The experienced keyboard warriors also changed from absolute claims to objective judgements (...well I have fun) because absolute claims of superiority were listened to, investigated and denied/refuted.

Indeed, quite nicely put (presume you meant “subjective judgements” there).

Yep. I think you just broke any record I could've accomplished in a wet dream to date on this forum.:ROFLMAO: You may have just created your own category for best forum dissertation in the Guinness Book of Records in fact. :p

Articulately stated. Especially on what you said here:

....And SC looks beautiful...no doubt, I accept that. Of course in 2019 its not as superior as it was back in 2012 or 2016 but it still looks nice.....

This makes me wonder if SC still had its dated 2012-2014 graphics, would fan boys like CobraTV be so hyper zealous in overlooking SC's functional/performance flaws? It's almost as though the HD graphics is the main selling point SC has left in attracting new fan boys to the franchise.

In my unmatched and great wisdom, SC releasing is a pretty remote possibility now. Their own financial report is now showing they would've run out of money without the investment and loan (and maybe that admission is the first step in laying the groundwork to prepare the backers for failure). We all know how much money they've chewed up and we all know how slow their development is (their roundabouts roadmaps are all too clear). I don't think they can put something releasable before they run out of bank.

But they did get the investment. And it lines the way for years more dev. Improbable as it all seems, they look set to rumble on.

Loads of stuff could still throw a spanner in the works (the legal case forcing major reworks, backer investment slowing significantly, continued Chris influence...). And there's no way they can fulfil all of their macro-purchase promises by a launch point (IE the USP gameplay functionalities for the pre-sold ships, given how many languish already, and how often they keep selling new unfulfilled ones). Or all of their key pillars for that matter (1k+ player shard, 100+ systems with unique exploration content, poly counts that are 10x the industry standard, 9:1 NPC ratios leading daily lives etc). But that last bit was always a given ;)

But they could still launch something, for sure. God knows what it'll be though. Beyond being P2W most likely ;)

@MTBFritz its great to see you back posting in your lengthy style, your recent posts had been quite terse.

SC for me is in that utopian unreleased position where nothing is final and everything is possible, in a nirvana where dreams can supercede reality and death means nothing. Its a world where simply walking around and meeting people is a fun experience. There is no proper persistence, bugs that act like the snakes in the popular game, so everyone knows they have nothing to lose. It's never been reviewed, so it never sits on its merits, but on the dreams of utopian nirvana.

Procedural Generation is a wonderful buzz word, most people have no clue what it really means, but it sounds good. The seed has been planted that this magical tool of PG in SC world creates the planet and then the artists make some small adjustments and hey presto the planet full of life appears. Thus there is nothing stopping this tool being used to quickly build new systems. The dream is fuelled; at some point, maybe tomorrow, but then its been tomorrow for years and we all know tomorrow never comes, the switch will be flicked and the SC universe will be our dreams. Dreamer and realist are separated by the amount of PG they think is present.

What remains true is that SC is beautiful, utopian nirvana where one can dream of the space game we all imagine in our heads can be a reality and that is a powerful thing for space loving gamers who have dreamed for more years than most of can care to remember.

If you look at AAA graphics and fidelity is the main selling point now. Gameplay comes mostly second. Which isn't really surprising because the fidelity gobbles up so much of the dev time and budget.

👋

Just felt like sharing my experience of SC last night.

So for the first time in forever 🎶 I was able to play Star Citizen at a solid 70fps on high with no rubberbanding or anything that impacted my experience. The last version I played was a while back and was a truly sucky experience. This latest round of updates has done amazing work IMHO.

Now, on to my experience ...

I have the gorgeous 300i from Origin Jumpworks.

I wake up at Port Olisar, as one does, and proceeded to pick up and examine everything in reach. I even drank up from an empty cup.
Once I'd satisfied my curiosity, I began browsing the mobiGlas. I found this to be a really innovative way to keep the general HUD nice and clear.

I left my room, and proceeded to the main hall where I ordered my ship, made a note of the landing pad and made my way to it.
I got lost. Briefly.

I took a tour of the 300i, gasping and smiling at the luxurious interior and glass ceiling above.

Climbing into the pilots seat, I looked around the console noting all the different toggles and switches. Marveling at the detail that was put into this ship (and obviously all the others). I found how to start my ship, turn the engine on and after about 20 minutes of pushing my W and D over and over to try to get the ship to fly, I figured out the spacebar and off I launched.

Traveling a fair distance from Port Olisar, my weapons were unlocked and I proceeded to open fire on the gas giant below me.
Following the on screen instructions, I pressed F2 and began navigating around the system on my mobiGlas. I found where I wanted to go, plotted a route and prepared to set off.

Unfortunately, Grief McGriefFace chose that moment to kamikaze into my ship.

I'm standing inside the outfit shop. Looking at the suits, minding my business.
Over comms I hear "..h-h-help .. me"
Confused, I turn around and HOLY JESUS there's a payer standing there, his eyes are hanging from their sockets, his skull is partially visible ... I'm freaking out a little, what the hell is this?
I stupidly ask the inside-out player: "Are you okay man?"
He replies: "OKAY?! DO I LOOK BLOODY OKAY?!"
He runs from the room screaming.

Welcome to Star Citizen I guess.

Poor AF, unable to buy anything and slightly traumatized from Inside-Out Guy, I leave the store and head to my ship.

I arrive at my ship, only this time I am much more prepared. I plot my route prior to leave dock, I launch, face the right direction and hurry the crap away from the station before someone decides he wants our ships to be conjoined twins again.

I focus on ArcCorp and I Quantum Travel to my location. The experience is nice. Quite a bit different from Supercruise. I like it.
Then comes the most epic moment of my entire 20+ year gaming experience... hurtling through space towards ArcCorp.. I stand up from my chair and walk around the cabin.

I am losing my mind.. this is the sort of thing I have been waiting for for decades. The release of this game can't come sooner IMHO.

I walk around the cabin, half tempted to use the door and jump into the vacuum of space, I instead decide to use the loo.. which is directly opposite the door.
After pretending to relieve myself in said loo, I stand up and shut door. Apparently, I do not flush.

I walk to the back of the ship, I look at what I can assume will be a cupboard with a weapons rack (hopefully with some customisation in the future). To my right is a kitchen counter, with a fridge and some water.

To my left, a bed! I hit the bed and it slides out slightly from the wall (I don't know why). I climb onto it and it slides back against the wall (still don't know why). In front of me is a screen detailing a bunch of ship information I don't understand, above me ... space is hurtling past. The beautiful quantum tunneling effect is quite remarkable.

I'm browsing my mobiGlas. I still have about 40m km to go, and my calculated estimates put it at around a 20min flight. Oddly, I'm okay with this. I'm having an absolute blast role-playing.

"Warning, engines overheating" - the soft female voice of my onboard computer tells me. In a slight panic, I get off the bed (bed out..bed in), and head to the cockpit.

Unsure where anything is (I can't see any indicator that I am overheating), I decide to exit Quantum travel. The ship spools down and drops me into normal space.

I potter around the deep emptiness a bit. I contemplate opening the airlock but decide against it. I give it a few minutes, then jump back into the cockpit and jump back to Quantum on my way to ArcCorp.

An uneventful 10 minutes pass (honestly, I was perfectly okay with this.. it was immersive, it felt real).
Suddenly sirens blare and I do an emergency stop in front of a small ice asteroid field.
It seems, in Star Citizen, you need to plot your course smartly (ie: avoid ).

In front of me however, appearing over the asteroids, are three red triangles.
I want to say Idris? Maybe a Polaris? I'm not sure though, I can't yet identify by looks. Whatever they were, there were three of them and they were arseholes. They just started opening fire on me. I tried my best, but couldn't hurt their shields.

So I legged it as fast as I could.

Some time later I arrived at ArcCorp and what an experience that was. Holy. Mother. Of. Moly.
Flying around, looking at the buildings. I noticed however that gravity worked quite well here and I was slowly being pulled to the ground.
Adding some more power, I flew around a bit more.
I headed for Area 18, and after a few minutes trying to figure out how to get permission to dock I was given rights and a location.
Awesome.

Off I trundled to my docking pad. But this is not Elite Dangerous. My landing pad was not directly below so I could not land on it vertically. I had to fly into my landing dock.
My biggest problem here is that I did not know how to use vertical thrust.
Approaching the dock a little too fast, nose up, I tried the only logical thing a guy in my situation would do.. I accelerated.
But, again, this isn't Elite Dangerous.

I guess I'm more interested in how people who have done the travel 20 times feel about it. I'm sure that on a first time, or if you have nothing else to do, then it's fun enough. But if you need to be somewhere I don't see how it will be that much fun wandering around. Kinda like in ED when occasionally I'll notice a nice eclipse, but most times I'm gunning for hyperspace and miss it 🤷‍♀️

Kinda interesting that the main 'and then I died' seemed to be due to players rather than random doors, so that looks promising.
