For the Russians, that was literally the case. In all circumstances.
I use the example of storming the beaches of Normandy and this is your take is no surprise to me, Patrick.

I appeal to the better nature in humanity and point to our shared legacy of heroism in times of great peril and along some people come to spread a thin veneer of excrement on the sentiment. Very typical.

Thousands served as medics but refused to carry a gun (one Medal of Honor recipient there, IIRC). Thousands more served on the home front likely working in logistics, manufacturing, and the like. If you refused to register, you were jailed.
We didn't shoot people.

I want to believe in heroism of a few elite soldiers on the beaches. But not the majority of the soldiers.
We need to make beavis and butthead the spokesperson for aid relief during any corona virus or other relief aid! Especially if it's not dumbed down to modern standards.
I remember roleos. They were delicious.
One of General George Patton's favorite stories about heroism was a soldier telling Patton off for bugging him. What was the guy doing? Repairing a telegraph wire under fire.

You're thinking of coersion.
Some of us are simply keenly aware that this "shared legacy of heroism" is buried beneath the mountain of evil that precipitated its necessity.
If you want to get down to it both sides were pretty bad. But it was a crazy time.
The average soldier in the trench, the average resistance member in the smokey basement bar? Fighting for home and the person next to them. That's where you gotta look.
Given all the North American's and British who died storming the beaches of Normandy, a country that had recently submitted without a struggle to the Reich, I'm slightly disappointed that a Frenchman such as Patrick couldn't muster even a modicum of appreciation and respect. I guess it must soothe the French national consciousness to make believe these men were all conscripts running away from the gunfire of their whip cracking over-lords instead of what they actually doing in reality: giving everything they ever had or ever would have again for a cause greater than themselves to a people that most of them had never met and who would grow to disrespect them and sneer at their contributions in the decades to follow.
