We Need to be Better as a Community

I have always been amused by some of the blatant antics here, especially those who create troll threads. I have found the easiest to ascertain if a thread is a troll thread or not is to see how often the OP responds in the thread. For example, if the OP is active in discussing/arguing with anyone who responds, then I class that as a 'discussion' thread. Sure might not be pretty, maybe even a little toxic at times, but at least a player made a point and is willing to argue his case.

On the other hand we have those wonderful threads where some player makes a wild allegation or statement in the OP and is never seen again. These are definitely troll threads, created just to cause mayhem and trouble in the forums.

Funny thing, haven't seen the OP to this thread since the first post …..

So Yamiks is a troll, you're saying.

If he doesn't stay around to discuss any questions or comments - YEP Just means that the person who creates a thread and doesn't care about what people say in their thread - bit of a waste of effort in my opinion :D

Well, those threads only exist to create clicks for the video. It's advertising on the forums.

I think some people started this thread thinking this guy was trying to do something positive, but context really just shows that nah, he just couldn't believe somebody could disagree with him, the audacity. The context really, really makes it.

I made an extremely impertinent reply to the post that prompted OP's comment, sufficiently impertinent that I was (as expected) banned from posting in the thread. All of which is fine by me; if I make a post which I know is against the rules of the forum as I did in that case, I also take responsibility for it and for any consequences.

That said, I wouldn't have made that reply if the player in question hadn't completely ignored the several responses he'd already had explaining his misconception, hadn't shouted down the players who took the trouble to reply to him and most of all, if he hadn't continued to rave about hacks rather than even considering for a few seconds that since by his own admission he didn't actually know what he was talking about, perhaps someone else did.

I never criticise people for not knowing something, God knows there are probably things I don't know about this game after four years of playing it. However there is a point at which it becomes clear that any attempt at civil discourse is frankly just a waste of time and effort because it will just be thrown back in your face.

Yeah the OP could not have picked a worse thread to base his manifesto on. In the original thread, that OP did everything wrong, went out of his way to antagonise and demean anyone who had the audacity to try to help him. Little wonder why most of us just gave up and decided to take the micky out of him instead. Think about it, we might as well make the thread enjoyable to us since it was evident the OP didn't want help, didn't want resolution to his perceived problems and dismissed anyone whose views differed to his.

Exactly. I'm usually a big advocate of Wheaton's Law when it comes to online interaction. On the occasions that I disregard it, it's usually because the other guy (or gal) did it first :D

The attack dogs are getting bored and edgy. Bored because most people here are adults and star citizen trolls aren't here or dead. Edgy because even they are starting to crack at frontiers performance. Hard to defend something that doesn't even show up to receive the adoration.

Bored white knights seem to be rallying at the moment and finding the most meaningless thing to make snide remarks or personal attacks at. The points are so trivial they come across as bored more than useful and they've even probably totally forgotten they were here once to "support" frontier developments.

Lol poor white knights.

(yes, this is bait).

Yummy, that is good bait... nom nom nom...

'Has anyone seen Gavin' ?
I have said my piece, dont want to go into arguing with anyone, following my Rule#2.

Point made it was not such a great example thread is well taken, but what I said is generally true, and I read first page of the thread and saw bunch of things not too nice to OP so decided to write my post. Which took me bit of time on-and-off that evening, so more maybe said on thread I didnt see while writing, but I can understand if OP was feeling defensive and chose to express that by stubbornly clinging to his position. He chose to respond by sticking his heels in rather than lashing out and I can understand that. And I understand veterans' frustration also but guy said he was a noob/casual and we need to extend a lot of leeway to these people especially.

I am just getting fed up with the nastiness that is going around and felt for awhile I needed to take a stand. This has been a long time coming.

Having seen all the replies to this I am beginning to understand the enormity of the Mods' task and was too hard on them in what I said. If they crack down then there will be no one left on the forum. And getting a warning is a serious matter; 5 in 3 months is a perma-ban which can have serious repercussions on access to Frontier's services also. And I think mods dont have other tools than warnings at their disposal so dont want to issue them if they possibly can get away with not doing so.

I think a big part of the problem of moderation is that there is no 2-way communication when you get a warning. Its not possible to query it and ask specific reasons why it was given, or even to offer apology and say it wont happen again, and its a big problem.

And I am glad of the strong response to the thread, though a lot of people dont share my opinion, and more pointed out I chose the wrong thread as an example.

On that, modding anything online is a thankless task but gaming forums are probably in the worst 25%. I've been on forums with great mods and forums with terrible mods (a lot of forums probably have both kinds) but it's something I know I'd never do in 10,000 years.

must be a new thing. not gotten a warning in (i think?) a few years, but had lots of them at a time. lots! some of them totally unmerited but couldn't care less. not all moderators are (were) angels, you know. i got even a temporary ban (employee bashing!! i'm still laughing at that one 😂). whatever, i'm just outspoken, if that means rejection by a group then fair enough, bye bye, i won't force my presence on anyone. still rocking though!

Nah man, those numbers aren't right. I get warnings like they're coming out of a Pez dispenser and I'm still here to brag about it😀

Oddly enough most of my rants dont result in moderation , there was one exception a couple of years back in the "sdc are quitting the game" thread, wierd though cause all i posted was a picture of 2 cowboys staring lovingly at each other with the caption "why cant i quit you" ... the funny part , it was moderated for "spam" .. SPAM? In the dangerous discussion forum? Its all i usually see here but meh .. brushed it off as an over reaction and lack of sense of humour.
