What blows my mind is there was almost a SARS vaccine after the last outbreak but once it does down it was shelved.
Don't get me wrong am not saying the exact vaccine would help but it would be a head start.

A SARS vaccine would have been less use than continued research on antivirals since they are different viruses.

Once SARS was under control there was no money in it though so research was discontinued.

The concept of pasta is just fine its a bit of a bland processed food that keeps for ages and is very light. The original k-ration. Just not particularly exciting to eat.

Great in spicy Asian dishes.

You definitely never tried a good pasta then. Trust me and Jason on this one, me as an Italian knowing a lot about pasta, and Jason as...uh...he knows about pasta too, just leave it at that.

In other news: will I still have a job to go back to in two weeks? Who knows? So exciting times ahead.

Italy on full lockdown . Any store other than foodprovider or pharmacy closed...nationwide . All the Schools, kindergardens, Univesities, cinemas, theaters etc. have been closed earlier this week . Over 12k Cases, with about 860 dead as of this morning . Ofc., the officials having ordered these drastic measures are all clueless idiots who know nothing, its just a flu [/s].

Stay safe everyone .

p.s.: I need to add the following : Germany, where I live, has pretty high case numbers ( over 1700 ) with a very, very minimal deathtoll so far...afaik 3 in country and one national during a travel in Egypt . There are reasons for this . One important point I want to make you all aware of : Germany has had near perfect virus/spread surveillance weeks before the first person died to CoViD - 19 in country . People have been sent into home quarantine weeks ago . Companies have sent their entire workforce home for 2 weeks due to ONE suspected case amongst them...weeks ago .An entire region housing I think 50k people has been put on lockdown at he first sign of domestic, communal spread, weeks ago. The healthcare system has undertaken a lot of important steps very early to keep tabs on the spread as well as being prepared for whats coming ( still some areas/doctors practices have been overwhelmed...) . In general, from the first person having been tested positive in country onwards, Germany has put into effect lot of measures and actions to keep the spread surveilled very closely, as well as hindering it growing . Still, at the Situation we are now in, our Secretary of Health as well as our chancecllor are not shy to emphasize that it is going to become much worse, that we can NOT take this lightly, that we all need to cut down on social life, doing social isiolation as much as we can to keep it from spreading .

They say this, and the next thing they say is : if we fail to do this, our healthcaresystem might just as well get totally overwhelmed by a rapid increase of cases...since, it is very close to its capabilities already . So, in effect, by now we are not having any public event with over 1k people attending happening anymore . The national premier soccer league - Bundesliga - will play in front of empty houses . Champions league Games will be happening in front of empty houses . We are closing big Theaters, cinemas etc . The "people in attendance" number will be dropped down to 500 or less by the end of the week I expect . As of this morning, it is being discussed to send at least the earylschools ( grades 1-4 ) into early easter holidays in an effort to slow the spread . Quite a few kindergardens and schools have been closed, this also started about 2 weeks ago, due to suspected or infected cases . People having been to, coming from risk areas have been put into home quarantine...this has been going for some time already . Etc.etc.

So, despite all this, despite very good surveillance, quarantining of infected, preemptive measures etc...our # of confirmed infected is growing pretty fast, sometimes by more than a 100 overnight . Ofc., we only know this because we are thoroughly testing people where indicated . The BIG difference is...our death toll so far is comparably minuscle . Because of all that has been done . But still, our officials leave ZERO doubt that it is going to become much worse, and if WE fail to do everything we can to just slow the spread, we might STILL just get overrun...which would mean an immediate, horrible rise in people dieing . Which sadly is exactly what Italy experiences at the moment . In Italy, the doctors and professors are having to take triagelike life and death deicsions manifold every day by now . This explains how there can be 100+ people dieing to the Virus kindof overnight...the System is at a point where it HAS to let people die in order to be able to treat those people who have a better Chance to survive if tretaed .

I look at countries around the world where infection spreads rapidly, and Deathtoll is already higher than where I live, with even less confirmed cases reported...and I look at what is ( not ) being done in some of these countries, and how general public assesses the Situation...and I am really worried.

I wrote this p.s. in the hopes of making some of you guys understand my worries .

I was amazed the Champions league match at liverpool last night was business as usual and not behind closed doors. Someone somewhere was more worried about giving people refunds i guess..

Over here, this Problem has been solved even before the measures have been put into place . A) There already exists a civic law which entitles you to a refund for your ticket to any kind of event if it just does not happen . B) Mid last week, the Government openly started talking about the money which will be thrown around to soften the blow on ecenomy ( they must have talked and planned for days if not weeks already before going public) , by now a lot of things have been decided and instituted, amongst them the decision for the government to chip in to cover losses for the people organizing and conducting the events that still do happen ( like soccergames in front of empty houses ).

All the best . Stay safe .

Thanks for everyone’s input on this thread.
I’ve currently got the dilemma that it’s my grans birthday this weekend but she’s in the top high risk category- I’m living in the se uk coast at a coronavirus hotspot and haven’t been feeling my best;
If I don’t go to see her, she has carers and could well get an infection before I do see her again, but if I go to see her and give her the infection then, yeah, that’ll be pretty crap..
My mask arrived yesterday so I may go wearing it although it may freak her out somewhat...
As previously mentioned, appreciate your loved ones whilst you can.
I feel the uk isn’t coping very well, we don’t appear to testing many people - it’s bizniz as normal in terms of social groups. Our gov will be prioritizing economy over pleps health for sure.

Part of my work is running MakerClub workshops for after school kids - I’ve been self isolating with my mild cold just in case but I’m under pressure to just carry on.
Apart from all the death and fear(!), the human reaction to Covid-19 is highly interesting. There’s definitely a chunk of denial going on - probably too many disaster movies which people don’t want to believe is happening.

Take care all!

Yeah, it's the same in my family now.

Two sisters being in very high-risk exposure due to working in very busy public places, hence their normal/regular visits have been canceled due to my mother (age, multiple unfavorable pre-conditions) and the general risk assessment.

While I've acquired Military-Grade NBC protection again (hell, didn't think I'd ever wear this gear again after >20yrs of service), my mother needs regular Hospital visits and regularly stays there for a few days.
That's a critical vector I have no control over and makes a huge hole in any protection plans I could make.
On top, she's (due to age I guess) amongst those not really understanding what's going on, making it exceedingly difficult for me to at least minimize her exposure.

Will have to see how this plays out. But however it plays out, I did my very best. That's all a man can do.

PS.
Talking to hospital staff here (Germany), it's almost frightening to witness their false sense of optimism and security.
Not encountering a whole lot of awareness, not even the busy receptionist (in-processing in a small room, maximum risk/exposure hotspot) was wearing gloves nor any face mask as of yesterday.
I guess that'll all change within the next weeks here when the hits start coming.

Why is Germany's mortality rate so much lower than Italy's? Most of your post goes to showing their exemplary prevention measures which are commendable, but doesn't speak to why the mortality rate is so different. Curious as to what people think the reason is for that discrepancy. My common sense theory is that there's a big difference between who (demographically speaking) has caught the virus in Germany vs Italy.

A talking head on the news mentioned the other day that Italy apparently has a higher proportion of elderly and therefore more at risk people affected. Maybe that accounts for it?
