Mamba concept art, from FDev's Gameblast 24hr Charity Livestream

Why did they bother to design this area of the ship? It looks like the engine room. Maybe it's a hint for space legs.

I have to tip my hat to people who create concept art from scratch out of their head. I try to build cool-looking ships in Space Engineers, and they always come out lame. I need to borrow ideas from others (I might build a Krait-inspired ship in SE today). I envy creative people like these artists.

I would guess it's an early design of the downstairs part of the Mamba cockpit, it's still there but doesn't look like that, and needs VR to get to. So the question really should be why did they bother to design the downstairs inaccessible deck of the Mamba that is actually IN the game?

We will find out hopefully at the end of the year.

They called it the cockpit engine IIRC, the Mamba's got a very short cockpit with one at the back so if you were doing its internals for space-feet you'd pop one in there.

I thought all the leaks were pure cobblers, still do. That one piccy makes me think it actually is space-feet 🤷‍♂️. Probably.

Yes, not an area of the Mamba we have seen before. It seems to be a room that is below the bridge somewhere. The ceiling is too high for the room to fit right under the multicrew seat. If you look at the current cockpit in VR, there is a door in the cockpit is on the starboard side. Probably another ladder down from it we'd end in the room that was shown by on the stream. Maybe even the ladder we can see on the left hand side of the screenshot from the stream.

Here is a screenshot of the current Mamba Bridge showing a door on the right hand behind the cockpit seat.

I will be truly impressed if they manage to get all the ships up to "Feet" standard like this. Many of them appear to need a lot of work.

I hate to be that guy, but they did concept art for the Panther Clipper, too. Still waiting for that ship, let alone the ability to walk to the engine room.

Won't get fooled again.

I can't hear you over the roar of the hype train :D

But yes, its very easy to draw concept art, its something entirely different getting it into game.

But imagine the Clipper boost sound- thats the hype train turbo boosting into the distance!

While in StarFeet mode, it will be interesting to see how/if interiors are designed with both zero, low and full G in mind. I see lots of grab rails :D

  • Braben on ship design: "It still makes sense for there to be some sort of general orientation to the ship where people walk around inside and you need to have a concept of up. But also we design it in mind the fact that it will spend some of its time in zero-g, so there are some interesting design philosophies that come from that, and you'll see that over the period of development" (Feb 2013)

  • Newsletter 14: Another avenue for exploration is how the pilot or crew navigates within the starship, when in free space. There is no ‘magical’ anti-gravity, but walkways/floors designed to be stood upon are ferromagnetic, and tiny electromagnets built in to the soles of shoes (they are very small indeed, so shoes are still elegant, lightweight affairs –heavy boots are not needed). Additionally the ship has many convenient handholds for easy manoeuvring. The less basic suits include micro thrusters, to aid zero-G movement – and providing a useful edge in zero-G combat!

Also note the sturdy grab rail on the main panel; similar hand holds would be located at regular spacing throughout the interior of the vessel to allow easier traversal.

Edit: I’m sure all the details have shifted. But they always had some plans in that direction ;)

Indeed. You can see it in early concept art too:
