As for returning... You know, I never really thought about it, but now that I did, I realised something: the way it should work is that I should want to return to the bubble.
These have been my three reasons to return, in about this order:
1. There was something new going on that I wanted to try
2. I wanted to switch ships
3. I wanted to sell my data
The thing is, with the content freeze that Frontier announced quite a while ago, there is nothing new going on in the bubble and won't be for a long time, so my main reason is out.
Carriers would take care of switching ships, if they would be viable, and if carrier functionality for fleet carriers weren't optional. Plus expensive, because at the current numbers, having an active shipyard more than doubles upkeep when compared to rearm&repair.
It's clear now that selling data will not be a possibility. Not that I mind: if I were in a rush to sell, I could just switch to a jump-DBX or Anaconda and rush to the nearest port. If fleet carriers were a viable way of carrying your fleet with you, of course.
So, to sum it up: rather than being an enjoyable experience, returning to me is an inconvenience, a grind that I have to do that mostly takes me out of discovery. You know, exploration. Fleet carriers could have promised a way of lessening that, at a terribly large cost even if there were no upkeep, but it looks like they won't really.
Oh, and you know, the experience of having to travel back (the actual experience of returning) is a frequent deterrent for many players when they are contemplating going out far.
