What if this is the reason they scrapped the "support ships"?

They are going to sell them as Carrier ship kits... aren't they?

They aren't going to waste the modeling, texturing, etc etc etc time put into making those things we saw in some screenshot ages ago.

This... this is arx this is.

Nope, items bought with real money in the store can only be cosmetic and not affect gameplay.

That's one promise that FD has been good about keeping, and for good reason.

I like the idea of different vessel classes eventually. They could use those models for that.
But Cosmetics mean money.... So my inner Cynic is coming out again.

Oh, yes, I didn't mean they would DO anything.

I just mean they will be kits you apply to your carrier - they wont fly about or anything, they'll just be the front ends or whatever which attach to your carrier and make it look different.

Oh OK. But that sounds like a lot of effort when they could just slap on an unpainted spoiler instead :)

This is actually a rare occasion where I am glad they are making cosmetics for something.

It will mean they actually want players to use these things, and enjoy using them, and lots of players to do so, so that they can SELL SELL SELL the cosmetics.

This means they may actually listen to people talking about the mad maintenance costs.
Can't believe I just said I was glad about microtransactions....ugh, I feel dirty.

Well they'll have to do it without me then.
I've spent my fair share in the store but Fdev isn't gonna get a dime from me anymore unless there are some drastic changes made, and I don't mean FCs only.
I'm spending my money on other games now, supporting devs who've earned my contribution by delivering fun and satisfaction when playing their games.

You can already preview this in beta. The carriers at the various docks where they sell them have variants with the former support ship bits and pieces attached.

Yep, see this thread here full of pics:

Carrier ship kits will be available when FC's go live. And you will recognize a lot of the ship kit parts from the support vessels which were scrapped.

They might well reuse some parts of the artwork and models for ship kits, but they presumably won't add the actual support ships as ARX purchases.

Since support ships seem to have been "cosmetic" anyway (visually indicating what purpose the carrier served), I'm not that bothered. We'll still be able to passively see these models on other people's ships, just as we'd be able to passively see them if the Support Ships themselves were in the game.

It's hardly food out of folk's kids' mouths.

No, but FDev obviously spent a lot more time on cosmetic DLC for fleet carriers than actual game mechanic design.
I have a feeling the FCs were done by two guys, who were only allowed to work on them on Mondays and Thursdays.
