General / Off-Topic What are you reading currently?

Just finished reading the whole Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Last Chronicles being four books long. It must have taken a year and half to read the lot and, quite frankly, I became so invested in the characters and story I didn't want it to end.... but everything ends.

In my opinion Donaldson is an out and out genius. What a ripping yarn and what an immense vocabulary. I have read the First and Second Chronicles previously... twice. Reading the whole thing again including the Last Chronicles..... worth it; every page totally worth it.

Now what to read next.....
I decided I needed a break from fiction so I have a raft of non-fiction books lined up beginning with this:

I have had another of his titles, What Is Karate? for decades. About six months ago I walked into a second-hand bookstore when I was in another city and found this title...... not only is his work revered in the martial arts world but this title is incredibly rare, I've been looking for it for decades.

I picked up the freshly e-book-released Catcher in the Rye. As most people surely did, we had to read it at school and at the age of fourteen or so. Back then I hated it at first but after a while I started reading ahead from the class and for the next thirty-some years would usually say that it was my favourite book. Rereading it now I realise that I could barely remember more than three lines from it, let alone where it's going to end up.

While I could remember Caulfield meeting with the call-girl, I had completely misremembered how it really played out, thinking it had been a much gentler encounter. Perhaps that was a failure of my comprehension at the time rather than my memory, but it generally feels like reading a completely different book with his normal(ish) bad(ish) language and preoccupations being much more prominent than I recalled. I can see that when I first read it I would have had no idea about the culture of his time, class or location so that all makes much more sense now. Maybe that hurdle when I first read it was the reason I didn't initially enjoy the book, or if I was just an obnoxious teen that didn't like my English teacher much. There is still a quarter left so I will have to see if I will still consider it my favourite book by the end.

It's skydiver, from a childrens program UFO (1980s)
“Children’s program”? How dare you, Sir! :)

(Although I was a child when I first watched it, and my Dinky SHADO Mobile & Interceptor were prized toys, it’s only after rewatching the series recently on Blu-ray that I’ve come to appreciate the stories. It’s pretty much XCom The Series and well worth a watch)(Also, it was set in 1980, but actually came out in 1970. It has a few of those mind-bending stories of the type found in 60’s TV but not so much since. There’s one absolute corker fourth-wall breaking episode that I cannot think of an equivalent in any other show)

OT: Just finished The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle which was a good ‘un, now reading The Lie Tree. Also midway through vol 6 of Akira (I didn’t realise the manga was so different from the film) and the second hardback collection of Lazarus.

I know the UFO series well, they are all on you tube, and I still watch the odd episode now and again, it was well before its time like all of Jett and Sylivia Anderson productions. A bit of trivia knowledge that you may or may not know, the actress who plays Col Virginia Lake (Wanda Ventham ), is Benedict Cumberbatch's mother. I know the 4th wall episode you are thinking of, excellent episode.

No I didn’t know that, top trivia!

I’m slowly reworking my way through the Anderson’s series on Blu-ray, seeing them in HD and with restored colour is quite a difference from the pokey old 14” telly they were first viewed on, or the few times I’ve watched the SD versions on freeview or YouTube over the past few years.

I’ve done Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, UFO, and I’m now part way though s1 of Space 1999. Probably going to rewatch New Captain Scarlet after that.

Finished the Fitz and the Fool trilogy, by Robin Hobb, sometime last autumn,

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. 5/5! Loved it.
My only complaint is that in typical YA fashion, I didn't believe for a second that any of the characters are 17. I just imagined them as like 30 years old in my head and then the story was perfect.
Reading the sequel, Crooked Kingdoms, now.

Arch of Triumph and I am almost done with it. If someone has read this book he knows how magnificent it is. Amazing quotes and descriptions of main characters made me feel overjoyed. I've even chose this book for my college task and wrote an excellent essay with some help. I guess such book should be in school shedules all the time. At least children will get joy while reading that
