VR question.

Not a VR expert but I don't think it's fast enough. My GTX 970 can handle VR but not good... AFAIK the GTX 1050 is even slower.

It’s pretty much on the “minimum spec” end of the spectrum, but depending on what headset you get it should work.

I started off with a Rift CV1 on a GTX 1060 6Gb which was pretty good for Elite, and I didn’t have to compromise my flatscreen graphics settings too much.

Just be aware that your CPU and RAM are also quite important for smooth VR performance.

I have the Rift CV1 and 16 G ram
But cpu need to check that one.

I would not recommend playing Elite in VR with a 1050. Do upgrade to a 1070ti at least for that.
Elite especially likes VRAM, so you need at least 6Gb in your GPU.

While 1060 6Gb is decent, I do remember FPS dipped around planetary settlements and especially with fog around in a simple 1080p screen. And that card is already more than double the performance of a 1050.

With the wonderful ASW on Oculus, my machine was only having to pump out 45fps in the busy areas and I still had most of my settings in the “High” choices. I did get game stutters on occasion - not the really bad loss-of-tracking spinning hourglass style ones, but stations and planets would get a bit jerky every so often.

Dropping everything to the lowest settings gave consistently smooth 90fps, but I do like my visuals so I eventually ended up pretty much rebuilding my PC 😅

As for using a GTX 1050, it all depends on how far the user is willing to drop the graphic settings - taking SuperSampling below 1.0 would gain performance, for example.

I have a GTX1080 with rift CV1 and I play with Medium-High settings.
With a 1050 yeah why not, but only to start and see if you like it or not. If you want to keep using for long time an upgrade is required. Stutters could make you sick and you'll get soon bored of the low quality settings.
I suggest a GTX1080 or a RTX2070.

I initially got VR on my Vive running on a GTX 970 but had to run pretty low settings and frame rate wasn’t always satisfactory especially in asteroid fields and near stations.

Upgrading to a GTX1080 helped a bunch.

I was also kind of surprised that when I upgraded to a newer system with better PCIe throughput (went from Gen4 intel 4770x to Ryzen 3800x) I saw another jump in performance as the older 4770 was not able to drive all the performance available in a GTX1080.

I had a 1050Ti when I was looking to get into VR and everyone I spoke to, the VR sub forum is great here BTW, said you could but really wouldn’t enjoy it. When I also took advice from a tech friend they laughed saying something along the lines of “but you want to enjoy VR don’t you?”

If it’s an option I can recommend the 1070. It’s what I went with initially and did a solid job but better options will be out there now for a similar budget.

You may be better trying VR out elsewhere, see if you like it and then look at whether an upgrade is value in your opinion. I wonder if I’d have been impressed enough to continue had I bought a headset for my 1050.

I have gaming laptop with 2 graphics chips the Main one I use Nvidia 940, and it doesn`t work with VR oculus quest was so looking forward to playing Elite Dangerous in VR.:(

Greeting cmdrs...
Can a nvidia gtx 1050 handle VR ?
Some games.... Just about at lower detail levels (talking rift here not index). But not really games like ED.
If you can't update your rig you may be better off with a quest. Poor performing vr may put you off vr for life, better to over compensate for vr than cut to the bone.
Note slight double standards are I did start playing ed in vr with a gtx670 .... But this was on a dk2 and was before horizons....

Yeah, I also experienced 45 fps in situations when the setting were too high even for the 1080ti, and to be honest in VR that was uncomfortable - even though otherwise I also prefer better graphics to fps.

For VR in general, a 1050 will get you started and will absolutely run a lot of titles just fine, but will struggle with anything that's close to AAA fidelity. ED is actually one of the more taxing VR games you can run, since (in addition to being a very pretty game) you more or less NEED to use supersampling to be able to comfortably read the numerous text labels in-game. If you are buying a VR kit mainly to play ED, I'd say a 1050 will not suffice.

I'm playing on the 6GB version of the 1060 and my settings are fairly low. I think you'll find it a bit of a stretch.

But also check your CPU; that can be just as much a bottleneck.

It will work but it won't be the best experience and you'll more than likely need low settings across the board.

Best to upgrade!
