Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I fear that might actually work. Soon after my kids would become a nightmare and my wife would, quite rightly, never forgive me. Ho hum. More time with the family and Iess time to play it is then.
Go out in the garden if you have one. Throw some ball or frisbee, enjoy the sun.

If you don't have a garden, play some cards or boardgames. Watch a movie together. Have some play time together. This can be digital or physical.

Cook your meals together (including kids) to get some family time.

Once you've done some things together, have some private time too. What's the issue your wife have with gaming? It can teach you many things (problem solving, hand-eye coordination, improving spatial thinking, get better at a non-native language, to name a few)

An ode to the mid-range explorer

So I've flown out into the black
And I don't know when I'll be back
So far all I've uncovered
Are bodies and planets already discovered
Even L's and Y's and T's
Are all found so they don't please
Off I go, even further into the unknown
Praying my FSD doesn't get blown
And leave me stranded, fueless, dead
With all my carto data, wasted, fled

Into the beyond. Self isolation
With Celeste, my only companion
"Fuel scooping. Fuel scooping complete
Friendship drive charging". And repeat
Open the map, choose a new system to roam
Oh my days, I'm so far from home
Honk, just a star hanging in space
Of no value at all to the human race
Disappointing yet inevitable, sods law
I don't think I can take this anymore

On my way home again then with databanks full
Oh yes, credits! I'm hearing that call!
Drop from frame shift, back near Shin
Oh no! Crap! This is not happenin'!
Interdiction ring! "I'm gonna boil you up!"
Surrender! Hoping they'll be no dustup
Relief! I'm a "useless dreg" with no gold
Laying around in my empty hold
So back at base I make my "deliveries"
And lo! Yes! There's some first discoveries!

Contentment.

The end.
_

The things this self isolation malarkey drives us to. I thnk space madness will get me before COVID-19.

In that case you need a further PC/XB1/PS4 and a copy of Fortnite for each parent.

I joined the beta, just to see for myself if a carrier would benefit me in any way whatsoever.

I turned out to be out in the Witchhead area, with not enough cash, because that's where I was a month ago.

I sold a bunch of ships and raised the cash, and managed to acquire a carrier to fuss with. I named it "Codger's Useless Ship."

It took me a half hour to figure out how to rename it. It was kinda hidden in there.

Anyway, I goofed around with the various features, laughing quietly to myself when I saw it would take another half-billion to install a shipyard, so I could actually, you know, carry my fleet. And after that it would cost me 40 million per week to have the shipyard there. Haha!

Same deal with the other services, like refueling. You gotta pay a bunch to have them installed, then pay a bunch to keep them active.

I chuckled at the goofy looking crew they saddled me with.

I poked around at the settings.

If you decommission the carrier, you get some of your money back, but it goes down over time. You get 80% if you decommission it right away. If you keep it for 3 months it goes down to 30% refunded. Haha!

I docked on it in my DBX, so here's a screenshot of that. It'll be the last time I own a carrier, so this screenshot will commemorate the event, I guess.

I tried to jump the carrier to another system, just to test it out. This started a 1 hour countdown. I decided I didn't care enough to hang around for an hour.

Yeah. These things have no use for me, whatsoever. I hope someone gets some use out of them.

Youch. That sounds like carnage :(

If those mechanics remain when it goes live, there'll be more salt on the forums than there is in the Pacific.

And I, for one, certainly won't be bothering to ever get one.

Someone else pointed out it was 147 mill a week for maintenance if you fit it out completely.

They're certainly not aimed at me, and I'm quite happy to just let this pass me by and bimble around with my little fleet, but I do wonder if they've thought about how this looks... They look far more directed at player groups / open play than solo players, and that whole "all modes are equal" statement seems rather rickety right now. I shall watch the rest of the beta with interest, and hope I am wrong!

O.k. so 1/2 bill to load your fleet. Thats useful.Move your fleet switch off or decommision the shipyard .That's what it's for after all.
I think the cooldown time is to give you enough time to get to your destination to watch thearrival in-system of your latest acquisition, but the response from the forum has been quite ferocious, even before the beta opened, which i really don't get.
I mean, it's obvious that it's 'big boi' stuff for the players who've been in it from the start and had the wit and providence to ascend the steep learning curve to the undulating plateau of proficiency from which to garner the enormous sums required*
With FC's there is just another steep learning curve, and profits,if any likely to be negligible, but not everything is about profit.
It was never going to please everyone.
I find myself stwangely dwan to this intwigueing puzzle box.
* ToF has been waxing the lyrical.:)

My next venture is to check out the Thargoid Machine Thingy

I've done a lot of things in-game, but never really mixed it up with Thargoids (except for 2 random hyperdictions and a few scout kills in my Orca). So the plan is to unlock some corrosion resistant cargo racks, find some Thargoid tech items and blunder into an alien planetary base. After that I might go pick a fight with an Interceptor just to say I tried.

Any pointers welcome (but no major spoilers pls)

Thanks a lot Codger, that is enough confirmation for me to see that my planck time reaction to dislike the concept was on the right side of the equation.

Crazy as can be, a huge opportunity totally missed. We won't know for certain, but my gut tells me that sale of this update will be in figures so ridiculously low.... who knows what happens next.

Hahaha this really nails it!(y)(y)(y)(y)

As someone else said this thing is more of a flying spread sheet than fun content added to game.

Perhaps suitable for 1st semester greenhorns at London School Of Economics. As a content update for a game with a price tag attached? Nope! Certainly makes me question the remaining lifespan of ED too.

The question I have is, will the Dev's listen and take note then make appropriate adjustments?

I know from previous games the Dev(s) will just plough on, thinking their idea is best and the player community really don't know what's good for them. Games then fail and die.

I hope FD are different; I've heard they were although that was all before my time. Fingers crossed for the current team.

I think if they took 20% of the capital expenditure and 90% of the maintenance, made the spool up very short and the cool down a bit shorter, plus made the fuel much more abundant it would all die down.

Seems like a longer list now I write it down.

I suspect the mining mechanics are the difficult thing to play with. Given the it's all interconnected: the beta seems to have accidentally burst the Borann bubble.

EDIT. All that needs to be done really is decrease fuel consumption by a factor of ten. So basically it's all fixable.

The UC thing is forgivable, you've got to get your data back to the bubble to count.

Fleet carriers are not part of a a paid update.

Frankly, I find my youngest two kids (6 and 8) behave in a more mature fashion than the Elite community. Fleet carriers are clearly intended for the ultra-rich grinders. That's fine by me. I don't really see the need for one, personally, so I'll just not buy one. The whining is ridiculous, childish and petty.
