Open Gun-ports = open for pvp : Pilots federations rule of the duel

This has been a great read lads, hats off.

Back when I was outside the core pvp experience, it sure seemed like ganking is merely another cheap form of an enjoyment source for basement dwellers. When I joined the criminal side, at first I could hardly bring myself to defeat a bgs underminer in a tiny cobra. Since then we've had tons of pvp engagements for different causes, training duels, attacking another group's bgs, joined in to pranav antal infighting for the lols, openly going against the empire as a whole. I dare say that being ignorant of the ganker side of the argument (which can have so many reasons for existing, I won't list them out again), is simply denying the games OBJECTIVE and EXISTING rules (and also, the law of the jungle that governs Elite Dangerous open): if you don't like what's happening around you, arm yourself. Or leave.

@Murgle IF you'll stick around playing the game, and get to engineering because you land into a friendly squadron that encourages you to try it, and (IF) eventually get to a point where fighting others will become a necessity, you'll get the answer to the "why", it will come from your experience.

What I find incredible is that this stuff needs spelling out- its not like the mindset of self reliance is not widespread. I've been reading a thread where an explorer was prepping their ships for an expedition and how to do it properly. Why is this sort of mindset not common for bubble living, with ships being crafted for a minimum amount of defence in general play?

A ganker is just another obstacle to overcome, like any other obstacle in the game. Rather than try to establish weird Freemasons handshakes to tell people apart, why not develop skills to fight back or escape? And, if all of that is too much work use the modes?

Murgle is saying there's no other reason to do PvP than to upset others.

Did I? I thought I asked whether there were any reasons other than the ones I listed for NON-consensual PvP but I guess I somehow messed that up. Apologies, English in not my native language, I do speak sarcasm though.

This is a myth and doesn't even exist in this game. You click the right button when picking modes, or you don't.

Also, once you start playing in open, you will stumble upon some squadrons turf that was fighting bgs ghosts for months now, and will instinctively remove you from the system forcefully. Blindly running missions, trading, bounty hunting, doing ANYTHING that lands you credits will inevitably mess with someone's efforts. You can say, you oppose these people even without knowing. Flying around harmlessly is impossible, and not consenting to pvp where your efforts can actually be cancelled somewhat, is unreasonable.

I'd like to point out that I don't consent to system security/ATR attacking me when I've been naughty. I don't consent to stations firing at me when I've hacked their data. I don't consent to NPC pirates interdicting me for my cargo. I don't consent to factions sending hit men after me once I'm hostile with them.

Happens anyway.

If you want consent in a video game, play a multiplayer game that's co-op only. This isn't it, unless you want to take advantage of the modes.

No. You asked us to prove people that didn't want PvP were horrible people. They're obviously not.

In any case, there have been examples of reasons for PvP that are quite good. What do you think of them?

Hello old beans,

This is a jolly interesting discussion, what what.
I myself have fallen afoul of many a cad and bounder during my time in the big black.
I take precautions now and mark my words when I say that the open environment should have no limitations, what.
When I take an afternoon stroll to the local hostilier and imbibe a few tankards of the finest gut rot available, I cannot guarantee that I won't come into contact with ruffians of the lower classes who seek to do one harm, what what?
I can't say I am familiar with these griefers you refer to but I know a bally well pirate when i meet one.
Hang em high is say, hang some sense into them!

(Cough) Anyway, I digress.

Open is open and that means all the fun, mystery and bloody pirates you can expect.

Tatty bye

A lot of ED players aren't serious gamers and may not have played an MMO before. They may have played Elite back in the day and thought ED was a co-operative version of this. I know I did.

So to people like us (or like I thought when I first played)

PVP = consenting players fighting, consent meaning 'Pew, Pew?' , 'Yes, OK' type event. A bit like a pre-arranged fight or boxing match. There may even be events I can turn up and bet in game credits on or massive player wars, anarchies must be hell-holes, looking forward to this etc etc

I have met PVP players, I have even fought one who turned up in a shieldless DBS, they will usually leave you alone if you speak to them (I had 10 minutes left in a session once and they let me through no problem, when I do do PVP they will be my first contacts)

I have met players who do not ask for consent but assume they own the mode and they get to dictate my game style (no ADC, no KWS etc etc) - I just submit and wake out, only blocking if they get too boring by chain interdicting. You consented to be blocked when you clicked on Open so don't complain at me or dont chain interdict 1LS from the station.

Gradually my game is filtering PVP from other players who aren't PVP but something else. Must cause problems for some wings and for some BGS prevention when Im running missions against you but hey ho, that's your choice not mine.

In my head I find it hard to separate gankers from the idiot drunk who sucker punches the smallest weakest guy because 'reasons' (he was looking at me funny, he made a move on my girlfriend) I cant see the difference. Not up to anyone to convince me but by all means have a go, I have an Open mind but I cant see the difference in mindset, maybe I never will. I know idiots and worse exist in RL, I just assume that's them playing the game in the same way.

And if Open is only for engineered well built ships perhaps it should say that so all non-Horizons owning players (nearly 50% of the purchasers) and all noobs can play in Solo until they are deemed to have a worthy enough ship to be allowed to play in Open. Sod the social, they have Skype for that after all. They can stay in Solo until certain people think they are sufficiently skilled and equipped to play in Open, lets just make that the rule as its what the people on this thread are calling for and saying is the solution.

First off, the only person pressing the block button is you. If you're going to rely on such weak sauce strategies at least own up to it. "Your choice not mine" my shiny, metal arx.

Beyond that you don't know how easy it is to not just survive, but thrive in Open? Your last paragraph there couldn't be further from the mark, kid.

Assumptions make certain people think the world is flat. I also assumed everyone that attacks unconsenting players are aholes.

I was dead wrong.
