Nope, items bought with real money in the store can only be cosmetic and not affect gameplay.
That's one promise that FD has been good about keeping, and for good reason.
Oh, yes, I didn't mean they would DO anything.
I just mean they will be kits you apply to your carrier - they wont fly about or anything, they'll just be the front ends or whatever which attach to your carrier and make it look different.
This is actually a rare occasion where I am glad they are making cosmetics for something.
It will mean they actually want players to use these things, and enjoy using them, and lots of players to do so, so that they can SELL SELL SELL the cosmetics.
This means they may actually listen to people talking about the mad maintenance costs.
Can't believe I just said I was glad about microtransactions....ugh, I feel dirty.
You can already preview this in beta. The carriers at the various docks where they sell them have variants with the former support ship bits and pieces attached.

Carrier ship kits will be available when FC's go live. And you will recognize a lot of the ship kit parts from the support vessels which were scrapped.
It's hardly food out of folk's kids' mouths.
My sources tell me they were scrapped after internal play testing deemed them fun.Just remember kids, FDev ditched support ships to make Fleet Carriers BETTER!

I'd scold my sources if they existed. That implies that FDev are still capable of designing fun gameplay. It think that's unlikely, even by accident.
I have a feeling the FCs were done by two guys, who were only allowed to work on them on Mondays and Thursdays. No, but FDev obviously spent a lot more time on cosmetic DLC for fleet carriers than actual game mechanic design.
Oh wow, this is just getting insulting.
