The Fer-De-Lance - The Pilot

Loved this one.

As far as the snake names is concerned, please refer to DB-OBE. 😁

Even in the Dark Wheel Novella, which came with the original game, on page 4 it says "No-one knew how or when the designation of space-going vessels had been linked to the names of snakes".

As JKar would say:- 'It's one of those things that should remain a mystery because if you ever found out the answer, it would drive you mad!"

... Big fan Pilot. That said...

Snakes...

What's wrong with snakes?

Way better than dogs as a naming convention then again some may prefer the "German Shepherd" or "Coyote", hey how about "King Chiuhaha", or the "Saint Barnard". I kind'a like "Mutt" that might be alright.

Or maybe Famous people would be better? Or p.orn stars? Yeah that's the ticket. ED ships named after p.orn stars? Yaaaayyyy!

Maybe big cat's - seriously - Jaguar, Lion, Puma, Cheetah, etc - that'd be OKAY. Mix it up with the snakes.

But - No - Snakes are just fine.

Yeah, no. I get it.

But...it's also been a few decades. It might be time to explain the lore a bit? Maybe expand on it? Weave me a rich and interesting tapestry for me to get lost in. There really shouldn't be 4 "independent" companies using the same naming convention.

Imagine if Lockheed Martin and Boeing both named their aircraft after frogs. It's weird.

Yeah, but you're probably thinking of names like "Leviathan", "Mako" and "Manta", which is all well and good. But leave it up to Lakon and within a year we'll have the "Type-11 Sturgeon", a ship designed specifically to never be purchased or flown by anyone for any reason.
Ha!
I'm saying it worked for Saud Kruger....The Beluga, Dolphin, and Orca. Yeah?

Back in the late 70s and most of the 80s. The cobra, was a little boys wet dream, car to have. The looks, the sound, its speed and imagined handling. So much so, that Ford, I think it was the 3rd generation, of the Mustang, was named Mustang 'Cobra'.

So now you are making a game, totally surrounded by a single ship. It needs a name. Something special, something every little boy can relate to. Something that represents power, speed, that is instantly recognised and remembered and most important of all. Being cool.

Thus, the die is cast. One ship. The ship is named, now what to we call the next ship? Logically, the second ship conceived, would have been the police ships. Which were called? Now not only is the die cast, but the ball is rolling. Both are fast an basically small snakes. Therefore, what would you call, the bigger heavy ships?

"Worked" is a relative term, but yes, I suppose it did. At least they're distinctive names. I guess we should all just be happy they weren't also named after snakes. It's the only reason the Beluga is merely a source of harmless innuendo, not an actual sex crime.
lol. That was good.

I really don't see a problem with the Snake naming scheme. No, there are no snakes in space. But neither are there birds, cats, wolves, insects or anything else that has typically been pressed into godfatherhood for vehicles.
Though I do agree it would be cooler if each manufacturer had their own scheme. But I really don't see why one would raise a fuss about it.
FTR, I only found out last year that "Fer de Lance" is a snake. I used to think it was an odd one out and the designer meant to call it "Lance de Fer" (Iron Lance) but botched the grammar. Oh well, just a little lesson that one isn't necessarily smarter than everybody else. ^^

EDIT: just saw the previous posters' comments after posting. Fer de Lance is a snake.

As for the spaceship itself, I'm gonna try it out but I don't really know how to outfit it; the hardpoints draw ridiculous amounts of power so I'd need to go to the engineer before I can do anything else... tedious legwork.

Love my FDL, love my Mamba. Mamba is more fun at the moment due to shard cannons. Might put those on the FDL and see if it regains the favourite sticker.

Snake names for ships is a distinguishing feature of Elite since before time was time, so suck it up cupcake. Maybe we should request having some of the odd ones out like the Challenger and Eagle renamed to something at least reptilian.

Two old blokes are taking a break around the water cooler

'Ere, Alfred?'

'Yeah, Gary.'

'Have you see these new designs that are coming our way for approval?'

'What? Those new small ships with single crew?'

'Yeah, Can't stand them. Give me a big ship that's secure.'

Alfred rolls his eyes waiting on a rant to start! It didn't come, much to Alfred's relief.

'Anyway,' continues Gary. 'The higher ups want us to classify them. If they want to have those designs flying in Cal-Cop space, they need our say so.'

'Hmm,' Alfred thinks to himself. 'Ok, Lets see we need a common theme for ships with a crew under a 20 and has a hyper-drive then.'

'Hey, we could name them after elements?'

'What, you mean like the Earth, wind and fire?'

'Nah, that ain't gonna work, too disco!'

There was a pause...

Gary's eyes lit up with a thought! 'How about the old Greek Gods?'

'Nah,' disagreed Alfred. 'Too Classical.'

'How about animal types then?' Suggested Gary.

'Hmm,' pondered Alfred. 'Not bad, what kind of animal?'

'Oh, what did they call those things back on old earth.'

'No idea, can you narrow it down from 'Thing'?'

'Oh, What where they called,' Gary was getting flustered trying to remember his old earth history. 'They were small things, covered in fur.'

Alfred looked at him quizzically, trying to recall himself.

'They go meow?' Gary looked pained as he racked his memory.

Alfred snapped his fingers and then pointed at Gary.

'Snakes!' He exclaimed. 'I'm sure they were Snakes.'

'That was it!' Gary grinned. 'We'll just name them after snakes!'

'Computer?' Alfred queried. 'What is the most famous species of snake?'

There was a pause and a female voice replied. 'The most famous species is the Cobra, a rep...'

'Right, That's the first one sorted.' Alfred grinned at his companion. 'Lunch?'

And the rest was history!
