Sunday morning, a new earthquake hit Zageb. The 5.3-magnitude hit the Croatian capital Zagreb, causing extensive property damage and panic.

The epicenter of this earthquake was 7 km north of Zagreb, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (CSEM).

Many residents of the Croatian capital took to the streets.

Croatian government calls on people to keep their distance from each other in the street following the earthquakes that hit.

The earthquake was followed by a second earthquake of magnitude 5, at 7 o'clock local time.

"Like this Corona is not enough, strong earthquake in Zagreb this morning. Seems all people are ok, some buildings are damaged, top of Zagreb cathedral went down!" (said an internet user).

Covid 19 + earthquake ?

The punishment affects the Croats but what will happen to us all now ?

We had our first death reported Covid related, 67 yo male with pre-existing conditions (cancer in terminal phase).
He was discharged from hospital in France at the beginning of March - basically he was sent to die at home. Somehow he managed to get Covid infected, he returned from France 2 weeks ago, he was admitted to hospital and later confirmed Covid.

Mentioning this because i find it rather debatable to report this as a Covid-19 related death.

Unrestricted travel has proven its dangers, so tightened regulation and medical screening might be a thing in the future the cost of which would obviously be passed on to the customer. The budget airlines are the ones running closest to the red so they are most likely to fold during the pandemic.

Their replacements might go for individual profitability above mass transit in cattle class.

A fair few popular tourist destinations regret ever having catered to the less well off as they've squandered paradise on yobs, which makes the bigger spenders stay away in a vicious circle. Hotels going bust could also be used as an excuse to gentrify destinations as well as travel itself.

I had a discussion on survival after an apocalypse thing with one of the local incomers today outside the local island shop... Cheery topic but obviously on his mind. I found out the sum total of his reasoning and knowledge was either gained from Hollywood or watching Ray Mears making an idiot of himself on TV. Most folks nowadays, cosseted by a dependence on someone else knowing how to do 'stuff'... especially city or town dwellers have absolutely no idea that if it came down to merely a simple thing like electricity and consequently water and sewage supplies ceasing nationally or world wide...most of them would die within a few weeks, more than a few through simple ailments like dysentry and the resulting dehydration.

As a species, most modern humans have forgotten how to survive or even how to live should someone not ensure their electric can openers have power or even how to find food outside of a supermarket. I'm very fortunate...like many ex forces and combat veterans that I'm not only trained but rather competent at doing the surviving bit, mixed in with being a born and raised country dweller I know what I can eat from the land, where to find it, how to prepare it, catch it, fish it or trap it without ready made equipment or firearms...somewhat slightly more importantly, I know what not to eat as well as what plants and foodstuffs are naturally medicinal as well as anti bacterial.

My ready bag is still packed after 20 years, as are my son's... who like me never really unpacked them...just in case.

Survival is easier than you think- all you need is something kinky, a gun and a tough car...

Gotta say, it's odd to see different cultures respond to this. I'm following a number of different communities and some responses are mostly unique to specific regions. There is this rapid switch from "it's a hoax to get our president | it is just a flu!" to "finally those city-dwellers who can't cook a meal will get their come-uppance as I pile the bodies of looters in my yard while wiping my arx with corn cobs as the virus eradicated the left's obsessions and family values are back!" or "finally those hill-billies will see the consequences of their lies and ignorance and will learn the importance of m4a and how essential a proper urban medical infrastructure is!".

These are a narrative and perspective I don't see in many other countries, and seems not so much driven by Corona itself but rather by underlying and pre-existing sentiments such as anger and resentment between various demographics. The idea of this virus as a "great cleanser" that will show for once and for all who was right about this or that. I hope people can put these notions aside, the worst has yet to come.

I also wonder if health history (like pet passports in the EU) will become important and worked in, just as your travel history and social media are.

It's quite easy to implement and it would have helped alot in limiting the spread of Covid.
But in Europe there is that prevailing thinking "i'm an EU citizen and i have rights" so preventing someone that was coughing and having a running nose to board a plane was out of the question 1 month ago.

2) As far as collaboration vs. competition? I guess that depends on how long you want development of an active treatment to be found. Do you prefer organizing a group that will deliberate until we are fighting the next flu strain or do you want those involved to be motivated to compete to be first to market an effective treatment and perhaps see several options emerge that may have several effective options that prove to be more effective depending on varying conditions.

When Immitrex was introduced as the first effective treatment for migraine, it had side effects and was of varying effectiveness for different users. Now there are a good selection of Triptins for treating migraine that enable sufferers to find one that works well for them. And no - I won't provide a link - I know this from personal experience.

With the greatest of respect, I do not envy those who cannot understand scientists being motivated more by the intrinsic desire to fight a global pandemic rather than "free market competition!". Just like medical staff are not running their 20-hour shifts because they are 'competing with other hospitals', neither do scientists scrambling for new treatment options.

Before 9/11 airline pilots were instricted to follow 'orders' from hijackers if they merely said they were armed. Sure,it was annoying, but they typically would demand to go to Cuba or something. Castro would then have the hijackers beaten in some dungeon because he wasn't asking for these headaches and we get the plane back.

This policy has been changed somewhat. I can see similar changes with covid.

I know it is too early to draw any meaningfull conclusions...but with the head of RKI recently saying in a press conference we are still ramping up test capacity...there seems to be a sliver of hope on the Horizon for Germany . The heads of Federation States are coming together with the Federal Government today to assess the Situation and effectiveness of introduced measures, as well as discussing further proceedings ( likely, more if not all States will adopt the measures Bavaria has put in place alreay ).

At least in my town, people heard Mr.Söders ( Bavarian head of State ) message last Friday . Streets empty . The few people who are out and about are alone, or with max 1 other person . Now if we can get some better news on PPE in the near future...we may be able to curb it before masses of deaths .

If everyone knew how to survive independently of everyone else, and could be easily spooked into trying to survive in small self-sufficient groups, they'd quickly find out that the carrying capacity of this planet, without the various systems civilization has put in place, is about a tenth of the current population. There just isn't enough room or resources for billions of free-range humans. Consequently, people are way better off trying to keep their civilizations functioning than fussing over how to outlive them.

Competition often works best in a broadly collaborative environment, else you have disparate groups wasting time and resources needlessly repeating, if not sabotaging, each other's work.

It's a critical outlet for dissenting ideas that may prove valid, but pure competition is self-defeating.

I consider freedom of movement an intrinsic right of mine as a self-willed being, but exposing other's to contageous pathogens I may carry in close-quarters aboard a flying tin-can....not so much.
