Newcomer / Intro What is the meaning of the white circles around bodies in supercruise?

Do they have more precise meaning or usefulness other than that the encircled body exerts gravity? Does the number of them and how they grow and fade away mean something?

They dont indicate any specific quantity of gravity well, they are simply there to give a sense of movement towards them.

I believe FDev calls them "range markers". I wish they could be turned off ...

The coloured ones do have some meaning. If you go inside the ones around stars, you fall into the star. The blue ones around planets show the zone inside which you get orbital cruise data. Other ones have other effects.

...
Could they be used to more optimally approach the body or an orbiting station in supercruise?
In general approaching a planet is quicker by flying straight at it because your maximum speed gets lower the closer you are. If you go to a station in orbit or a settlement on the surface you may have to fly around the planet to reach it. In that case a (steep) spiral inwards will be the quickest. Someone wrote a paper on optimal trajectories to approach planets. Maybe I can find it...

--edit: Got it. On Canonn's site of course. PDF download link at the bottom of page.
