Where did it go wrong?

There is no "they" on a forum with hundreds of posters and dozens of opinions. Claiming that everybody that wanted the bugs fixed also wanted no new features is just as much nonsense.
I assume people would preferably have new features without bugs, and the bugs that still make it into the game to be adressed in the following update. At least that's how development is supposed to work.
Despite you gracelessly not quoting what you were responding to, it was a post where "they" referred to specific people in specific threads, not everyone on the entire forum. So your "correction" is basically pointed entirely at your own misunderstanding.

And bug fixes in following updates as "that's how development is supposed to work" is a pretty bold claim in the same sentence where you're decrying bug fixes being rolled out in a following update.

Clearly it hasn't worked out.

Where do you think FD made a mis-step?
I don't think they really mis-stepped, but for me Elite got less and less interesting with every update that favored combat and "modern" gameplay instead of the simulation and actual space content. The science behind the game is what keeps me playing, and though I'm still playing I miss the great space sim it was supposed to be (according to its prequels and my preference.)

Screeching isn't an outcome unless all you want to do is look down on fellow community members. Its the game topics that matter. It goes mods -> white knights -> issues. Noone expects a formal response to junk. Having said, a developer might want to for public image reasons but of course no expectations.

Screeching is always the outcome usually of the entitled type.

You've got the forum undead, the single issue obsessives, the pre-purchase reading failures and of course the ones who never actually played at all none of whom actually have the first clue what's going on with the game making the most noise. None of them have anything useful to contribute, so FDEV just ignore them as they should.

If they tried to explain the roadmap to them they'd simply ignore it again.

b) regardless of anyone else's opinion, in my opinion the communication of the LEP has been terrible.

You get all subsequent DLC for no further charge, if there is any. That's all there is to an LEP.

Well, they added defensive modules which give you a huge amount of health and compete for space with the modules used to engage with the have world, then they added engineering that both was a grind, a massive upgraded in power, and comically poorly balanced, then they made said engineering less of a grind (but still a big grind), and doubled-down on it being any even BIGGER upgrade in power, and even more poorly balanced. Plenty of other mistakes have been made too, but all of them pale in comparison to the damage done to both the game's design and to the game's soul by the aforementioned changes.

The information regarding the progress shown and upcoming content has not changed much since Dec 2014 (even during the original beta). The same information you could see shared in those dev blogs was later also posted in newsletters, forum posts, live streams in similar level of detail and ammounts commensurate to the updates at hand. Wether it came from Michael Brookes, Zac, Ed, Will etc or other members of FDEV it has been essentially the same.

Here a couple examples from 2015:

Newsletter #71 from April 2015, where the imminent Powerplay, new mining tools and Courier ship were discussed
Newsletter #91 from September 2015, where the sneak peek and M Brookes update discussed the imminent Corvettes and Cutter ships.

And here from 2016 and 2018:

Newsletter #120 from April 2016, where the imminent release of Engineers was being discussed
Newsleteer #249 in October 2018, where the imminent release of Beyond chapter 4 was discussed, including livestream reveals and forum posts.

The information contained in all the different posts, livestreams or articles etc in the above are essentially describing the upcoming short term content. Weather it has been Michael Brookes or other FDEV members, in a blog, forum post or livestream, level of detail and timing has been essentially the same since 2014.

Why not. Nice try. But:

I said weekly. Progress reports. I know it´s hard to believe, but yes - weekly.

So yes - communication has changed. You may want to defend your position, but in fact the frequency of News decreased over the past few years.

Why would I have to make your argument for you?

You're the one who made the claim. Let's hear you back it up, since it's so "obvious": How is Horizons not an expansion?

Well you could just read my response to Stigbob's post, it's all there ;)

So extrapolate. Guess, based on the context, what you think I meant. I'll put something up later if you genuinely can't figure out what I mean.

Mm, swing and a miss, mate. Remember, claim here is that there are no expansions. Don't try and move the goalposts.

I don´t care how you name it. At least things have gone pretty wrong since 2015 and as stated before I have some hopes that everyone realized that the game design was - lets say - not top of the list and that they immediately started to go for a second Elite franchise. And if that´s not the case I feel ripped off. End of story.

Sorry that I am not posting your opinion but mine.
