Watching the current livestream...

Here's how you do a good livestream: show off concept stage stuff, show old dev videos and how that's progressed over time, show gameplay, show alpha gameplay, joke about RNGesus - generally know your community and engage with them.
eg:

Seriously watch bits of the video (top comment has timestamps) and see how it compares to FDev ones.

Rebecca (and Megan) could actually play the game too.

err Paige could actually play the game.

As a 'new' player she didn't use DC or SCA, used the market to identify goods to buy to sell at the next station, even managed to do a loop of shame....unfortunately I heard none of her thoughts on the subject because someone else was yet again answering Questions in chat about an update they weren't going to be talking about again and Fleet Carriers which will be discussed later and the update coming in 24hrs with no new information coz its already on the flaming update thread page and has been for a week nearly.

I heard all that for 10 minutes before turning off.

I wonder if they discuss this in the office

All of their recent livestreams have had similar feedback.

If that was happening on my YouTube channel I would take it as a sign that a format change is needed. I certainly wouldn't carry on doing the same thing.

Paige, Stephen, Will and all the other CM are great. They really aren't the issue. Far from it in fact.

They also don't need to talk about the future of the game or answer, unanswerable questions.

That said, clearly the audience want the steams to be more interesting/varied/engaging. And there's plenty of ways to do that without requiring significant additional work from the CM.

I appreciate that the recent livestreams are aimed at new players. But the first thing those new players are going to see is the level of like / dislikes. As well as all the negative comments. It's certainly not a good look.

I'd echo StuartGT's suggestions. That really shouldn't be too difficult to implement.

They make it clear in every lunch stream that there will be no news. And every stream the first few minutes are full of people asking for news because ... there are lots of people on the internet. Those streams are intended to be just a bit of fun and banter.

Normally it settles down after a while and gets a bit friendlier.
I mean the streams are usually zzzzzzzz

Regarding the Youtube comments, yeah i hope they don't even bother reading them

This sort of thing could be turned around even with one of my earlier suggestions of adding user pictures, video, or general content in the stream. Hell, even a story.
They could even boost participation by committing what might be seen as a great evil here and offering a prize to the best user submitted x for the week. Doesn't have to be much. Even if it's only sunglasses for the holo me, it's a token.

What can they talk about in the Livestreams regarding 2020 DLC?... everyone already knows they are space legs, base building and atmospheric planets because of the 'leak' /s

One can almost picture the salt avalanche should those lovely CM's mention that the DLC is something else entirely :)

I did watch around 30 minutes of the Livestream, I wasn't particularly inspired by it but they were doing their best with available resources - and almost constant griping in chat about something they can not discuss or even hint toward, which they tell everyone "nothing new'" as they start.

They aren't empowered to discuss anything they may know, can't answer questions about things they should know, and have to sit politely through the 'howling mob' every week...

They always get a (y) from me, regardless of 'content', just because they are in the 'firing line' week-in and week-out...

I'd imagine you don't attract as many long term furious lunatics as they do given they've sold millions of copies of the game. People come to your channel voluntarily because they want to watch it rather than they want to rant and already copped bans on the forum, facebook and reddit.

If you did attract them in the same numbers (you must have had a few) would you allow them to hang about on your channel repeatedly telling you they don't like your stuff downvoting everything on "principle" or demanding their own way in the comments of every single video you ever make or do you just bin them their comments and their votes along with them ?.

And to be honest this is the most important thing really.

FD need creative ways to keep people engaged, especially in lulls. They have the tools and means, its a matter of using them.
I'm getting worried... I appear to be agreeing with your comments altogether too often :)

If only the management could understand the same thing...

I wasn't trying to compare my livestreams to theirs. Simply suggesting that a format change might be in order. And stating that is what I would do.

But you are right. There's no doubt a number of lunatics involved. That said, it's not possible to remove votes on videos on YouTube. Whilst a person can be banned from commenting, they can't be banned from voting / disliking.

Personally I think they should just stop with the Let's Play nonsense. Focus on more communication on the forums instead.
If they do a livestream it should be about development of past, current and future content / features.

Well, they do that too - Thursdays (theoretically).

Is it just mis-communication? They run the lunchtime streams but don't tend to say upfront 'no news, we're just playing' - so it's not incredibly surprising people turn up and ask what is new (though some of the repeat offenders certainly know better). And so each time you have the 'presenters turn up, introduce themselves, read the chat, tell people they are in the wrong place' narrative, rather than being more up-front.

Maybe they need some marquee text scrolling across the screen saying 'No news, just bantz' or something (as people turn up throughout the stream because ... streaming).

Things about all this is - it takes time to do interesting stuff. The answer we'll probably get if we demand 'only interesting and innovative streams' is probably 'on this month's stream we have ...'

Exactly. I love the deep dives and find them very interesting, the newsletters and forum are ideal for showing new things / explaining in a condensed way. Competitions that creatively involve the game (but require minimal or no dev time) have been done before so why not more? Then its generating content in a two way fashion, and not trying to stretch something that cannot be made any thinner.

Yup. And if they really want to show a new feature in video format, they could always create a 5 minute clip rather than an 1 hour livestream.

IDK. Maybe the difference is "it's my job to do streams about ED" (community manager) or "I do videos/streams about ED for the love the game" (common youtuber).
If something becomes a job, often the creativity suffers.

I feel like there is a lot of that going on currently at Frontier Developments, at least that would explain the recent buggy low effort updates.
Feels like the current staff is suffering from some burnout of the game, can't blame them.
But the enthusiasm about Elite Dangerous 5 years ago was clearly different.

Always loved the livestreams with Ed and Will, they had great chemistry together. And while they did some personal banter, it was less, and usually about the topic "What's for lunch today".

They could take a lesson from the Queen, who telegraphs messages by what she wears and what she has on her desk.

A photo of a pair of feet would do wonders to excite the Legs crowd, and a sketch of a base under construction, perhaps hanging on the wall behind, would also be beneficial. Maybe even an image of Yamiks under fire would send a subliminal message to eager viewers ......
