship.I'm away from the game for a few days, but thinking about ships and mining. I was half expecting a clip from his days as the GamesMaster, had quite forgotten he had perfect pitch and played xylophone.

I've also used my Krait MKII for core mining, and it's excellent. I bring along a fighter and enough weapons to kill off any pirates that might attempt to bother me.
My build for that is something like this:
I've never had a Chieftain.
For me, 64 tons of cargo is enough for Core mining. It takes me a couple hours to do that much, and after that I'm ready to quit anyway. It's fun once you get the hang of it.
Got me thinking. I like the DBX because it's so tiny, and as an explorer it's like a small jetpack. You don't get the same experiences and memories when traveling first class and staying at five star hotels.and the operational range without a scoop.
Oh, yes, on the Krait I had a 2A refinery in the 2 slot, and the DSS was in the 1 slot. Sorry bout thatI think you forgot the refinery! Which slot would you replace?
Also, is anyone else having problems with the coriolis link shortening?
ACE,
I tried them all, to me it's all cosmetics, ended up with a Python. 150 Mn credits on a single run of about 2 hours, no core mining, was convincing enough for me personally. I'd suggest to opt for 5A collector limpets, fire three at a time helps and they go and go and go.... and go.
Phantom or ASPx would be my explorer choice, I have both, run mostly in the ASPx. The MKII, well, always that hassle with hired staff, thanks but no thanks.
The chief, I never liked, it looks like a skate and behaves like one.
All a matter of choice, but filling up way more than 64 cargo should be no problem within two hours and enough limpets...

And yeah, the link shortener is currently borked.
Your Chieftain build looks fine. Let us know if you build it, and how it performs!
I see you found the abrevation of my name!
The slippery slopeReally not liking the bog standard AspX paintjob.
Time to visit the store I think!
Njiri Rescue Logistics 'Recce' DBX.Got me thinking. I like the DBX because it's so tiny, and as an explorer it's like a small jetpack. You don't get the same experiences and memories when traveling first class and staying at five star hotels.
The only problem I have with the DBX is the fuel scoop. I normally scoop with the hammer down, "try" to keep heat under 99% charging the FSD immediately after cooldown and leave the system again after roughly 55 seconds. I've not been able to do that in a DBX, but the last time I tried, I was carrying a max size fuel tank. If however, you halfed the fuel tank, it would jump further. Then you just need a bigger scoop, which you can't, but you might be able to lower the amount of fuel you need to scoop by lowering the jump range. Hmm...
Coriolis is down, and I'm still out in the black, but it might be worth a try when I get back home.
I'm still out in the black trying to find a way home, around Orion, but when I get back some day, I'll try to build this one:Njiri Rescue Logistics 'Recce' DBX.
Dropping the AX gubbins adds a few light years.
Tried minimum tank size... found it a bit too risky.
