This time next year (hopefully)

Although, what to make of this?

The Elite Dangerous team

Am I reading more into the highlight than exists?

This time next year I'll finally have my NPC copilot!

More likely it'll be like this

AFAIK all they've really promised is fleet carriers, and they've failed to deliver for a long time on that. I'm not getting my hopes up for any more than that, I'm so tired of disappointment with this game.

It sounds as if the January 6th Let's Play is going to talk about 'the future'... unheard of!
...and the mention of FC's is, shall we say, imprecise as to their arrival?
Sounds like you're reading into it about the right amount then. We shall see on the 6th.
I would hazard a guess not. I would have thought they would do an announcement on Thursday evening to maximise their potential audience. Monday is just their normal play session.

Happy to be proven wrong, of course.

Before:
"As long as we can do everything from the seat, I don't want to get out and move around, takes too long"

After:
"I always leave the seat actually, I get more credits and a more immersive experience, besides, sneaking onto another commanders ship is very fun"

yea, space legs is going to be a game changer. it absolutely can. but it needs a lot more than just you walking around where ever. these original concept art pictures on the first page are inspiring. but it doesn't work if no ones there. there need to be characters. not just procedurally generated npc's. those will be the majority of course. but there need to be actual characters that mean something. something you can build a relationship on. i don't mean a space girlfriend. but real motivations to help them. real motivations to do the missions they give us. if fdev manage to create npc's that don't feel like robots, i think we'll have a great future ahead of us.

My fear is we won't see NPC's at all with space legs. ... I have this dread that it will be multiplayer only and before you laugh ... How many SRVs have you seen which were not player controlled?.

Fallout 76 is the same.... Although even Bethesda have admitted that was a mistake and they are coming next year.

That would be depressing. Stations NEED some people milling around, as does the bridge of my larger ships. Surely it can't be that hard. Just make them walk in circles - it works for those dumb little toy cars in the station :p

Some people like to complain about others. Some are addicted to being a victim. And Outrage Culture empowers them.

we will certainly see npc's. but to what extend remains to be seen. will they have ai, will at least some have ai, or will they all just follow pre-defined scripted paths when you're on a station or other type of building.

i mean, the possibilities are almost endless. but we can at least somewhat estimate what's possible. after all, this still is a multiplayer game which comes with limitations. i don't think we're going to see 10+ ai controlled npc's at a space that is populated by 32 possible commanders. the netcode is already pretty poor to begin with. while it's possible, i don't see a complete rewrite of the netcode that would enable cloud based ai computation. possible but unlikely. when it comes to ai npc's in general, i think we see a lot of instancing. instances for single players and up to four within a wing. i don't think we'll see ai controlled npc's at populated open areas like on stations. which means there's probably no interaction with them besides some menus.

but, again, there's a lot of possibilities how npc's are going to be realized. i highly doubt we won't see any npc's at all.
