News Community Update (01/05)

Unsurprising. Hopefully the content reveals stay on schedule if you had planned any. Could make the delay a bit more bearable. ;-)

God this community... never seen anything else like it in my life. I have so much sympathy for the Devs who have to deal with this sort of crap while they are locked in their houses under quarantine, very likely scared for the health and livelihoods of themselves and their families, dealing with a poor government response and shortages... Can you imagine being under quarantine in one of the countries worst affected by this literal global pandemic unprecedented in anyone's lifetime, still working as best as you can with limited resources and infrastructure from your home, trying as hard as you can to work your job which is just a job like anyone else's, and there are a whole community of people ready to call you a liar, dishonest, lazy, whatever when you honestly admit you need more time to work on making new things for them to enjoy? I have no idea how they persevere but God damn it's admirable.

Dearest Frontier, now that you have some flexibility in your schedule (as in, you no longer have a set release date), would you consider bringing back Community Goals and Galnet? You could do these in such a way as to feel like an Interstellar Initiative, in that you could chain CGs together in a "chapters of a story" fashion, but I wouldn't expect any new assets added to the game like the Galaconda. I and others (who are too poor for fleet carriers) are just looking for "something to do" that's fresh and different, even if it's purely narrative driven by existing game mechanics.

Also, you might want to wake up the Thargoids. An attack on Sol or Lave or ShinDez right about now would go a long way in "distracting" us all from the bad news of this delay. I've yet to visit a burning station since I got VR! You could have an attack on a very important system like this, and then make the restoration of a specific station like Jameson Memorial (do it!) the Community Goal for the week. Surely using these existing in-game mechanics are not that demanding, and it would buy you a lot of good will. If nothing else, it should help squash "the game is dead" feeling that so many players have had in recent months. Not only would this be good for those who cannot afford fleet carriers, but it will give those who can something to do with those carriers.

Heck, I'll VOLUNTEER to create the CGs and Thargoid Invasion if you're short-handed, just send me the tools! :D

Thanks for the update and is completely understandable, is there any possible way to make CG's and Galnet community led? Would be great if we could take the pressure off FD and do it as a community effort and get those features back?
The community could certainly set up its own news feeds and community initiatives - some of it already has. Fleet Carriers will make it easier for the community to set up and track some CG-like activities in certain areas, as well.

But in terms of getting access to the official stuff, unfortunately the evidence of the last times those things were tried suggests that it actually puts more pressure on Frontier vetting, approving, translating and setting into the official Galnet and CG formats community contributions than it would take for them just to do it themselves.

Thanks for the news. It's disappointing because we are all impatient and desperate for it, but completely understandable and frankly inevitable.

Keep doing your best and keeping us updated and we'll keep on keeping on!

All the best to you at Frontier. Keep drinking water, it helps to dilute all the salt from the saddos that get angry when they can't wait for something.

All the best,

CMDR Racketear

Greetings Commanders,

Today, we wanted to share an update with you all regarding the on-going development of Elite Dangerous.

Despite transitioning as a company to work from home during these challenging times, we're still committed to providing the best possible support, development and updates for the game and for our community. We've launched the first Fleet Carriers beta and are now busy working on the second installment coming in May. This second beta will be opening its hangars not only to PC Commanders, but also those on console for the first time! Everything is still on track to bring Fleet Carriers to the live servers in June.

However, during this uncertain period, we've also had to re-examine our longer term roadmap and make some adjustments. To ensure that we can bring you an incredible new Elite Dangerous experience without compromising the team who work at Frontier, the Next Era release date will move slightly from December 2020 to early 2021.

We haven't made this shift lightly, but it has been made with both the team and the game's best interest at heart. We know that many of you are eager to hear more about the Next Era of Elite Dangerous and, despite this shift in release date, our schedule to bring you news and details about the future hasn't changed, so keep an eye on all of our channels for more information in the coming months!

Thank you everyone for your patience, understanding and generally being an awesome and passionate community!

Stay safe and keep supporting each other,

o7

I try to not even be salty, because if I could wait 2 years since beyond update, I could wait another 2-3 months, but considering FDev's mentality over this game, and the example of Fleet Carriers, I am not even suprised they delayed FC's a year. But heck, NMS dev could deliver 2 major updates in under 2 years. If coding is hard, maybe 1 major DLC under 2 years, but TWO years worth of nothing is disconcerting. No ships, no content, no GalNet, no narrative that was promised. I feel this game is slowly dying and the worst part is that I will be there when it is brought down. Please, treat Devs fairly, but this should apply to the players too from devs. Delaying a major update once is understandable, delaying it second time is sadness. Not to mention the new era update is meant to be released in early 2020 to Q4 of 2020, with content flowing from the beginning to the end. And that was delayed a Year too. I am angry, disappointed and salty, but my behaviour is not without reasons. If I did not have any reason to be salty, I wouldn't post to this forum for the first time in my career as a commander.

I suppose the issue here is going to be how carefully a CG or II needs to be considered. This is not a player base that embraces change or disruption to what their doing so they're going to have to consider the impact of any CG or Thargoid invasion. I imagine they won't want to deal with the salt explosion right now if Thargoids accidentally attack a station that a player group is using.

Although its bitterly disappointing, that pain is attenuated by:

A: FDev being sensible with social distancing, meaning there is a company thats not going to be struck by COVID and protecting is employees. Being irresponsible means worst case the whole of FDev is in hospital- i.e. we have nothing.

Also take into account the possibility of a second pandemic wave, FDev having time to change internal offices. I mean look at this:

FDev are going to need a lot of rethinking regards that shiny new building and open offices. Thats going to be a big upheaval.

B: It gives FDev time to really polish that Powerplay update. I mean so polished I can see my face in its brilliance. This was leaked earlier:

Fantastic!

C: It give me extra time to finish my Asp Lego.

D: We will still see what New Era is to the same schedule- just not be able to play it.
