End of Hellion game developement

One big mistake, dayz in space is not interesting, you need a story, and you need PVE options. I hope Frontier looked at it, made notes and is now making a good space DLC for ED with Legs. They manage to do that and they will win the space race by far, if not by by ED.

Oh but Hellion was and still is really interesting and someone saying that "you need PVE options", i can tell you havent even played the game, havent you..

That's the key point of my sadness: last updates were about introducing a narrative and solo features (quests, solo mode). Looked like they wanted to bring more Subnautica to Hellion. It was a good thing, started to shape well and optimizations reached a point where the game was pleasant on extensive sessions.

BTW I bought Breathedge and it confirms what I hoped: it's a funny mix of soft-core spacelegsim and lighthearted nonsensically hilarious Subnautica in space.

Do I smell another jucy drama?

Hi. I loved much of the idea of hellion however the thing which stopped me buying was the forced PvP nature of the game and lack of NPC content.... However I heard rumours that a fully PvE story was coming. Did this ever get finished as if so I may jump in. I always felt helion offered the space legs as well as complexity which I would absolutely loved ED to mirror if we ever get EVA.

So TLDR the game in its final state, is there enough there (and is it possible) to have a pure PvE game with some content either alone or with mates.

Also..... Have the Devs stated if they plan to release the source code so the community can run with it? If so hellion could still be a hell of a thing. Just look at games like freelancer.

Hellion does now have a single player mode, it was one of the later things added. I certianly put a few hundred hours into Hellion on private Discord servers with a rule set much akin to how Mobius works in Elite...since I enjoyed the coop and social interaction with friends but really despised the pure PvP survival nature of vanilla Hellion. The server I played on is still up, still has folks playing including a few friends who drop on occasionally.

Single player mode is more difficult than it is when playing alongside friends...I was never particularly interested in the base building antics, where as most of the friends I played with did a pretty good job of arranging a base with facilities and getting the thing into a stable orbit while I roamed around and brought back modules, ships and equipment.

This sounds interesting. Without holding you to it.... Do you think the servers are likely to stay up now the game is done? If I buy it today I may not get round to playing for 6 months... But at the same time I am still tempted.

I'd honestly wait and see what happens...the French guy that ran the private server I played on had full access to the server side controls...he could make rule sets and control the server content for instance. If a new guy was struggling and had his equipment wrecked, he could replace it at his discretion or move player stations into stable orbits if they collided with random space debris or on occasion, other players stations....he removed the annoying turrets on dead modules or the ability to place turrets...many other things like dictate what starting equipment spawned in the module you did or arranging more or less stable orbits, amount and timing of orbiting space debris making it more difficult or easier to get going which suggests that the server side code available was quite extensive in user control.

I'm hopeful that the community will still go ahead and make this a thing...or at least keep it going .

The advantage of single player mode is, that you can save the game and resource usage stops when you log out.
For example, every module requires nanite cores to protect the module from radiation and when that wears out, the module gets destroyed.
Now, in multiplayer those cores wear out in real time, meaning that when you install a brand new core, it lasts for 30 days in real time and keeps wearing out even when you log out. But in single player, every time you log out, the "game world" stops, so you can take a long breaks from the game without the fear of losing your modules or ships.

Hellion is definitely worth buying for the price its sold atm, despite of that controversy last week. And for me Hellion is one of the best space games there is, even with the bugs. :)

Thanks for the reply. I did a quick Google. Am I right in saying I can set up my pc as a temporary server and host with a handful of mates?
I think that may be a better fit for me ( and the folk i would.play with ) esp as that way everything will stop when I log out.
Thanks again

Hellion - the last announcement
Dear survivors,

This is the last official announcement by Zero Gravity, since the team has already been disbanded. This is what happens with Hellion:

  1. The game will be free for download on Steam from March 27, 10AM (PT) until March 30, 10 AM (PT).
  2. After that, it will be no longer available for purchase.
  3. You will still be able to play Hellion.
  4. We’ll keep the main server online.
  5. We’ll keep official servers EU West and US West online (two instances of each).
  6. Community servers will stay alive, and the new ones can be added at any time in the future.
  7. Single player mode will stay available.

We have received a lot of support from players during the past couple of months. And we want to thank you all. These measures are meant for Hellion to stay alive since you enjoy playing it.

We’d like to give a huge shoutout to Hellion moderators who have been volunteering in managing the Hellion community and the official servers. Thank you so much team!

Big thanks to Nitrado for providing us with official Hellion servers!

And to you all out there in space - thank you for these wonderful years trying together with us to make a super special space experience that still can’t be found anywhere else. It was a blast!

Stay safe,
Zero Gravity

Thanks for the heads-up, just grabbed it. Shame that the studio folded, but the game looks interesting for what it is, and you can't argue with free!

I really dont understand why ZG didnt just sell the source code to someone who could have continued their work.
Theres even players who has expressed intererest in buying the code and has reached out to ZG but no one has answered.

Real shame, since Hellion has/had a huge potential.. :(

I think the team are still too taken up by in-fighting to respond to be fair...they can't release the source code until they're at least speaking to eachother.
