FD answers: no Cartographics for you

But a market is such an anticipated usage pattern that it comes stock with the Fleet Carrier instead of a Shipyard? To enable carrying the fleet? As the name expressly implies?

It's almost as if the lead of game design is a Magic 8-Ball.
A D20 is indeed smarter than an FC... :)

Being able to go to far flung places, scanning and hoovering up systems...

"Hoovering up", lol. You make it sound so trivial. There's more to it than that.

Quite a lot of time can be spent FSS'ing and mapping worlds in one system, even if you're selective about the most lucrative types. Engineered surface scanners help, but if you run into a multiple star system with multiple metal worlds and terraforming candidates, and two or three Type II GGs then you're going to get well acquainted with the place.

Exploring is easy, but is often very time-consuming, even without babysitting a demanding, high-maintenance megaship.

Wonder why they just didn't call them Trading Post Megaships. Sure, it can carry a few ships around but that seems more of an auxiliary purpose, like a parking lot. Not a function to name the whole operation by.

Apparently they said in the Lave Radio interview that they didn't considered Exploration as an typical Carrier usage pattern.

I believe them, but the fact that they DIDN'T consider exploration is what's so incredibly sad about this whole issue. Particularly seeing how the original proposal two years ago had an exploration variant of fleet carriers as a thing.

FDev's lack of vision is terrifyingly troubling.

Interesting, considering that their marketing seemed to indicate that it would be viable. So there's not just a disconnect between the devs and the players, but also between the devs and their marketing department. ;) :D

Being able to go to far flung places, scanning and hoovering up systems then selling, getting creds and tags while moving along further to far flung paces will wreck the dynamics of exploration IMHO

Is it just me that agree with the Devs that a UC on a portable carrier is not a good thing for the game???? 😲
I don't see why that would "wreck" any dynamics.

Currently, you go to far-flung places, scanning and "hoovering up" systems. Choose the fast way (Neutron Highway) or the slow way. Fly to one of the many deep space outposts (while continuing to scan and "hoover up" systems), sell the data, then head off again, hoovering all the way.

Note that anywhere near Sag A* is not a far-flung place. That's a well-serviced local hub. Ditto for Colonia, and the entire string of motorway service stops on the way.

The new dynamic, with a megaship involved, would be:

You take your megaship to far-flung places, refuelling it through mining or whatever. You can't use the Neutron Highway, and the old "slow way" is super-fast compared to current megaship spin-up/cooldown timings. Leave your megaship parked, scan and "hoover up" systems in the general vicinity. Return to your mobile base. Welcome other travellers out in the deep, who might drop in. Move where you want, managing your megaship's needs, exploring around it - or just leave it thousands of LY away - head off, get back to it whenever.

That sounds to me like some welcome variation to "traditional" dynamics of exploration.

Of course, we'd need megaships to not suck in terns of credit cost punishment, the addition of UC to its fitout, and the ability to actually carry a fleet out of the box, like its name supposedly indicates... lol

You're right; I don't have to buy one at all, do I. No one's forcing me to eat either. It's not like I'll die immediately; life will still be experienced, yes? Kinda like selling people the base game, telling them the expansion doesn't matter. Probably not until engineering starts to matter anyway. It's not like they need it in order to fly a spaceship, right?

I took the liberty of re-establishing context in the quote. I'd appreciate it in the future if quotes aren't taken out of context, but if that's not feasible don't worry; I'll happily restore it as needed. But I do sincerely appreciate it every time common courtesy is extended.

Nope, nobody is forcing you to do anything in the game
There is no other context

It will not be the first time when the marketing is selling something that is not even properly planned, not to mention developed :)

I think they had a vision
Somehow it didn't worked

What did you expected them to do?
Just Say: we're not able to make carriers useful for exploration within the game context, so we are canceling the entire carrier project. Sorry folks.

🤷‍♂️

Captain Kremmen has the same vision of megaships for exploration as I do. It would be cool to follow another players ship and for multiple people to work an exploration area off of it. then all get aboard for the next jump.

But as you said, it won't work if we can't keep the megaship running with credits.

FDev is completely able to make carriers useful for exploration, they are CHOOSING not to by keeping UC off of them, hence the uproar.

  • Universal Cartographics will become available as an optional service.
Well, I may have been one of a few objector to this but am surprised Frontier listened to the mass of support to the idea- they are not normally that democratic!

I have to say fair play to them for taking an interest in what the players want and Interested to see how this pans out in the Beta?

Just noticed this post and it did make me chuckle-

You, among select few. Out of curiosity, do you like exploration? Like, going away from the bubble for a few months, past SagA?

Thanks for asking and I have been known to dip my toe in the galactic pool occasionally :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
