Have you found planets inside rings before?

Found this system not to far from colonia has a rocky landable body on the inside of the ring I landed on it and it was pitch black no sunlight even though the sun is right in front of you as shown in last picture

There's a thread dedicated to this very subject, they're called shepard moons, I think I was the first to bring these to the attention of forum members a long time ago shortly after Jaques got stranded out in what is now the Colonia region.

I've found a few GGs with the 3rd ring and moons inside that ring.

This the first system I realised you could have moon and planets between rings, just for into, that dot in the center isn't a body, it's the A and B set of rings, in the center of those, to small to see, is a star, and there are three bodies in the huge ring gap!

According to my imgur profile this was posted 3 years ago, it's still the largest ring system I have found. Ring systems around stars are very likely to have shepard moons, ring systems around GG's are less likely. While technicaly I agree that ring systems around stars aren't actually proper ring systems, they are more an inadvertent game feature, they are recorded as rings for the purpose of the game so I am happy to leave it as that. I have since found many more, both GG's and stars with shepard moons, the Elite Observatory is a real game changer in finding these things!

Here's the system details:

I know it's been a While since I was out exploring but, has anyone encountered this before?

Inside that huge ring sits 3 planets!

Amazing screenshot. Seriously. (y)

So, full-sized planets inside the rings of other planets is indeed an actual thing. This is a real exoplanet called J1407b.

Its rings are so big that they can block up to 95% of their sun's light if you're on the other side.

Seems like the links in my post are now broken thu time and it seems like the pictures have been deleted from screenshot thread. But seeing as somebody gave me a like i managed to dig out one of my old posts that has some pics... :)

The largest ring is very faint. Look close.

It's not a capture in ED, is it ?

No, moons in ED between rings rarely have that configuration, it's always a single very large gap with one or more moons, I have never seen a system with multiple ring gaps with moons in each gap, which is a pity because that would make a lot more sense. This is an artists rendering and a very poor one, because even in real life the ring gaps where the moons are wouldn't look like that. The point of shepherd moons is they sweep the gap clear of debris, they are what actually maintain the ring gaps, without them the gap would close until you had a contiguous ring, the moons in these gaps would be continually hit by debris and perturbed from their orbit, so no, not a real picture (or course) and not from ED.

Thanks for the very informative explanation.

Hey, OP, what system was your photo taken in?
Everyone should remember, too, that Soontill fit such a description, in Here The Wheel. A body inside of a Brown Dwarf debris field. If you find one of these close to Synuefe and the Bubble I'd say scan the ever living sh** out of it. LoL

Your lucky day I still have it bookmarked

Yea, it's been a known artifact of the lighting changes in 3.3. If there are two stars as light sources it will only take the light/shading from one (there's some debate as to which one and why, but usually the main star of the system).

People have posted screenshots of sitting on a completely pitch black surface with a giant star blazing in the sky above them.
Its always been like that. 3.3 lighting changes did nothing in that regard, unfortunately.
