Carrier refuelling?

Probably because it's unlikely that the Carrier will be able to be p4iloted in the same way that our ships are.
Piloting has nothing to do with it.
Navigation in Elite is by jumping to a star correct.
So if the carriers follow that basic navigation rule then the carrier will be close to the primary star on entry.
Seems logical for the carrier to scoop it's on fuel from that position, like you said they can't be piloted.

So how do you refuel +500ly out from the bubble?
They said that it would both be purchasable and minable.

Commodities like Gallite or Silver are currently both, for example.

So you could within the bubble buy the fuel and move around easily, whereas outside the bubble you have to mine it, which will be much slower, or alternatively fly out the fuel from a relatively nearby station.

I have to assume that if you have a fleet carrier and you have friends parked on it, there will be a CG every week to fill the gas tank. :)

From what fdev have said in their teasers it feels like FC fuel will be a commodity you can purchase, mine, steal or scavenge that will take up cargo space, so ships on board the FC won't be able to store it as per current cargo rules. Guess fuel rats can just bring it and jettison the cannisters for a cmdr to pick up and transfer to their FC.

My guess is the fuel rats will have an ethical dilemma with FCs. Too lazy to fuel your own FC? Just call the rats every 3 jumps.

It'll be interesting to see what the Fuel Rats' policy will be on Carriers.

I expect that a group of players may form to assist Carrier refuelling though regardless - Carrier Pigeons might be a name for such a group.... :)

I suppose it's possible that the mineable commodity will be one of the ingredients of Carrier fuel, with hydrogen being the main ingredient? Scooping hydrogen in a dedicated refuelling ship with an 8A fuelscoop would be a lot quicker than mining, so that could be used to keep the mining requirement manageable.

It would also give players a choice of what to stock up with. Carrier fuel for short trips, and for longer trips you'd go further by stocking up on the commodity and scooping the hydrogen to synthesise the fuel.

True, and then there are the incurred costs of this new material to be considered...
Fuel Rats: Hi - what's your emergency
CMDR: My carrier is out of fuel
FR: OK where?
CMDR: Beagle Point
FR: Hmmm... OK - do you not have a mining ship on board?
CMDR: Nope
FR: How the hell did you get to Beagle?
CMDR: By calling you guys every day for the last 3 months.
FR: ...
CMDR: Hello, anyone there?

I assume anybody rescuing a Carrier would need to show up in a Carrier of their own.
It's likely that a Carrier might be stuck somewhere beyond the jump-range of a regular ship or, even if it isn't, you're probably not going to want to travel to the Carrier in an Annie hauling (possibly) hundreds of tonnes of Carrier fuel.
I guess, at best, the fuel rats would have to build superlight mining ships, arrive at a Carrier and then mine fuel for it.

Anyway, point being that I assume a rescuer could simply land on the adrift Carrier with a cargo hold full of fuel and transfer it into the Carrier's fuel tank.

Gotta say, if the method for mining Carrier fuel is at all convoluted, I can see the forums being filled with the wails of stranded Carrier owners.
I mean, on the most basic level, if a Carrier doesn't provide the ability to resupply limpets, that's going to make maintaining one a nightmare.

They've said refuel, repair, and restock will be on the standard feature list for a carrier, so limpets shouldn't be a problem.

Certainly taking a carrier a long way away from the bubble is going to be a relatively slow process, but that's probably intentional. It shouldn't take people too long to realise they don't want to do that and turn around.

Actually getting stranded - as opposed to "I don't want to use the various options available" is going to take several jumps.

Well, yes. Although limpet synth ingredients are fairly common while laser mining, my mining cutter usually has a hold full of them. Maybe that'll be the grind: either synthing limpets 4 at a time or manually scooping chunks?
[EDIT: but, yes - as ID states above, these should be included...]

Carriers will likely involve some changes to FR SOP. We'll have to wait and see what's required, but maybe a carrier-based rat's nest?

I don't think that anything can prevent the saltstorm of stranded carrier pilots. :)

You'll likely have to synthesise a refuel from a dozen each of Selenium, Pharmaceutical Isolators and Modified Embedded Firmware. Pattern Epsilon Obelisk Data and Thargoid Organic Circuitry are only necessary to change course.

My guess would be collecting material from different Gas planets. Like you do with Stars.
That's a good suggestion.

FD release Fleet Carriers ! \o/ \o/ \o/ ..... everyone rejoices.

Refueling by scooping gas giants ...... coming 'soon' in 2020 😯
