Buyback NPC Crew

Tested in the Beta just now, picking up a fighter bay, a crew pilot (Harmless-rated), setting them as active crew, launching my ship and self-destructing. This is what the rebuy screen looks like:

D3F126D7344421FA8911785A25FC64CC68AA4014

The rebuy cost is 20% of the 15,000 credits I paid for the pilot initially. Crew appeared safe and sound in the active crew roster after finishing with the rebuy screen, will have to be set active again, of course. So far, no problems.
Seems strangely cheap.

I still feel like it should be... more? Significantly, especially for an Elite crew member.
Yeah, 150,000cr is peanuts for an Elite SLF pilot.

It's frustrating to lose an NPC pilot that you've invested a lot of time with, but ship destruction needs to feel consequential. Maybe some kind of rescue mission to get them back would be a more balanced solution?

That's way cheap. I just don't get why they ping-pong between extremes. First they are iron-man mode dead, because loss should be consequential, then they cost less than a few tons of platinum to replace. Seriously. I like 5% of lifetime earning or 100% hire price whichever is more. You been with this pilot from the beginning of your empire? You're going to pay to get them back, but you can get them back. Someone you hired yesterday... pretty cheap really.

Lifetime earnings shouldn't play any role in crew rebuy cost - since the said crew has no role in exploration, trading, mining or combat in which they did not participate.

It's about making the re-buy of some consequence, they didn't actually fly for me either. 150,000 for an elite SLF pilot for anyone not in their first month playing is pocket change and means there is no consequence to the loss.

Nah, if those 150000 credits are the result of the 5% insurance fee, then so be it. It is more fair than setting some arbitrary value.
And let's not talk about consequences... people do not want consequences else we will not have a rebuy for SLF Crews now.

Who is really looking for consequences should not tick the rebuy checkbox.

Right. I should probably get out a 20 sides die to roll for odds as I've seen posted out there rather than have a natural and straight-forward game-based risk to deal with. Rather than decide if my pilot is worth the cost, the better game-play is another meaningless checkbox to tick at re-buy.

Anyway, I doubt they will change it so not much point getting worked up over it.

Is there any kind of cost scaling for crew who have been rescued from the rebuy screen multiple times? Or a noticeable difference between crew who were hired as dangerous or those hired harmless and repped up to dangerous?

Maybe a slight reduction in their combat rating. 10% down from wherever they are - from Elite to 90% Deadly, for example.

You know, lots of head trauma in explosions.

This would at least give multiple slots some meaning.

As it stands, my CMDR has three Elite ranked crew on retainer at all times, as I (used to, and will again, once certain bugs are resolved) use them heavily in PvP. I expected them to die and I expected to need to have backups on hand to always be able to field an Elite. This took planning and forethought. This made loss relevant.

If I can just buy them back for a few percent of the already trivially low rebuy cost of a ship (any ship), then all of that is meaningless and everyone will have an Elite at all times, with essentially zero downsides.

I'm not a grinder either. I don't farm credits or materials. I don't even go out of my way to rank crew, they do that all by themselves while I do BGS CZ work from an SLF. Even starting from Harmless, NPC crew, given control of a PvP Corvette, can win CZ after CZ and be Elite rank in a few weekends, with minimal handholding.

Consequences have to apply wether I want them to or not.
I'm glad. This just might, might stop one or two people from combat logging in the future.

If that means your illusions of consequence have to be shattered then I'm all for it!
