More than 2 button options in fire groups

It been suggested before and But if you are smart. You would have forward backwards on select next Fire group. So if you have 5 fire groups it only takes 2 clicks to get to the farthest fire group.

Don't know if it's been suggested before but with today's joysticks, we typically have more than 2 buttons at our disposal. It would be nice if we could have fire groups with more than 2 options available. Would require less cycling through fire groups. Just a thought / suggestion.
it's not even that hard to code into the game. This would be a great quality of life update.

Well, obviously 2 since their are only 2 available. x)
I am not talking about Fire Buttons but Fire groups. If you set up your fire Groups right even if you have 7 fire Groups. It only 3 click to the farthest group to use what needed.

Right sorry, didn't understand the first time.
Fire groups are an amazing tool, but I just feel like they weren't designed with combat versatility in mind, rather it just feels like they thought about the need to switch from combat to exploration or mining tools.

Sure you can use them to cicle through your weapons. But why can't I shoot my 5 hardpoints at the same time with out it being systematic ? Why ask of players to deal with it when a clear easy fix is in reach ?

that a different subject and I agree it needs to be addressed.

Well you can shoot all 5 hardpoint if you have one fire group set up with all 5 hardpoints.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm aware of how it works and there's no need for insults (Re: your suggestion that those who don't cycle in both directions must not be smart).

My point is that given how most joysticks have several buttons these days, it would be a nice quality of life feature to have.

I am not trying to insult. I am stating FACTS that can help players like your self and others You might not like it because it discredits Your idea of needing a third fire button. But a Well configured fire group, as well as a good controller setup, will eliminate your need of a third fire button at the most I use 5 Fire groups so everything I need is 2 click away. but I able to use 7 fire group and stay within 3 clicks and having what needed. I guess setting up the controller is a skill in itself.

Ya, My 2 joystick setup. So ya I have has a lot of buttons. I use Dual Flight sticks for 13 years in the game called Descent 1, 2 and 3. (different joysticks at the time) Left hand Saitek ST290 Pro Right hand X52 Pro. Oh, note the X52 has a throttle control also. But here the thing I try to keep my hands on both flight stick itself and not have to lift my hands off the joystick. But that me.

Here a question what happens if they add something that needed for that Extra button. Are you going to the keyboard and let your hands off the controller?

As already mentioned: the topic was already around during the beta. (Probably even earlier, i just can't tell. ) But FD decided to keep it to two fire buttons to keep things compatible to a controller. It won't change.

Not sure that's really valid considering that the "buttons" can be any button we want it to be. It does not have to be on a joystick specifically as you can map a button on your throttle as well. The game doesn't care as long as it's a valid button that the operating system recognizes.

Your comment actually was a bit insulting by insinuating stupidity in those who don't configure their buttons the way you would. If you want to suggest something, suggest it. Don't do it in a way that suggests others are stupid if they're not playing your way. Thank you though for sharing your awesomeness with us. Some of us have been playing flight sims since the 80s and I personally have lots of buttons on my Virpil WarBRD grip and Virpil MongoosT-50CM throttle. In fact, more than Windows 10 cares to recognize. I too played the Descent series. Great game. I also try to avoid the keyboard if possible.

Regardless: It's a simply quality of life. That OPTION of a 3rd or even 4th button (because you don't have to map it if you don't want to) is a simple quality of life suggestion. It's a QoL improvement to have the options right there, ready to go, instead of clicking 2 or 3 times like you suggested, to change fire groups. For those with a mix of weapons, it's helpful.

It is what it is: the developers said that people who use a controller should not be at a disadvantage and the controller default settings only allow two fire buttons. I use a HOTAS and also would like to have more buttons available. But I am neither designer nor developer of this game. So I have to accept their decision here.

This suggestion regularly pops up, which is no wonder because it would make sense. The devs have seemed very adamant about not adding fire buttons and I never understood why. I haven't heard the controller parity explanation before, and it sounds plausible. Too bad, I too would welcome the QoL improvement of more triggers. Even a third trigger that was restricted to scanners and other utility mount items would be helpful. Some of those can already be hotkeyed so the controller thing shouldn't be the issue.

Not to mention that there are a few things which have no hotkey yet. The prime example is the Shutdown Field Neutraliser. A easy welcome solution would be to have a hotkey for that one, too. But much more pretty it would be to change the current fixed hotkeys for Chaff, SCB, ECM, HeatSink so they'd rather be buttons for Utility 1 to Utility 4. Very much like the current firebuttons 1 and 2. Then on the right hand panel where you can assign weapons to fire buttons, you also allow us to assign utilities to the utility buttons.

This has two advantages:
1. Long term for the developer. No matter which new thing you still implement, you don't need to implement another hotkey. People just will have to assign things properly.
2. Four buttons will still be enough for a long time. If for example the Shutdown Field Neutraliser would get its own hotkey, you'd again have to find where to put it on keyboard, HOTAS and controller. But it's a good example. My Anti-Thargoid ships never carry ECM or Chaff. So i never use the hotkey for them. By being able to assign a button to a system and saving it ship-specific, as the game already does for weapons, all the bases would be covered.

I'd really appreciate that a lot. But alas, i also wrote this already more than once in the run of the years. It never got traction.

That is a good idea. 4 Utility buttons would be a good number because many HOTASes have 4-way switches/hats.
