Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

There is absolutely not a single flight sim currently resembling the level of detail in FS 2020. Even X-Plane 11 is already many notches above all the current others, yet pales in comparison. (they also sell detailed airports as DLC).

FS 2020 is completely groundbraking, competition destroying regarding scenery detail. I can't wait to spend my hard earned euros on it.

This is savage. :)
And yes, it will be worth whatever price MS will put on it.

Yeah, XP11 is already well above the rest, particularly with Ortho4XP, but this is something else. I feel bad for Laminar, they've kept the flame burning all that time when MS decided there was no money to make out of it and dumped the fans in the process, and now I can't see them compete much longer. Commercial mods get close, but there's no way they'll get close to that quality for default scenery.

I'm curious about what's going to be the business model of FS 2020... Selling scenery packs, cities or airports as DLC is apparently off the table. So they'll have to make tons of aircraft to sell as DLC (FSX had 5000$ worth of DLC).

I think FS 2020's business value goes way beyond the 'game' and it's asking price/DLC price, i.e. MS can easily afford not to profit on sales to private customers:
  • It could be a system seller for the new XBox which is otherwise losing the console war against Sony
  • The streamed scenery, real time weather plus the multiplayer can be rightfully considered as service on top of the base game, and bundled together to Xbox/MS store subscription service (like Playstation Plus or XBox Live) to promote their ecosystem
  • I am pretty sure this piece of development will be used for all sort of aviation/military simulators as well, that should be a lucrative market
  • Also pretty sure this tech will be leveraged for additional developments, such as navigation systems, or heck, an improved Bing map that finally beats Google

My hunch is MFS will have an ingame store, similar to a Steam Workshop setup, open to 3rd party devs as well. MS will simply take a small cut of every DLC sale for MFS just like Valve does on Steam. It would also simplify integration of installing all DLC as the storefront handles it effortlessly.

That's my feeling on how they plan to monetize it. And for the record I am perfectly fine if they do this too.

I'd be fine with that. There are so many awesome content creators for FSX that if they were allowed to some sort of in-game store, that would be awesome for all parties.

On the other hand, I know myself and my buying habits. If I pair my credit card with an in-game store, I tend to spend A LOT of money over time.
That's one of the reasons why I kind of liked the old Frontier Store more, because having to physically go to the page and make a purchase was harder and my laziness was keeping my spending in check.
Basically - I'm exactly the kind of person in-game stores are made for.

Is the consensus that the game will ship as a stand alone purchase, but that the streaming scenery and real time weather data will require a subscription? That makes sense and seems like an acceptable compromise as a workable business model if so.

Hold on a sec, real time weather is one of the most important aspects for a global civil flightsim next fo flightmodel, are you sure this feature will be subscription only? Uh.... not a fan if thats the case.

No, I know nothing. I'm just guessing that's the direction they'll go. I'm unfamiliar with modern flight Sims, I was under the impression real time real world weather was something new, are you saying this is a feature of other flight sims?

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Another Thursday update, another batch of purdy screenshots.

I'm well into the impatience phase of the hype cycle though. Getting tired of teases and nothing more. :)

You mean, like Frontier? :)

No, with MFS we are getting regular updates and previews so we know what to expect and what our money will be getting us.

With Elite we literally have zero idea what the end of the year will bring or what our money will be getting us. It's a secret.

It's a huge reason why I'm looking forward to MFS more than Elite's New Era. It's hard to look forward to something when you don't know anything about it.

Yeah, pretty much the only game in recent years whose hype train I'm willing to hop on. It helps a lot that beautiful trailers aside, they are showing dev/feature videos too. The whole thing has 'no expense is spared' feeling about it.

Elite - I have zero expectations on it, I will only consider buying it after reviews are out. Although a single piece of news like 'David Braben and Michael Brookes are fully involved in the development' would change that completely.

Fantastic!
Is it an official photo or did somebody craftfully managed to crop out all their watermarks?

In any case, I will have to check the ocean, now! this is amazing.
I've been flying around Bahamas and Hawaii for a bit recently, but cowardly I set up a nice weather so the water was calm and kind of uninteresting.

I wonder if there'll be whales. :)

The watermarks are still there...in light purple against the blue of the sea, makes them hard to spot.
