ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update (22/10)

Huzzah! Finally! This is a smart move, Frontier! One I have wanted to see made for quite some time now!

Don't misunderstand, Frontier. I appreciate all the nifty toys you have added to the game over the years - your efforts are not unappreciated - but the game is now at a point where fresh content is less important than polishing/bug-fixing the ailing existing content. I fully support this announcement! The return of public betas is also welcome news! Again, right move!

Take the next few updates and polish/bug-fix the existing game. That is what this community has wanted for so very long. Elite: Dangerous is a great game as is. It just needs some TLC to make it shine like it should by this point in its development. And you guys are now taking the necessary first steps. 👏

PS: While I am a bit disappointed to see fleet carriers delayed yet again, I would much rather have the game bug-fixed and polished properly than have yet more new content bolted onto a rickity base. So no grief from me concerning that decision, especially if it means carriers will get better integrated into the game. (y)
PPS: Does this finally mean that the days are numbered for the Viper Mk IV's landing gear clipping the cockpit? Please say yes. It is small things like this that serve to detract from the overall experience. I hope the next few rounds of bug-fixing address issues as small as this, as well as bigger issues such as balancing and maybe even Powerplay improvements. Go for the goal!

Community: There's been no new content for existing players for ages baaaawwww

FD: But we told you about that and you were oka-

Community: BAAAAAAWWWWWW

FD: Okay! Here's the new content you existing players have been waiting for

Community: WHAT!? How dare you give us new content when there are bugs in the game! Why don't you ever fix the BUUUUUUUGGGGSSSS!!?

FD: We do! We fix hundreds with every pat-

Community: NOT FAST ENOUGH! NO NEW CONTENT UNTIL THE BUGS ARE FIXED!

FD: Okay! We'll stop everything we're doing right now and fix the bugs first. But it means the new content needs to be delayed again.

Community: WHAT!? YOU NEVER GIVE US NEW CONTENT! NEW CONNNTTEEENNTTT NOW!

FD: But we can't do both!

Community: We want a whole year of bug fixes, and a whole year of new content. ALL IN THE SAME YEAR! BAAAWWWWWWWW

Most companies do both. Unless "New Era" is a total rewrite of the game many of the biggest bugs can't be fixed. The issues with multi-crew, instances, lost deliveries, etc. stem from the distributed peer-to-peer system that the game is built on. FDev is not doing testing on the things that they are shipping now. They moved 75% or more of their effort on to a new update that is over a year away. The vast majority of the company is focused on other titles entirely. They have CHOSEN to not fix bugs and develop content at the same time.

This had nothing to do with them listening to their players. That is a convenient excuse to cover for very poor management. They have not left enough of a dev staff to keep the existing game running. Carriers have not been in development for 6 months or they are lying to us now. They chose to leave a skeleton staff working on the existing game. They did not dedicate proper test resources to it and shipped the ARX update with so many bugs that they could not start work on the carrier update. What we got today was FDev telling us "The dog ate my homework". If they had been working on the carrier update this entire time it would be in the testing phase and nearly complete.

I think I agree with this sentiment. The delay likely means FC's weren't ready in the first place, or they would be far enough along by now to release no matter how they changed course.

I'm not sure it's due to poor management though, but rather due to management's priorities being different than the communities. The ARX update was pushed through even in its buggy mess of a state because it will generate money, thus it got prioritized. By the end of 2019 the ARX feature will be the sole major update to Elite Dangerous for the entire year. Fleet Carriers, while important to the players, likely won't be a huge source of revenue, thus it's not very important to management at FD. So it got bumped, probably due to a small amount of resources being devoted to it in the first place.

Revenue prioritization is why we'll likely never see the ice planet revamp either, nor atmospheric landings: they can't be easily monetized. Space legs are probably coming along with base building in the big 2020 update, because both of those open all manner of DLC doors and shopping opportunities. Thus they will be important to management.

This is all conjecture though, we truly don't know what's going on at FD. All we know is that development has slowed to an astoundingly glacial pace, bugs seem to last forever with new ones introduced in every update, and we have zero idea what the future of the game will be or even in what direction it is going. Not a promising place for a large franchise to sit at, for sure.

What have they sad about the new era that would make anyone believe its a huge deal anyway?
All they said its the biggest update yet (not hard) and they are very excited about it.

To me, that literally means nothing based on my experiences with FD over the last 5 years.

Well yeah thats the very sad truth if DE said that about warframe id expect it to be huge hell if most developers said that you would be excited yet it's fdev so here we are preparing to hugely lower our expectations because they will most certainly not be met

But they DO fix bugs and bring new content at the same time. See the part about how they fix hundreds of bugs with almost every patch.

Stopping everything to fix ALL the bugs at once, is a different thing entirely.

It feels like it might be time to start from scratch with a new Elite game, learning from the mistakes of this one.

That is all well and good but there is a major problem in the game right now.

That problem is the bleed of long-standing veteran players. Many famous names have now quit playing or do so very infrequently.

And lack of new content is a big part of the reason why.

Zero new content this year and none next year, that is a very bad recipe.

How much effort does it take to make a new ship? A New big one like Panther Clipper would be very welcome and might keep the game interest alive for people. Just something a little bit new to tide us over would be grand, and does not need to be a major big headline feature new ship here or there would do it for me. New module here or there. There are loads of ships in Elite1984 and Frontier and Frontier: First Encounters legacy lore than have not made it into the game. Panther Clipper, Boa and Imperial Explorer in large ship category.

Moray Starboat medium ship in every game since 1984 but not in Elite: Dangerous.

Gecko and Cobra Mk1 are small ships in every game since Elite1984 but not in Elite: Dangerous.

And let us not forget that Fleet Carriers were originally promised last quarter 2018(tho for squadrons only). 2nd quarter 2020 is actually an 18 month slip, not a 6 month slip.

Fixing the bugs is great but some new content is needed also. I wont leave the game but loads of ppl are and I am concerned about it.

Signing off,

CMDR Gavin786

Probably there is no point in writing a response - 34 pages so far - who reads all that? - but I decided to, because of balance. That is, if FD ever scans the thread to try and determine a general consensus of community feeling towards the whole thing I wanted to have my vote counted.

I'm a long-time fanboi but I am critical when I feel strongly. So I am not coming from a position of rose-tinted glasses - I see things for what they are - I believe. It is my opinion that this is a good call. In fact I would go so far as to say that certain previous parties did not have a necessary maturity in the field and actually hindered the pathway forwards as a result.

I think it is a good call because -
a) there is no real change in what we were expecting long-term. At the moment anyway - but if that does change then that was always a possibility and as it is for any major update of any digital product. So this refocusing does not change the already stated long-term path in any way as far as I can see.
b) the community, myself included, has been screaming for a focus on bug fixes for a long time and this delivers on that wish by making it policy. Furthermore, it indicates that, contrary to some loud moaners view, FD do listen to the community even if that is not stated often and loudly. This is just the British way - the rest of the world should make an effort to understand and respect that.
c) I personally see fleet carriers in the same light as the holo-me - a flash in the pan that adds very little once experienced for 5 minutes. A delay in delivering that actually affects my game very little - if at all in fact. In balance bug fixes affects my game way more than the introduction of fleet carriers.

So that is my opinion - for what it is worth.

Hello @Wobblin-Gobblin,

The new era is still set to be released by the end of 2020.

I will admit that the Exploration FC was a big anticipation for me. Bugs being addressed is also a good thing. Okay then Will, perhaps a small glimpse/reveal (since FC is delayed) of what we can expect with FC's? I'll buy in for the delay with that (not that there is much choice) having a bone like that to gnaw on. Doesn't have to be a complete look under the skirts, just a bit fuller teaser would be nice.

While I'm glad you're finally prioritizing the long-broken issues, as well as reintroducing betas so we don't get forced into not playing for a month... this is getting kind of crazy. Could you imagine Warframe, Destiny 2, even Anthem going years without any new content? Aside from paid cosmetics of course those always seem to find dev time.

I'm excited and happy about getting new stuff but you can and really should give us something every now and again. To have to go years without anything, no new srv's, no new ships, no new modules, no new engineerings.... you could do little things that keep us playing. But you won't... why?

Apparently it's too much to ask FD to stay of schedule and release properly tested products. Someone at upper or middle management is cutting corners. Im sure there is a power point somewhere for this.

Noop, It was FDev to promise Fleet Carrier. And it is also FDev to delay Fleet Carrier. No CMDR forced FDev to promise or to delay. I think you are getting off the track.

#NOARX #UNTILFLEETCARRIER
The needs of many: The bugs all across 3 platforms.
About half of all topics on Dangerous Discussion.
Screen tearing on Xbox Pro for example.

The needs wants of a few: A new Pokemon Carrier for the Multi Billionaires Club.

2 tracks, one dominant.

I have a lot of orange track actually.

Woke finger pointing. Something wrong with playing a game where I get to be "rich" for a change a problem?

I'll give you credit for announcing this a good month or so before Fleet Carriers were meant to be out, but come on you literally just did a massive PRESS release about the carriers and then pull them?

You really do need to focus on fixing bugs, no ones gonna disagree with you there, the state of the game especially since certain Dev's etc have been moved to other projects has become a broken mess but how much of this is actually simply because YOU choose to stop allowing the public beta testing to 'keep things secret'?

A lot of bugs were caught over the course of the Alpha and Beta's for all the previous bug releases ok you might not have LIKED the amount of them or when we pointed out that we'd reported some of them 5 - 10 times during Beta's and you STILL released them, but we are a far better test team at times it seems then your own QC and test departments, but here's the big question you say 3 - 4 month patch cycle... So ok nothings changed there on how we get bugs fixed etc at all, what promise do we have that your going to listen to us when we report bugs and actually FIX THEM before pushing the patch out given your history over the past several years?

There was a time when when we reported bugs in Alpha you actually listened to us and would hold off releasing a patch to fix them, there was a time in BETA'S for patches when the same happened the early patches were great examples of this, were if we reported issues it was taken serious, but as the years have gone on you stopped listening. Bugs we reported issues for in Horizons Beta's were ignored and the patches pushed out WITH those bugs in place, some times game breaking. So again are Frontier going to actually listen to us when we report things this time? Or are we just wasting our time beta testing like it seemed we were prior to you removing those tests and just shoveling things out as buggy broken messes that made the game almost unplayable for a subset of your player base.

Also if Fleeet Carriers were going to be complete on time, why couldn't they have been slipped in as the ONLY content update for the period of bug fixing? There delay really seems more like 'Oh beep our buggy mess means we need to really fix some of this before we can release them because the systems they use are broken.

Greetings Commanders,

Following the launch of the September Update last month, we’d like to provide you all with an update on our plans for Elite Dangerous.

Firstly, thank you for all of your feedback on the September Update, which you've shared with us on the forums, across social media, on livestreams and through the Issue Tracker. There is no doubt that, in addition to the new features, the September Update introduced a number of issues and bugs which caused a lot of frustration. We are really sorry for these issues. We realise that some of the issues had an impact on your ability to enjoy Elite Dangerous. The team have been working hard to address the most critical issues and have already released a series of patches and updates to bring those fixes in as quickly as possible.

However, we know there's more to be done. You've asked for more focus on existing bug/fixes and issues, and for the community to be better integrated into the development process and testing for these upcoming updates.

In order to improve your overall experience, we have decided to refocus our efforts on addressing key issues and bugs. Since the launch of the September Update, we've been taking a deeper look at our internal development roadmap, the way in which we utilise public betas, and the content of our next updates.

Here is a summary of our plans:
  • From now and into next year (2020), the updates will focus almost exclusively on addressing recent and longstanding issues, including those reported in the Issue Tracker, ultimately making the game better.
  • We are expecting to have a series of these updates, which will be rolled out (approximately) every three to four months.
  • Each update will also include a public beta that will run prior to the update's release, with a dedicated time to address major issues that appear.
  • The first of these updates will have its public beta in December, with an expectation that the launch will be early in 2020.
As a result of our updated plans, we have made the difficult decision to defer the release of Fleet Carriers. We are now planning for Fleet Carriers to be released in an update in the second quarter of 2020, rather than in December 2019 as previously stated. This will grant us additional time to refine the feature as well as focusing time on addressing existing reported issues. It will also ensure the state of the game is in a better position to introduce Fleet Carriers, that will provide Commanders even more opportunities to interact with the Milky Way. We understand that this delay will be disappointing for some players, but do know that this decision is one that we do not take lightly, and is made with the best interests of the community and game at heart.

Ultimately, we are confident that this will improve the Elite Dangerous experience for all our players.

The team have been hard at work on the next major milestone, which you may remember we mentioned back in March as our next major paid addition to the game. They’re making fantastic progress and on schedule for release by the end of next year. We are very excited to show you what we’ve been working on. However, we can only announce the content when it’s at the right stage of development, we estimate this will be ready to talk about at some time in summer 2020, after the Fleet Carriers update. We appreciate there is a bit of a wait, but we want to make sure it is ready to be shown before making our full official announcement to the world.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing and continued support and for helping give us the feedback, steer and insight to make decisions that will benefit the entire community and for your continued passion and dedication.

I am awake to the fact that it doesn't matter how much money you have.

I'm just saying it's not as important as some of the bugs that people are reporting.

I hardly ever post..... but when i do..

I'm sure it'll be largely ignored. But its been brewing for a while now.

tdlr : Disappointed at the speed of progress

I backed elite way back pre-release and invested back in the early beta game, I'm also a massive fan of elite and its very special to me. I played Elite Frontier as a kid and it blew my mind back on the Amiga. I remember watching David Brabens vision video's when it was in kick starter and I was super hyped that the game that captivated me so much as a kid was being brought back. All the talk of stowing away on other ships and was super excited by those old videos 6 years ago now... crazy how time gone by.
Fast forward to present and yes im still play and love the game, playing in VR is amazing (scale and immersion is still top), However, i digress. Currently and in the past couple of years if we're really being honest here development has slowed in both direction and vision, ( Cue: angry people who disagree ). What i mean by this is that development has been spent creating things that i feel dont really add to the core of what that early vision was really trying to captivate..For a few examples.. Power play : no body asked for and without any real draw (for me atleast), Generation ships ( while nicely done, the amount of work verses the amount that they engage the player was alwful, ill put it this way, you only visit them once...) CQC : That's pretty dead, i havent managed to play a game in there for a very long time. That being said i really enjoyed Horizons update and loved the fact i could land on planets and really liked plantary installations and the recent updates including the codex so we could visit clouds in space with lightning non violent space life forms of sorts ( a couple of highlights ) I also really liked thargoid stuff and improvements to the hud, and passenger missions and yes even mutlicrew update /wings and squadrons updates too.

Some hits , Some misses, However.
<rant>
And this is really the bit thats grinds my gears. I never thought that it would be 2019 and i still wouldnt be able to fly in a atmosphere of planet ( even if that planet wasnt poplated ) or even gas giant in this game, That there is still no space legs, Even if those space legs were consigned to shooting and or repairing things ( think Pulsar ). That we still would have only one SRV and couldnt deploy some sort of mine on planets that we could use to collect some resources or materials ( again, even it was similar to the way that Frontier Elite did it back in the day ). Cmon guys, you've been fully developing this game for 4 years atleast at full throttle and even if you disagree with some of what i said you still have to admit that its pretty underwhelming the progress that been made compared the progress made at the begining.
I understand that after 4 years theres a lot of bugs that have been pushed to one side and have slowly / collectivily have built up and yes, you need to get them sorted. I also understand that your developing this game on multple platforms and thats 3 times the works and fixes. How you thought you could deploy an update ( which i think is now universally understood as a epic balls up ) without a beta test server sounds a huge corner to cut, so im releaved to hear that you've brought it back into the deployment cycle.
Another gripe is how you interact with your community, yes im glad your responding to feedback about how the game is effectivley broken in some areas of the game. But the response to that petition. Unbelievable....really you want alienate people that took the time to compile that ! And then waste time with youtube streamer spotlight videos ( that , i gotta be honest are little more than watching your community managers twitch stream playing the game, with the occasional guest dev ). Thats not same as actively and positively addressing issues brought forward by your core player base. As for lack on information on future vision of elite where is it going.... seriously.. Its one thing to hold back spoilers. Its another to say "we're working on a big update" but everyone has to wait 2 years with out any info and pray that its still relevant by the time we bring it out.
And especially after you've just done ( and yes its quality ) improved the new player expierence to attract new players of the game, i mean seriously, what have they got to look forward to ? a working 4 year old game... and fleet carriers that they've heard about being delayed yet again ( even if they have no interest in them, its not a good look) , they have to wait even longer for anything new to get excited for.. <sacasm>Wow thats gonna keep em Playing<sacasm/>.
<rant/>

Summary : I love elite , really i do. But the way Frontier doesnt talk about this BIG update in 2020 at all doesnt give me any hope for the future, why... because. where is the game going ? why havent we seen any of those "procedual clouds" David talked about in 2012 (
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTBvpd3_Vqk
) ? . For a secular game , Frontier is sure asking for alot of Faith !
~ I can guess that number of concurrent/active player numbers is on downward curve/cliff to obscurity by time any future information is produced, let alone released. which makes me genuinely sad when looking at the promise/vision of Davids early kickstarter and vision videos.
If i had one messege to Frontier - " Get off your high horse and stop treating the community as (us and them) . We all want this game to be the best damn space game ever. Stop being confrontational towards your core community and start being more collaborative, remember , alot of those core players used to pay for pizza on those crunch updates of yester-year, be more honest about what we're waiting for, cause at the moment, disappointment is all that we see. "

p.s: Do i feel entitled... possibally, ive backed this project since i found out about it and i want it to do well.
